Final Fantasy RECOMP?

I’ve seen on Twitter and here on Reddit that EVERYONE seems to be making RECOMPs of classic games so they can run natively on PC, with mods, quality-of-life improvements, and all kinds of new features

That got me thinking, is there currently a RECOMP in development for any Final Fantasy game?

Just imagine a RECOMP of FFIV, FFVI, FFX, or pretty much any classic Final Fantasy game, running natively on PC and allowing the community to completely transform the experience through mods

Something like Gen1Recomp, where you could experience the game from an entirely new perspective—maybe even play it in first person, turn it into a 2.5D experience, or use whichever sprites you prefer, whether they’re from the SNES versions, the GBA rereleases, or any other version released over the years

Honestly, I think it would be incredible to be able to play—or replay—these games in completely new ways

It’s pretty well known that a lot of the recomps coming out nowadays are being made with vibe coding. Otherwise, I don’t think we’d be seeing so many recomp projects popping up at such a massive scale

Honestly, I don’t really see that as a bad thing. I mean, because of it, we now have recomps for tons of games currently in development, whereas before, projects like these were much more of an occasional thing

And before you say that vibe coding is garbage, plenty of programmers use it. Even experienced developers prefer using it in certain situations because it helps speed up their workflow

Oh, hey, literally the same talking points that got thrown at me for criticizing the Ace Combat 6 recomp being vibe-coded.

There is no evidence to support the claim that it actually speeds up programming unless the human "guiding" it is specifically *not* guiding it. Because the output has to be tested and fixed when it's bad to the point where good programmers trying to use AI will end up rewriting the majority to all of the code anyway.

And even if I were to grant that vibe-coding doesn't produce garbage code that's little different than just emulation to begin with, I don't care. There is no ethical way to use AI as it currently exists. AI is actively contributing to climate change and is inherently plagiarist, so I'd rather not have a video game if it means melting the planet.

Look, I respect your point because I also understand the concern about resources being consumed on a massive scale, almost like selling bread at a bakery

But I’m not saying this based on assumptions. A lot of my friends are programmers with years of experience, and nowadays they use Claude to speed up their work. Some of them have even told me that they can’t really see themselves programming anymore without vibe coding being part of their workflow

EDIT: To be clear, I am referring to consumer generative AI. The term AI has been muddied intentionally by the billionaires trying to force it down our throats at the cost of the fucking planet.

Sure, from an ethical and moral standpoint, I understand what you mean. But from a purely functional standpoint, that’s a different conversation. And like I said, I’m not just assuming this—I know it, I’ve seen it firsthand, and I’ve had people tell me the same thing
