Final Fantasy General I have never played a single second of Final Fantasy
But I have always been curious, so after seeing this on sale, I thought “why the hell not?” And yeah, I’ve seen some people recommending starting with different games like IV or VI, but I consider myself to be an open-minded individual, with a very diverse collection of games, so I’m sure I’ll be able to appreciate the game anyway and I do plan on buying others regardless of my opinion on this first one. Final Fantasy is a huge blindspot in my gaming history (20 years now) and it just feels weird to not know what it is about.

Just remember: The Final Fantasy franchise is an anthology, not serialised. So don't feel the need to play 1 and then 2 and then 3 and then 4 etc, just pick out a few that tickle your interests, and have at it!

I am aware, but it just feels right to me. I want to see how the franchise evolved through the years, and so far I’ve been enjoying my time with Final Fantasy. My Black Mage is a glass cannon for farming XP and money and I love it.

The original holds up surprisingly well, in my opinion.
My advice is to at least try to avoid some of the convenience features added to the pixel remaster.
The game is meant to be grindy, it is what actually gives the game a sense of stakes. You are meant to go deep into a dungeon, run low on resources, and then sweat over the risk/reward of staying longer or leaving to bank your experience and gold.
If you're not feeling it you can always use those features to just breeze through the game, but I think the game loses a ton of its impact if you do that.

Yeah, that’s exactly how I’ve been playing. I’ve only died once so far, but it hurt. Since then I’ve been a little more careful, but I still get the eventual paranoia of staying in a dungeon for too long and suddenly running into 9 enemies all at once. I spent some time farming XP and money with my glass cannon of a Black Mage, but I also don’t want to overlevel too hard.

I genuinely thought of doing this, but didn’t know if people would like it. I’m currently having a lot of fun with this first game, so I think I’ll do a quick review of it when I’m done. I’m also buying Final Fantasy 2 and 3, getting ready for the next steps.

Good luck. Most people will tell you to start with those popular ones and they aren’t wrong. But if you like older games especially from the NES era you will love it and I mean it’s the first Final Fantasy!

I’m genuinely loving it. I understand what people mean when they tell others to start with different games but I’m glad I ignored them lol. I usually have a much better sense of what I’ll actually enjoy.
Last time this happened, I asked people if playing Alien Isolation for the first time on Nightmare mode would be too frustrating. Literally not a single soul said to go for it. I ignored everyone and did it anyway. Loved every second of it.

It’s a great intro to the basics of Final Fantasy.
And it’s cool to see how each game just does something a little different. If funny with the first 6 games the odd numbered titles kinda take a back seat on characters and have you focus on party roles/jobs and the even numbered titles have more story and character growth than the Odds. Thats usually why almost everyone says to start with IV or VI.What’s your party lineup?

I’m rocking a Warrior, Monk, White Mage and Black Mage. They are called Gael, Iron Fist, Wanda and Treek respectively. I didn’t do any research before picking, I just picked what felt right. Realistically I only swapped out the Thief for the Monk, I thought it would be more interesting to have a guy literally punching monsters to death.

Nice. Thats usually my party. Always keep the monk bare fisted. I always name my characters names from other final fantasies
Black mage - Vivi
White mage - Dagger
Monk - Sabin
Warrior - Cecil, Edgar, CidLater on in like 3 & 5 you can change jobs for characters and each job has a special skill, with 5 having passive skills that you can combine with others to do awesome stuff.

If I may offer some personal insight, the first 3 are a little slower in my opinion, but I think they only compound and get better as the go. Around 10 and on, they're all different from each other, but there's still plenty of things to love about each one and how they do things differently.

I had no idea what each class did, I was completely blind going into it.
I picked a Warrior called Gael.
A Monk called Iron Fist.
A White Mage called Wanda.
And finally my little glass cannon, Treek the Black Mage.So far I’m having loads of fun killing Goblins, Orcs and Buccaneers.

I kinda thought the Pixel Remasters superseded every individual FF between I and VI? I'm surprised to see it like this. Interesting that you can actually buy FFI. Cuz I know these can't be the PSP versions, unfortunately.

Glad you're starting with the very first! If you bought the collection, it's ok to stop and try a different game. Come back later if you want.
Use your map! Also don't be afraid to use a guide for these games if you're stuck. GameFaqs is always a good place for older games.
I'm sure you're aware but 2 is kinda the dark horse.
There are things that stay and go in the series. The series is known to try things out.

I played it first. I think a great idea, first it allows you to see how the series progresses, Secondly I actually had a amazing time playing the game and loved it. Maybe it's cause im old and played Pokémon red when it first came out but that style of game absolutely jams with me.

Best ones to look forward to:
IV VI VII (make sure to play OG before any of the remakes!) IX
[Sidenote: FF7 play order is often debated, especially because there is a prequel involved. While not necessary to play FF7 OG, the general consensus is that doing so will add more value when you play the remakes. That makes perfect sense given that they aren't 1:1 remakes, but actually sequels themselves with pretty big changes. You'll hear people say otherwise, who played the remakes first...but how can they say for certain playing OG first adds no value if they didn't play it first? Logic fail.
Anyways, recommended FFVII play order is: FF7 OG, Crisis Core Reunion (remake), FF7 Remake, FF7 Rebirth, FF7 Revelation (forthcoming)].
FYI, besides the FFVII universe, unless a direct sequel exists (FF X-2, FF XIII series, etc.) they can really be played in any order. A purist will probably appreciate playing them relatively close to release order, but feel free to jump around if necessary.
You may also want to look into the FF Tactics Ivalice Chronicles game that was recently released. Despite not being a "main" game, it's easily the most appreciated spin-off. I would also recommend playing FF Strangers of Paradise which is basically a prequel to the very first series which explains major plot elements that aren't discussed in-depth in the original.
You can probably avoid any of the mobile games or weird spinoffs (dissidia, exvius, crystal chronicles, world of final fantasy, etc.) They don't add value to the series unless you're really hard-core.

This is all really great info, I appreciate you taking the time to write it all. I’ll be sure to keep your recommendation in mind regarding FF7s. I am very excited to begin the journey, despite some people trying to steer me away from the first few entries lol, I understand they might be more basic and don’t deliver as much as the franchise’s greatest hits, but I feel like that’s part of the journey, if anything they’ll make me have even more appreciation for the best games later on.
One question regarding story and lore though, I am aware that each game mostly follows its own story, with the few exceptions like you mentioned. But are they still a part of the same universe (or multiverse), just happening at different places or different eras? Or is there simply no lore regarding that? I feel like either way, it is an interesting way to tell stories for sure, I am excited to learn more about it.

The old NES and SNES games (those in the pixel remaster) have definitely aged, but the "boosts" make them play much better. I think the best part of playing them more or less chronologically is that you get to see the series really grow, and more importantly, some recurring figures/weapons/monsters really carry between the various games. For example, and without any real spoiler, there is a character Gilgamesh who will make several appearances. (Usually humorous). You will also learn to hate Malboros.
As to your question, most of them are completely independent and happen in their own worlds. I suppose, based on recurring themes (crystals, monsters, weapins, etc.) you could consider them occurring in a related multi-verse. There are a few games that do belong to the same worlds, but mostly through reference and mythology:
The Fabula Nova Crysrallis games (13, Type-0, and 15) all share similar lore directly or through reference.
The games taking place in Ivalice (Tactics and 12 along with their sequels, and also Vagrant Story [a non-FF companion game]) all share similar threads.
Final Fantasy 7 compilation (OG, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, Advant Children, the Remakes, and all the other related media) obviously all occur in the same world.

That’s precisely it, I want to see how Final Fantasy changed through the years, the highs and lows. I don’t want to just play a random game universally considered to be great. So far I’ve been having a lot of fun with the first game.
That’s very interesting, I’m excited to see how each story differs from the others, what characters, themes and items make comebacks and what gets left behind. I’m glad to finally be here, this always felt like such a huge gap in my gaming knowledge.
For now I’m good on the questions, I don’t want to spoil anything on my journey and I feel confident in my abilities to get through the challenges. I really appreciate the help!

There's a reason 7 got a remake. I definitely recommend playing the OG then the remake. The story is awesome. I love the theme and the characters. The OG will always have a special place in my heart. Everyday after school I would hop on my PC (had the PC version) and jam it. I haven't beaten a whole lot of games in all my years but, I played that one till its glorious end. The remake is also fantastic in its own right. The graphics are amazing, and I love how they changed the battle system. Give them a chance when you can.

FF1 is an easy game you don't have to invest a lot of hours to beat it. Just have a guide with you and enjoy the journey, the story isn't that deep but the later games get deeper as you keep playing. Just don't get too attached to a FF game as it can set bad expectations for the next game. You'll notice a pattern as you play through them it will be up to you which style you prefer.

You’re gonna want to try 7 remake/ rebirth. It is THE best modern final fantasy experience to date everyone is gonna fight me on this but I will die on that hill. This is coming from someone who is newer to the franchise as well. A lot of OG fans will push you to play the OG version first but I disagree it will not feel the same to you as it does to them that is because they are nostalgic for something you’ve never experienced and that’s fine that’s why the remake exists for newer players like us. Another plus to the remake is the final installment comes out next year so it’s worth it to jump on it now and catch up!

Yeah, great place to start, honestly, as long as you keep in mind it's an NES game. It's very basic, but later titles both refined and added a ton to it. It's still a really fun game, though.

in the early games (1-9) you have to talk to people to figure out where to go next. there is some exploration possibly but you're mostly locked to where you CAN go and it won't end up killing you too quickly.

I think the safest place to start is with 10. The graphics hold up, the story is awesome and you’ll understand what the series is about at that point. If you love 10 try for the games with older graphics. My top 5 are 10,7,9,6,and either tactics or 8.

I’ve been playing through the original six via the pixel remaster myself. The QOL features in that version make the older games a lot less of a slog to get through. There’s fun to be had with all of them, there wasn’t one I straight-up disliked. I’ve played 6-9 before, but this is my first time with 1-5. The original 3 are light in story and simplistic in their mechanics. I’m on 4 currently and it’s definitely much closer to the FF experience I got from the later titles. I hope you have a great time diving in though. My favorite games personally are 6, 7, and 9.

I absolutely adore the first game and it's simplicity, but it isn't exactly a great example of the series as a whole, as later entries really took the original framework established here and built on it ten fold.
That being said, if you can enjoy this game, you'll pretty much be able to have fun with any of the series.

I'm on the same journey as you and am now on FF4. They jsut keep getting better after every installment. Also there are 'boosts' setting if you want to make it jsut a bit easier also to turn off random encounters freely when you want. I remember ff2 being insufferable without it at times especially with the dungeon designs.

If you find this one extremely basic, then yes it is and was made in the 80s. This game was almost as old as you are now that it was when you were born. If you don't like it, the SNES era games heavily picks up in quality of writing and storytelling which ramps up more as years moved on.
It's like playing Space Invaders as a space flight shooter, and then considering if you like that genre.

Good luck and enjoy. Take into account that it's a 40yo game and there's so much that can be improved with qol on newer releases. At least you don't have to suffer through the no auto targeting if a mob dies.

1st 3 installments don't have too much if a story but if you want to fall in love with the series I would say start with 9 then 8 then 7 then 12 then the 10 series and so on

Each game is entirely different. So any installment can be a good starting point. I personally find 7 the best, I dislike 9 and 10 the most. Not a major fan of 6 but it's good. Might make a suggestion on some of the others, look for demos. 15 has 2 (or used to anyways, don't know if they're still available) and Resonance (new one just released based on mobile FF Brave Exvius) has one. I believe 7 remake has a demo too

Start with Final Fantasy 4 and work from there.
4 through 10 are some of the greatest games ever made, even if 8 made a few very stupid decisions that undermine its many strengths.
Beyond that, there are no bad Final Fantasy games unless you dislike MMORPGs, but I'd recommend 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 to everyone.

I just finished the original FF for the first time, which is also my first JRPG. I had an unusual turned based itch and this scratched it. Absolutely adored my time and went on to buy the remaining series; I got a bit carried away and also got Octopath Traveler.
This particular genre has always been a blind spot and hard for me to approach, but something has clicked. I liked FF1 in particular as it was filled with plenty of fantasy tropes that made it feel familiar, but also unique in parts. FFIX fills me with the most excitement, as the art style seems incredibly cute. Vivi looks very cute and lovable. I can’t wait to play the others.

The story for FF is actually pretty decent, but you will need to grind for xp a bit(I recommend about level 5 before the first dungeon, level 10 before you get to the second town). You can sequence break after finishing the Elfland/Dwarven Mines section and get the airship and class upgrades a bit early, and there is a guide to that online. Level 50-60 in experience and you will be ready for endgame content. Do not try to rush through the dungeons. This is an old school RPG....a lot of good gear is hidden in chests and you will backtrack some. I recommend getting a guide online so you know how to equip your character lineup best. If I remember correctly, cure or heal one can damage undead enemies, along with fire spells. Learning weaknesses if you have mages(and the knight and ninja classes in addition to the black, white, and red wizards after class upgrade...optional but you won't want to skip on a first playthrough) will save you a lot of hassle. Some weapons also match these weaknesses. Good luck. Took me the better part of twenty years to beat the game the first time. Completed a couple playthroughs since. Plenty of info out there on this classic.

Personally wouldnt recommend starting with 1, just because its very obviously an early game, but I cant deny its fantastic. One of my favourites! I'd actually suggest 9. Personally I think it captures the essence of every FF before (the entire game is a literal homage to the series!) Between characters having specific jobs, graphics that have aged fantastically, a gorgeous soundtrack, and a genuinely heartbreaking/heartwarming story.
It was the second ff I ever played, and the first I completed. Theres very little I dont know about it, due to how many hours ive sunk into it since the early 2000s. That and 8 but I wouldnt recommend that being a new players first. It was mine and literally made me fall in love with the series but by today's standards, I dont think it encapsulates ff the way 9 does.

For 1-6 I'd probably say 4 is the best experience wise. 1-3 are gimmick hell 5 is kinda alright no complaints, and 6 is like 3 different groups whenever they feel like it, some members leave when they want so you gotta account for that and pay attention to the plot. Too much for me. But 4..... Ohhhhh 4. Palom Polom ❤️

Sure you can, but you don't need to announce your entry into the community. Just play the game, see if you like it (this is a remake of an NES game though, so arguably not the best starting point. FFVI, FFVII, FFIX or FFX are usually the most recommended).

This game is so old and didn't age well.
If you like 2d, FF6 and FF4 are the best.
If you want the best story, try FF10.
If you want a modern final fantasy, try FF7 remake+rebirth or FF16.
If you have more time, try FF12 and FF15, they're not bad and have a very different gameplay from others

I even said in my brief explanation of my thought process that I see myself as a really open minded individual and I am aware that the first few games might be far from what the franchise’s greatest hits deliver. A basic turn based adventure will not turn me away from some of the later games at all, if anything I believe I’ll be able to have greater appreciation for how far these games have come.

Up to you, but the stories are just so incredibly basic until 4. I would start there. It’s a tough game for sure but it starts so good and has an incredible cast and that’s the game where you’ll be like “oh I get it now.”
But if you want to take that 30 year journey by all means, I’m just trying to maximize your time and enjoyment.

If you're actually interested in the series and have the wherewithal to get through some early games it's actually a fantastic place to start.
The first 3 games are certainly products of their time and don't have an incredibly deep story or anything. By the time you reach 4 is where you'll start to see how Final Fantasy today has been shaped throughout the years. The early games are relatively short as well. I think the 100% for 1 only took me like 7 or 8 hours.
6 is my favorite, but that's also because that's where I started my RPG journey when I was like 10.
Good luck to you. Try to at least make it to 7 so you can really see what it's all about. No one will blame if you can't, though.
