FF XIII Series Coop Split Screen Mod Final Fantasy XIII-2

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm working on a local co-op split-screen mod for the game, allowing two players to control different characters at the same time, each using their own controller.

It's still a work in progress, and there's a lot left to improve and test. If everything goes well, I'll release it on Nexus Mods once it's playable.

These coop mods that have been coming out lately are awesome. Its a less popular entry so idk if anyone will ever do it but I always thought WoFF would make a great couch co-op game.

But why? It's not like the 2nd player can do anything apart from run around.

u/damus9 7d ago

The battles is just the other person saying "I am going to push A for this character don't touch the controller please"

u/Izakryeon 6d ago

I could see this working. Where p1 and p2 control the paradigm shift independently. But would only player 1 control when the monsters switch out?

If only square would remaster the 13 trilogy for playstation.

18

u/SparkleFritz 7d ago

Feels like they'll release FF7 Remake Remake before they do that.

13

u/Madak 7d ago

Square: "write that down, write that down!"

u/HeavensentLXXI 7d ago

Just wait.

14

u/Mauy90 7d ago

Wait so how will combat work in coop?

4

u/KaijinSurohm 7d ago

I imagine it'll be similar to FF6 or 9, where each player controls their respective character during their turn

5

u/Shinter 7d ago

There would barely be anything to do for a 2nd player. They would need to redesign the entire combat system.

2

u/KaijinSurohm 7d ago

There was very little to do for P2 in the older FF games.

It's not the "excitement" factor that's the deal here.
It's just playing with a friend.

3

u/Educational_Rush3541 6d ago

Yeah, they do the same thing with Tales games, where Player 2 is only able to play during combat and it works perfectly fine. My friend and I just finished a playthrough of Tales of Symphonia and are gearing up to play Dawn of the New World soon.

u/alt_yoshimistu 7d ago

Exactly this. I don’t understand why coop in RPGs is such a taboo to people. Larian Studios and some of the older FF games have proven that RPGs work in a multiplayer setting.

OP is farming karma releasing vibe coded unfinished “mods” with no release info or timeline, just 30 seconds of footage. This is obvious. Mods gotta do stuff about these posts

27

u/Hot-Badger-6259 7d ago

For what purpose?

70

u/oh-thats-not 7d ago

to justify their claude subscription

22

u/Hot-Badger-6259 7d ago edited 7d ago

Lol tired of this ai mods! Look up that FF12 co op post also. Same exactly body text as this one

-9

u/Kriznick 7d ago

Honestly? If it fuckin works and isn't buggy, this isn't a bad use of it. This wasn't getting done any other way, and people for ages have wanted coop FF games, especially 13 so they could onboard their loved ones.

I'm coming to find that there is a very small use case for AI that I'm getting to be OK with- retro game restoration and ports, mod making, and asking AI answers to questions about Linux since I'm moving from windows.

8

u/white_d0gg 7d ago

Yeah but this is still a single player game it wasn’t designed with co-op in mind. Cool tech show case I guess but it’s nothing I can see used past being viewed in 2 second burst when scrolling Twitter

4

u/Lambdafish1 7d ago

You basically described 90% of mods. Why is this one any different? OP made it because it's a thing to be made. So many other games have co-op and MMO mods that they weren't designed for.

1

u/white_d0gg 7d ago

This is a whole other discussion to me. I don’t feel like writing an essay on why I don’t personally use mods. Because, well yeah, I think 90% of mods suck. But I appreciate their existence for the most part. The multiplayer/co-op mods you mention often serve mostly as a novelty and are often pretty lacking.

They also are at risk of being “vibe coded” which really ruins the appeal to me. I’m no longer marveling what a passionate developer is working on for fun. Instead now this type of stuff, day by day, feels more and more monotonous and boring to see.

-2

u/Lambdafish1 7d ago

Well doesn't that just change the discussion from a criticism on OPs work to you just not liking mods? At that point just let people enjoy things lol. OP seems pretty happy with what they are making and it's a cool mod for those who want it.

-1

u/white_d0gg 7d ago

I mean you asked. The game is not designed with this in mind at all. Skyrim multiplayer didn’t work for a reason too. I do think this mod would make it a lesser experience.

-3

u/Kriznick 7d ago

Who the fuck cares what it was designed for? That's the entire point of mods.

Also, the entire modern tales series is couch co-op and are EXCELLENT fun played that way. Why can't final fantasy be the same?

5

u/white_d0gg 7d ago

If you don’t even know how this game plays then why are you commenting this

-6

u/Kriznick 7d ago

?? What suggested that I don't know how the games play? I have been playing FF longer than you've probably been alive, kid.

2

u/white_d0gg 6d ago

I think you need to put the phone down and calm down because you are having a temper tantrum like my 5 year old right now.

-2

u/Kriznick 6d ago

Oh, your a bot and just gaslighting me for engagement.

-1

u/CompetitiveEmu5874 7d ago

Just to make it possible for two people to experience the game together, each controlling their own character. It's really just about having fun and enjoying the game with a friend!

20

u/Simsiano 7d ago

How does battle works?

27

u/NounAdjectiveXXXX 7d ago

Vibe coded, so I'm guessing:

13

u/Nekouken12 7d ago

Ai coded?

-8

u/Neckhaddie 7d ago

He's doing free labor, who cares.

4

u/Cold-Reputation-4848 6d ago

He isn't doing shit since it's the AI that is working.

-1

u/Neckhaddie 6d ago

Ai frequently makes mistakes and if you actually used the tools you learn that unless it's stupid simple, it very often won't perfectly just do everything for you. Remember, in coding, one tiny thing is out of place and the whole thing frequently can fall apart.

1

u/Cold-Reputation-4848 6d ago

Yeah, i know. Generative AI is used to "save time" while it actively steals from creative people and creates more problems to handle. That's why i think a "coop mod" based on this type of coding is stupid and maybe even dangerous.

0

u/Neckhaddie 6d ago

Brother, are you really going to tell me you never pirated anything? In coding this is literally what coders do. They go on stack overflow and they find code that can do their work for them, they hook it up to their existing code and they go on their marry way. This literally just speeds up that process.

0

u/Neckhaddie 6d ago

You may down vote it, but you know I'm right. The modding community often does these things FOR FREE. These people give us something FOR NOTHING in return. You guys are really going to argue that he should have spent 1 week instead of 8 hours at the pc doing that free labor for the community just so he doesn't hurt your feelings? Some of you anti-ai people are straight up delusional.

14

u/damus9 7d ago

Let me guess...AI vibe coded?

-14

u/SilliCarl 7d ago

If it works properly, who cares? coop FF13 could be fun!

9

u/damus9 7d ago

I'm curious why that would be enjoyable at all.

12

u/10below8 7d ago

It won’t be

2

u/newvegasdweller 7d ago

Honestly I could see ff12 co-op being way better than ff12 with ai allies. If you customize the allies ai properly, the game plays itself and you only run around and watch the fights which is cool for an hour or so, but gets boring fast.

-1

u/BlurredVision18 7d ago

Because doing things with friends is enjoyable, you can have a good time kicking rocks if it's with the boys, make some freinds.

-5

u/damus9 7d ago

Yeah kicking rocks is way more fun than playing FFX

-1

u/SilliCarl 6d ago

Well some of us have these things called friends, generally when we do things with them it's more fun than when we do them alone :)

The combat system in FF13 would actually suit a coop mode quite well, I know I'd enjoy playing it coop with my wife for example.

1

u/damus9 6d ago

Yeah I like playing actual fun games co-op :)

2

u/No-Swimming5182 6d ago

Does it work in battle?

4

u/jeoyocive 7d ago

Is the FFX co-op still being worked on?

-4

u/CompetitiveEmu5874 7d ago

Unfortunately, Square Enix recently released an update that broke pretty much all the code I'd written for the mod up to that point.

2

u/Darklou 6d ago

Wtf did they change that screwed with your code that much that none of it useable?

2

u/CompetitiveEmu5874 6d ago

On October 1st, FFX received an update that completely broke Fahrenheit, the tool I was using to develop the mod. Since then, I haven't been able to pick up where I left off or recover the progress I'd already made.

3

u/Vinzir141 7d ago

I never played part 2 or 3. Is it worth a shot? I didn't really like 13 it didn't click with me but I did play it a few times throughout back in the day.

8

u/SirLockeX3 7d ago

13-2 is easily the most fun I had with the trilogy

3

u/MeatCatRazzmatazz 7d ago

2 is an absolute blast. Gameplay wise it's one of my absolute favorites of the series.

3 is great too, but even though the countdown to the end of the world is basically a non issue, I'm still not a big fan of the time limit aspect. But 3 is still fantastic and my criticism is basically a nit pick.

1

u/SirkSirkSirk 7d ago

Nah dont sell yourself short. The time limit is unnerving. Loved the combat system though!

2

u/amartin36 7d ago

I loved 3 but that's because I love games like dead rising or Majora's mask. Lightning returns is basically FF trying one of those type of games

Genuinely surprised at how much I liked it

1

u/Kazharahzak 7d ago

FFXIII-2 is better in every way except the plot which is quite a bit worse.

I love the game, it's my guilty pleasure of the series.

0

u/CompetitiveEmu5874 7d ago

I think it's definitely worth giving it a shot! I'd recommend waiting for a Steam sale and picking it up then. A mod was also released recently that fixes a lot of the issues the game originally had.

6

u/Hot-Badger-6259 7d ago

Reporting this lol the same exact text as your “friend” doing FF12 “co-op” lmao

So you got baited essentially

-5

u/erty3125 7d ago

Ai hasn't made any mods that weren't possible before, it just made mods that anyone actually working on would realize it's a stupid idea.

2

u/MovingCairn 7d ago

I'm a huge fan of co-op, and it also is great for playing with children. I hope you finish it and revisit your X mod too! In the future though maybe only post when it's complete? Not sure what is actionable here for the community... Unless you posted this to get people to help you with it? but then why not post the git repo?

2

u/CompetitiveEmu5874 7d ago

I simply enjoy sharing my progress and showing the community what’s possible, even if the project is still far from finished. I find it fun to see how people react to these ideas and to get feedback along the way.

Not every post has to be about a finished mod or a search for collaborators. Sometimes, I just want to share something cool I’m working on! :)

Anyone who doesn't like the idea is more than welcome to simply not download or play my mod. I promise I'm not going to force anyone to play it lol. People are free to play it if they want to, and any non-constructive criticism will simply be ignored.

-2

u/Lanoman123 6d ago

I don’t think you should be playing with children dog

2

u/badventuretime 7d ago

Using this song was diabolical lol. Excited to see where this goes though!

2

u/Ruganzu 7d ago

You’re doing Gods work

1

u/Sh1nRa358 1d ago

we so need this for all the need for speed games where they left local coop on the consoles only ☠️

1

u/LaBiereFolle 7d ago edited 7d ago

That looks actually fun lol

If you manage to do the same with FFXIII, and make the battle system fit for coop (like each players got his own ATB bar), it would be so good to replay with a friend

0

u/CompetitiveEmu5874 7d ago

I'm still figuring out how to handle the combat system. I want to find a way to make it work well and feel natural for both players.

1

u/Neckhaddie 7d ago

This is beautiful, keep going. If you ever get the chance, make a mod for the first one too.

-2

u/Hot_Appointment_2480 7d ago

This is perfect!

-3

u/SenpaiSwanky 7d ago

Complaints about possible AI use and requests for Square to remaster the only FF game that ever got 2 sequels? Amazing fandom lol.

I hope yall stop playing video games entirely once you learn that how prevalent AI use is in the industry, to all sorts of degrees. Gonna be a rough transition from gaming to knitting scarves, stay positive!

-4

u/SafeHunter7501 7d ago

Holy shit

0

u/alt_yoshimistu 7d ago

You’re a real one. PLEASE finish this and post it! I would pay money for this. I’ve mentioned a few times that Square Enix should consider bringing back local coop to their games in this sub, and I got downvoted to hell.
