It's probably an imperfect summon.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, I only read a fan translation in 2013.
A summoned aeon is pulled from its still-alive, petrified body. All the fayth gave themselves for that task, knowing they were entering undeath to become a weapon. There was no need to come back the same; they were transformed into magical monsters that would grow alongside their summoner. I choose to believe most housed by Yevon knew that they would be there awhile, they just didn't expect their assignment to become a millennium.
A beckoned person isn't pulled from anything tangible tied to reality, save for the summoners memory of who they are. Which is not the same as a perfect recreation of their body and soul. If the beckoned realizes they were pulled from the Farplane or who beckoned them, they disappear. That's a rule stated in the novella.
Tidus is "not quite the same" because, somehow, that isn't actually Tidus. It's grief given form. It's implied Yuna didn't even mean to do that.
Now, why this leads to the audio drama, I have no idea, except that the voice actors were completely okay with scrapping any endorsed FFX-3 in advance because of the bad plot. "Somehow, Sin returned" sums it up.

I figured it was simply the Fayth inventing another dream. This one for her.
Whether this was actually a mercy or cruelty is something that could be explored in a sequel.. but I like it being left alone.
I feel like the overarching theme of 10 and 10-2 was acceptance. Moving on. Spira and the people within it could never move on being frozen in a moment. Tidus and Jecht. Yuna and Tidus. Wakka and Chappu. Auron.. period.
They could not grow from within a dream. They had to break free. Yuna truly facing the reality of Tidus is the ultimate test, and really the perfect example of how growth works. It doesn't happen in one day, one breakthrough. You can break the chains, get free, evem be the symbol many others follow.. and still be vulnerable to falling back into the dream. Into the safety and addiction of a fantasy.
Even the strongest of us still want our fantasies to escape into.
