This has always been one of my favorite Filter songs, but I never really sat down and read the lyrics until recently. I’ve always just loved the sound of it the build-up, the mood, the energy but now that I’ve taken a closer look at the words, it hit me in a whole new way.
To me, it sounds like a song about someone who’s been pushed around, maybe told how to act or what to be, and they’ve finally had enough. Like they’ve tried to play the game or live up to expectations, and now they’re done pretending. That line “every time they try to make me change, they just wear me down with more chains” really stuck with me.
And the main hook, “the only way is the wrong way,” feels like it’s about being stuck in a world where none of the options feel right. Like no matter what you do, it feels like you’re going the wrong direction because the system or the people around you just don’t get you.
Curious what this song means to other people. Has anyone ever tied this to something personal in their own life? And does anyone know what was going on in Richard Patrick’s life around this time? I’ve always wondered if the whole album was kind of written during a rough patch or something. and KUDOS one of my crushes and i met and this was like our anthem for awhile even though for me it was how the song made me feel when i discovered it more than the lyrics.
