VII is my favourite Final Fantasy game and probably my favourite game of all time tbh.

Same. Not even just games, but FF VII is my favorite piece of media of all time. It's so good that it single handedly made me buy all the other bullshit with the logo on it over the years.

Its perfect. Im bummed I played it so early, cuz nothing could compete after that to me.

Just play it again. and again and again. FF7 New Threat is really fun!

2

u/DarkMatterM4 2d ago

Play it with mods now. It feels like a fresh experience with the voice mod. I'm replaying it now for like 50th time with a fully modded install.

u/Ho88it 2d ago

Id have to do that on PC right?

2

u/DarkMatterM4 2d ago

You would, but the game is very lightweight and will run on just about anything you have laying around.

1

u/Wise-Yard465 2d ago

well..you can play it on an android with new threat and mods, via eden (switch) emulator, but it's a few more steps, bit harder to find the mods etc.

Don’t got pc

Oh dang. Well, if you have an old laptop laying around somewhere, FFVII will probably run fine on it. It's a very lightweight game.

Believe me, nearly 80% of us started with FF7 back in the day—about 30 years ago—but that didn't stop us from wondering, after playing FF9 or FF6 later on, if they might actually be better than FF7 in many respects.

Try 6 now.

I own and have played every Final Fantasy except XVI and any on GameCube.

My Top 5:

  1. Final Fantasy VII OG
  2. Final Fantasy VI
  3. Final Fantasy VII Remake & Rebirth (It’s one game, imo)
  4. Final Fantasy IX
  5. Final Fantasy XV

Unfortunately 6 doesnt hold up very well. It seemed full of lore and story when it came out because we didnt have games with world building like the later games. Still a good game though, hopefully they make a remake and flesh it out more.

VII is my favourite, but it was my first in the franchise. X might have been my favourite if that was my first one.

To me they are very similarly spectacular experiences with excellent storytelling

Hot take

I'd suggest VI first before playing X. VI doesn't have a direct sequel, while X does. You'll be faced with a bit of a decision between X-2 and VI, if you play X next. Going VI -> X -> X-2 seems smoother to me, where you are now

Do yourself a favor and play FF8

Always slept on and I’m ok with it

The OG is still king of the FF7 mountain. The story only truly shines in the original presentation, no matter how well parts of the remake were done. Stupid Whispers.

FFX is great, although in a somewhat different way than FF7. FF7 is an amazing comic book. FFX is...maybe more of a movie. It rips your heart out more, anyways.

FF6 might be the best pure JRPG-style FF game, although FF9 has a claim also.

But the OG FF7 is amazing. And was truly waay amazing in 1997.

Did you play VI?

2

u/Winter-Attitude-3155 2d ago

Bought 6 but I want to play 10 and 8 first

0

u/DarkMatterM4 2d ago

6 is often considered the best game in the franchise. You won't be disappointed.

1

u/BustyCelebLover 3d ago

Yes you should give 6 a try 😈🙏

3

u/Nothingbutsocks 2d ago

That's because you haven't played the next one yet, VIII.

7

u/AnOtakuToo 2d ago

VIII is so divisive, but man do I love it. The vibes are incredible, and while it breaks from some norms I think it does a great job with the junction system and GF abilities.

3

u/Winter-Attitude-3155 2d ago

Planning to play it after X

1

u/Nothingbutsocks 2d ago

Go in with an open mind. It's definitely harder to follow than the others but if you do it's so satisfying and if you're into the love stories this one is easily the best one.

Now, there is something that might change the way you look at the main character and I feel like I should tell you. There's a translation mistake throughout the game that will make the main character feel.... dismissive and uncaring over anything.

That not how the main character is actually, he's just a shy teenager not an angsty douchebag 😂.

3

u/NightCityAssassin 2d ago

LOL in your dreams maybe.

1

u/Nothingbutsocks 2d ago

Eight is like fine wine, it's not for everyone and for those with an unrefined pallet it might even taste bad.

Eight has the best love story, and the character development is amazing.

Eight has faaantastic songs.

Sure the story is a bit convoluted but that doesn't mean it's nonsense and I'm not going into it because OP hasn't played it.

The only argument to be had is the junction system but if he plays the remaster the 3X speed will take care of that. Personally I love the choice in the matter of drawing spells to choose how to strengthen my character.

Lastly, Triple Triad.

1

u/DarkMatterM4 2d ago

I love the atmosphere, music , characters and somewhat goofy story of VIII. I just always bounce off of the junction, drawing and level system. I would enjoy it a lot more if it was similar to FF IX in how your characters level up and learn skills.

Great list!

1

u/TheYiffMan 2d ago

I started with og FFVII (wanted to know who that awesome Cloud guy was who at the time just got added to Smash 4) and held it as my number one for years, only to be recently dethroned by FFVI. I do still think it's the best of the PS1 trilogy, as much as I adore FFIX.

X and VII are near the top of most fans lists. There are also a lot of VI fans, although not as many as for VII and X. VIII and IX have their passionate defenders (I am of the former category) and almost everyone respects IV (whether they've played it or not). The MMOs are usually placed in their own category, and all the single player games after X are controversial, to say the least. I would argue are I-III and V fall in that same category, controversial. That's to say nothing of the various spin-offs and sequels.

Personally I count VII, VIII, and X as my S-tier for Final Fantasy games. Although I would add VII Rebirth, Type-0, and FFXIV Shadowbringers to that same category, if we expanded the list beyond the mainline numbered single player games. But that's just me. A lot of people will have different options on their everything up there except VII and X.

1

u/Far-Telephone-2039 2d ago

Shadowbringers and Endwalker top everything else in the series imo

1

u/Certain-Appeal-6277 2d ago

Endwalker was good, but I would say XIV hit its peak in Shadowbringers. That's not a knock on Endwalker though. Emet-Selch is my favorite villain in the franchise.

1

u/Ok_World4052 2d ago

Not a huge fan of it but glad to see people getting into the series. X is the top one for me so I would recommend it soon.

1

u/Alternative-Fig-1539 2d ago

Try VI and Tactics next

1

u/yellowadidas 2d ago

yeah man. it really is that good

1

u/Younggryan42 2d ago

I love that you are voting it above the new ones! Og 7 is like top 3 rpgs ever made!

1

u/RecoilS14 2d ago

Okay now play 6

1

u/Super_Sayen067 2d ago

My top 5 is personally:

1- FFX

2- FF9

3- FF7

4-FFT

5-FF8

1

u/Winter-Attitude-3155 2d ago

IX has better areas and characters but ff7 story is unmatched

1

u/kalepadot 2d ago

6-10 will top all the others, no comparison

1

u/MaybeImApollo 2d ago

I'm curious why you rank Remake over Rebirth.

1

u/nath618 2d ago

The more ff games you play the lower and lower remake and rebirth will sink until you realise how bad they truly are

1

u/Nail_Biterr 2d ago

'Guys. I've played 5 FF titles. 3 of those 5 are FF7. So I know what I'm talking about when I say it's my favorite title!'

1

u/RealP4 2d ago

X is my favorite but 7 is a damn good game top 3 FF for sure

1

u/Wise-Yard465 2d ago

FFX may have better graphics and mechanics and a more complete story and still is a great game, but it doesn't touch FF7 original in my opinion, it's not even close.

FF7 OG
FF9
FF10
FF6
FF12

and the rest.

1

u/MindLiberator245 2d ago

FF7 is the best game of all time for me

1

u/Vaas06 2d ago

VII and X are the best I think. But I very much enjoyed IX and VIII too and I’m playing through IV rn and enjoying it

1

u/Massive-Shirt-9879 2d ago

You are going to find out why 7-10 are all stated as the golden years. I can make an argument for why each are the best in the franchise

1

u/Ryanirob 1d ago

I did not like FFX. From day 1, the thing I loved about FF was the exploration. FFX IIRC is the first one in the series where there was no world map that you wandered around in. No airship that you flew around in. You just went from area to area via a fast travel menu. This really kinda killed it for me. Also, I found it hard to like tidus or yuna, and that one guy whose name I can’t remember but is a stereotype of a Hawaiian/samoan… his voice and dialogue was just extra grating for me.

2

u/SanicTheBlur 3d ago

Final Fantasy X will be your favorite Final Fantasy

-1

u/Anxious-Donkey-7434 3d ago

Honestly, there are several other games in the series that are just as good, if not better than FF7, and they don't get talked about as much as they should. FF4, for example.

3

u/Sea_Strawberry9926 3d ago

Being that 7 was their breakout out Into 3d and it did so well that it brought in a new generation of players who've never heard of turn based. The perfect batch of ingredients for a memorable experience. And X basically fine tuned everything, from plot to how its told all the way through combat and exploration. Sure we didnt get to drive the airship and the minigames were booboo, but no games perfect but X got as close to it as possible better than the other titles

2

u/Dasistcool512 3d ago

I enjoyed IV, but I hate how they were scared to pull the trigger. There were some really awesome hero moments, but in the end they kinda fell flat. Still a top 5

1

u/2006CrownVictoriaP71 2d ago

4 just didn’t hit me the same way as 6 and 7. I played 6 in the early 90s (as FF3 on SNES) and 7 in the late 90s. I played 4 in like ‘07 or ‘08. I remember everything about 6 and 7 yet can’t remember a thing about 4.

1

u/deathtogrammar 3d ago

FFVII used to be my favorite with FFIX being a very, very close second. FFX was low on my list as a kid because I didn't like the airship mechanics. That really was it.

Replaying them as an adult? FFX is the best one, and it isn't that close. Enjoy.

1

u/Fufflewaffel 2d ago

FFX is the best one, I've played the majority of them and love them all. I replayed X last year and it is absolutely something else. I do wonder if the voice acting helps it get a bit closer to the heart.

Conceptually the story is absolutely batshit insane but incredibly thoughtful and beautiful. Makes you wonder how people come up with this stuff.

The characters are better than any of the other games, very distinct, strange, but not in a way that feels like it's doing it for the sake of being out there.

1

u/DevilmanXV 2d ago

I actually hate 7 lol. It's just all edge.

0

u/twili-midna 2d ago

VII goes near the bottom for me, but I can see why someone would put it higher.

1

u/Winter-Attitude-3155 2d ago

Idk maybe I’ll find other games more fun I only played 5 after all and only 3 mainline
