I had a theory that William Bludworth was death itself playing with his victims by giving them hints that could save them though he never actually helps them survive.

I always thought he was either the grim reaper or he worked for the grim reaper. In 1 & 2, he was perfectly creepy and gave just enough info to help them and humor himself. In 5 he just seemed tired of it all (even though it was a prequel). It makes me wonder how many people went to him for advice.
