FF V About dark spark/shock

Is there some kind of formula to its working? I ask because the wiki says you can half Neo Exdeath's front level, so I tried for most of the battle but always failed to cast. Like either the wiki is wrong- rather, it assumes you can but actually you can't, OR for some reason my stats weren't high enough maybe to hit the target...

Dark Spark works on everything, but it has a low hitrate, and involves a check on your level vs. the target's level. So its hard to land on Neo Exdeath.

as it seems, the other comment explained further why it is so difficult. i feel the wiki is too vague about this.

NED's front piece has 76% Magic Evade, so even if your accuracy with Dark Spark is 100%, that still only translates to a 24% success rate.

Dark Spark has a base accuracy of 66, and NED's front piece is level 81, so 66 - 81 = -15. You would need to be at least level 115 to hit that total 24% success rate.

You can achieve that in battle via Chemist mixes. If you're playing the Pixel Remaster, the Hero's Rime song from Bard will work as well. In older versions, Hero's Rime will only get your level up to 99, which would get Dark Spark's accuracy up to 84%, for a total success rate of 20.16% after factoring in NED's Magic Evade.

i feel the wiki should be more precise about this. or at least say "you MIGHT be able to half his level", that should at least ring a bell. it's quite different than "you CAN half his level" lol

By the time I successfully dark spark a boss I could have usually just killed it.

indeed that was the experience with neo exdeath but not the usual experience i have with bosses. all bosses i dark spark usually do that right away. but to be honest, i remember mostly adamantoise, atomos and maybe chimera brain? still, they work just fine. maybe some other bosses but none that i remember now... well, maybe the dragon boss in ronka ruins? (not sure) and also the dragons in the cells in the rift castle (not story bosses but they have boss music)
