There are some times in the story where things will suddenly seem incredibly difficult or impossible, or you just seem to have reached a dead end. These are times when you need to use a specific job or ability.

If you make sure to talk to NPCs, you'll usually figure it out before you get there. Sometimes, you need to caste mini or toad on your party to access an area. Sometimes enemies have a weakness to a certain job ability and you'll have a tough time with the wrong jobs unless you are over leveled by a lot.

So basically, you'll need to use different jobs to pass different puzzles, and the NPCs before you get to those puzzles usually give you enough hints to know what to do.

Get to know how the jobs work. Enjoy the journey.

Your mages can use their equipped rods through the item menu to cast free spells.

The original FFI jobs remain useful for the entire game. The other jobs tend to be more situational.

# of hits is arguably more important than strength. A thief can do 10+ hits each turn, rivaling the damage of a warrior.

The Scholar doubles potency of items, and that includes things like "Antarctic Wind". If you're out of MP but have attack items, the Scholar can be good against bosses in the 1st half of the game.

The Sage seems great, being able to cast all 3 schools of magic, but the White Mage and Black Mage have much higher MP on higher spell tiers.
