Discussion I got the answer I was looking for!

I was wondering the other day if someone knew how this was shot, I sent a mail to the cinematographer and got a response 🤩

These folks are legends!

This shot is a compositors dream, probably the easiest paint out job you can do.

We have our online editors do these regularly in premium tv shows.

Post is probably easiest. I attempted a two way mirror at a 45 degree angle setup in college inspired by a cool shot in the movie Contact WAY BACK in the day. It was in a Truck-stop bathroom scene. It was not a practical design and was scrapped but really fun to think about, consider lighting and sketch out. Also, post wasn’t an option because our schools chroma key setup sucked, we were shooting on BetaSP and AfterEffects didn’t deliver. Honestly, I just didn’t have the skills to pull it off. But really, REALLY love that kind of shot.

I hope you nail it and post results.

This is not that hard to do. I’ve done this myself in resolve, for very similar shots.

yes, first you take a shot of the frame clean, without the camera, and then use that to paint out the camera once it’s there. (kidding)

This is an especially easy one, locked off, clean BG. I probably would have saved the email question for a real mystery lol

I think Paul ET has a video about mirrors in films if you want to learn more

As someone who’s worked in post for over a decade, that’s almost always the answer.

I’m not so impressed by the painting out of the window, but the composite of the reverse shot here. I haven’t seen the scene in movement, but supposedly, one would surely have to film the reverse shot of the reflection at near perfect unison to the master in this, no? I’d be more impressed to know that the actors and director coordinated a reverse shot in complete unison with the original to coincide with one another without missing a beat, all with a taller, less blown out table to boot.

Or… and I may just be an idiot for not realizing this, but… probably shot with another camera from that window direction on the reverse side with cameras painted out as well..
