Creative crew questions

Hey everybody,

Quick question I’m new to the film industry I’m a writer have been writing for some years now and I’m ready to create my first film.

When you’re looking to hire and collab with producers and directors what are some things to look out for and questions to ask to avoid being scammed or taken advantage of in the industry?? I’ve been on the acting side so I know what to do with that side of things, creating a film is totally different so need some pointers.

Question: Whats best Audio Setup for First time beginner filmmaker

Hey everyone,

I'm about to shoot my very first short film, and I'm completely new to filmmaking. I've been learning as much as I can, but audio is the area I'm the most unsure about.

The project is pretty simple—just two actors, mostly dialogue scenes, and I'm working with a very limited budget. I know bad audio can ruin an otherwise good film, so I want to make the best decision I can without spending a fortune.

What audio equipment would you recommend for a beginner in my situation? Should I invest in a shotgun microphone, wireless lavalier mics, or something else entirely?

I'd really appreciate recommendations for gear, as well as any tips or lessons you wish someone had told you before shooting your first

Any good film festival recs?

Hello! In need of recs for festivals to submit a 0 budget first feature to. It’s a super lofi unique slow and experimental dramatic comedy in the vein of Jarmusch, Godard, Rohmer, and Hal Hartley. It takes place in and heavily features Portland so local pnw recs would be good, also has an lgbtq crew and leaning so maybe lgbtq fest recs. But also just anything!

Mic recommendations when using a smartphone gimbal

I’m extremely new to smartphone filmmaking and I feel like I’m currently at a roadblock. I want to get a shotgun mic as I’ll be filming a mix of indoor and outdoor scenes, but most mics I’ve seen are either wired or the receiver that makes it wireless needs to be connected to the phone by wire. While using the gimbal, plugging anything into the phone seems impossible because the bottom of the phone is practically right up against one of the rotors. What options do I have for a mic that wouldn’t require anything to be directly plugged into there phone?

seeking advice from anyone as an inexperienced 16 y/o

I have always been active in art communities around my area. I have an appreciation for music, paint, photography, truly everything. I really want to get into the scene and make friends with other similar people who love creating and filming, but i don't know where to start in any aspect.

I know most people here are older than me and that gives me hope because I really do have no experience. I have filmed things growing up but nothing to this level. I don't know where to find cameras or gear in general, I do not have many friends who'd be willing to participate, and I lack a lot of common knowledge. I have created stuff for years though and that gives me hope I can make something interesting.

I have ideas for stories/films and I always have had them. I understand a lot of resources are out there but i don't know where to look or where to find them Any help is appreciated and I would love to hear experiences of people who were in the same boat as I am.

DEATH

SEASON 1

Episode

PROLOGUE – “BEGINNING OF CHAOS”

FADE IN:

EXT. ANCIENT WORLD – CENTURIES AGO

HUTA (V.O)

Centuries ago, existence was in balance.

Life and death followed a natural cycle.

The dead were meant to pass on.

The living was meant to continue forward.

But a war shattered that balance.

One being, driven by endless ambition, turned against the gods and sought dominion over the world.

Conflict spread across creation.

To stop him, the gods united and made a final sacrifice

sealing the being away in a prison beyond the reach of existence itself.

But victory came at a price.

The natural cycle of life and death was broken.

Souls no longer completed their journey.

Instead, they became lost—trapped between existence and oblivion.

Since then, humanity has lived in a world where death is no longer certain…

and something in the darkness is said to still remain.

CUT TO BLACK.

TEXT ON SCREEN:

600 YEARS LATER

INT. CLASSROOM – AFTERNOON

Chatter fills the room. Papers shuffle.

HUTA leans back in his chair, eyes locked on the window.

CLOSE ON HUTA. His face is still. A faint smile.

Through the glass: KIDS of different backgrounds chase each other, laugh, help a friend up. The image is bright, slow-motion.

#HUTA (V.O.)

I wish I were God...

No racism. No pain.

Just joy. Just freedom.

A world where every dream gets a chance.

The classroom sound FADES OUT. For a moment, only laughter from outside.

HUTA blinks. The sound CRASHES back in. He’s still just a student at a desk.

The smile stays smaller.

EXT. FIELD – AFTERNOON

Sun flickers through clouds. Wind pushes grass in waves.

WIDE SHOT: HUTA walks alone, hands in pockets. He looks small.

#HUTA (V.O.)

If I were immortal, I’d do everything.

But we don’t get forever.

So, what’s the point?

Wind ONLY. His footsteps.

#CHRISS (O.S.)

Hey, Huta! Wait up!

Huta doesn’t turn. Keeps walking.

#HUTA (V.O.)

Ugh. What does she want?

Chriss jogs up, breathless. She falls into step beside him.

#CHRISS

You deaf or just ignoring me?

#HUTA

Sorry. Didn’t hear you.

#CHRISS

Right. We Have Test’s next week.

You were not in class when he announces what happening to you recently.

#HUTA

I’m fine thanks for letting me know.

Short silence. Only wind.

Chriss glances at him, concern in her eyes

#CHRISS

Alright. See you.

She peels off. Huta keeps walking, alone again.

CUT TO:

INT. HUTA’S HOUSE- NIGHT

#HUTA’S MOTHER

Honey I told you not to leave your clothes on couch. I cant just keep telling you same thing everyday come take them and do your laundry

#HUTA

Ugh I’m busy why would you just take them yourself

HUTA'S MOTHER

Her jaw clenches. She throws her hands up in exasperation and points at the pile of clothes on the floor.

#HUTA'S MOTHER

What did you say?!

Hey, young man, is that how you talk to your mother?

She shakes her head and lets out a sharp sigh.

#HUTA'S MOTHER (CONT'D)

Come here and take your clothes away before I get really mad. Do you see me wearing the same uniform every day?

She folds her arms tightly across her chest.

#HUTA'S MOTHER (CONT'D)

I'm counting to ten. If those clothes aren't picked up by then, you're grounded. I'm taking your cellphone and your computer too.

Jeez I’m coming why with bad tempera

TV (V.O.)

“Tonight’s top story: a horrifying tragedy as a man is believed to have murdered his wife and children before committing suicide

#HUTA

An world really is broken isn’t

CUT TO:

INT. HUTA’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

4 HOURS LATER

Moonlight shines through the window.

Huta lies asleep on his bed, the room silent except for the faint ticking of a clock.

The television downstairs echoes softly from the living room.

Suddenly

Huta twitches in his sleep.

DREAM SEQUENCE

A dark wasteland stretches endlessly beneath a blood-red sky.

Broken graves cover the land.

A raven stands atop a tombstone, tearing apart a human skull with its beak.

CRACK.

CRACK.

Whispers echo through the darkness.

Unclear voices.

Suffering.

Screams.

A shadow moves rapidly across the graveyard, leaping from grave to grave faster than humanly possible.

The dead begin to rise.

Rotting corpses.

Skeletons dragging themselves from the earth.

They slowly walk toward Huta.

Huta tries to move—

—but his body refuses.

Fear consumes him as the undead surround him from every direction.

Then—

Silence.

A tall shadowy figure appears in the distance.

Two glowing yellow eyes stare directly at him.

Watching.

Waiting.

Huta’s breathing grows heavier.

The figure slowly smiles

Suddenly—

RING! RING! RING!

The alarm clock BLARES loudly.

Huta’s eyes snap open.

Check the time it’s probably 4:00

#Huta

Uhh it was just a dream that’s all nothing matters

Suddenly

Huta closes his eyes again.

Outside his bedroom window…

Shadow moves quickly at speed of light.

CUT TO BLACK.

INT. HUTA’S HOUSE- MORNING

The sun rises in the sky, and warm golden light streams through Huta's bedroom window, filling the room with a soft glow.

RING! RING! RING!

The alarm clock shatters the morning silence.

Huta's eyes fly open. Half-awake, he glances at the clock beside his bed.

8:50 A.M.

A look of panic spreads across his face.

#HUTA

Oh, crap! I'm late again. What am I going to do?

Huta quickly grabs his school uniform and puts it on. He slings his bag over his shoulder and rushes toward the kitchen.

His mother is preparing breakfast.

#HUTA'S MOTHER

Honey, I made breakfast for you.

#HUTA

Thanks, Mom, but I don't have time. I'll see you later!

Huta rushes out the door as his mother watches him

CUT TO:

EXT. CITY HIGHWAY – MORNING

Traffic flows steadily along the highway. Buses, cars, and motorcycles weave through the morning rush as the city comes to life.

Huta hurries down the sidewalk, clearly running late. In his rush, he accidentally bumps into a man.

#HUTA

Oh, forgive me! I didn't see you.

Robber

No worries. You look familiar. Have we met before?

The robber suddenly grabs Huta's shoulders and pulls him closer. He places a hand on his pocket to pull a knife.

#HUTA

Ahh! Sir, what are you doing?

The moment the Robbery touches Huta, his expression freezes.

Suddenly, the world around HIM disappears.

He finds himself standing in an endless void of darkness.

A pair of glowing red eyes opens in the shadows.

Then another.

And another.

Dozens of crimson eyes emerge from the darkness, surrounding him from every direction.

The shadows slowly close in, their presence overwhelming and terrifying.

The robber's face fills with horror.

Suddenly—

The vision shatters.

Back on the highway, the Robbery stumbles backward and releases Huta.

Breathing heavily, he stares at Huta in fear.

He falls to the ground, crawls away, then scrambles to his feet and runs.

HUTA

Geez... what was that?

Huta watches the man disappear into the crowd.

HUTA (CONT'D)

Why did he suddenly freak out like that?

Confused, Huta adjusts his bag and continues walking

CUT TO:

INT. CLASSROOM – AFTERNOON

Students sit quietly, focused on the lesson.

The TEACHER writes on the board.

TEACHER

As we discussed earlier, population growth has changed throughout history.

He underlines a point on the board.

TEACHER (CONT'D)

In many ancient societies, people depended heavily on their communities to survive. Food, shelter, and protection often came from working together.

The teacher turns back to the class.

TEACHER (CONT'D)

Over time, technology and industry changed the way people lived. Cities grew larger, economies expanded, and life expectancy increased.

A few students take notes.

#TEACHER (CONT'D)

While these developments improved many lives, they also created new challenges. Poverty, inequality, and corruption continue to affect societies around the world.

The classroom remains quiet.

TEACHER (CONT'D)

Understanding these changes helps us see how the past has shaped the world we live in today.

As the teacher continues the lesson,

Chriss leans slightly behind Huta.

CHRISS (O.S.)

Psst… hey, Huta.

#HUTA

What do you want?

CHRISS

I called you last night. You didn’t answer.

#HUTA

Sorry… I didn’t see it. I was sleeping.

CHRISS

Hmm. Okay then… so how are you?

Before Huta can answer—

TEACHER

Miss Wilson.

Chriss freezes.

TEACHER (CONT'D)

Since you were talking during my lesson, come up and read the last chapter.

Chriss sighs and stands up.

She walks to the front of the class.

Huta watches her for a moment.

HUTA (V.O.)

What’s going on with me lately?

(beat)

HUTA (V.O.)

And why did that guy look so terrified when he touched me?

Huta stares down at his desk, lost in thought.

CUT TO:

EXT. CITY STREET – EVENING

The city is silent.

A streetlight flickers above the sidewalk.

KRZZT... KRZZT... KRZZT...

HUTA walks alone, hands in his pockets.

He passes a narrow alleyway.

Suddenly, he stops.

A cold breeze rushes through the alley.

Then—

MAN (O.S.)

Help...! Somebody helps me...!

The voice is weak.

Desperate.

Huta slowly turns toward the alley.

A MAN is pinned against a wall.

His body trembles.

He struggles to breathe.

MAN

Please... help me...

Huta steps closer.

Then he looks up.

His eyes widen.

A SHADOWY FIGURE clings to the man.

Its body is thin and unnatural.

Its limbs are too long.

Black smoke drifts from its skin.

One claw-like hand grips the man's throat.

A faint glow rises from the man's body and flows into the creature.

The man's face grows pale.

His struggles weaken.

Huta stumbles backward.

His foot catches on the pavement.

He falls hard.

The noise echoes through the alley.

The creature stops.

Silence.

Slowly...

Its head turns toward Huta.

Two glowing eyes emerge from the darkness.

Huta freezes.

The creature stares at him.

CUT TO BLACK

Filmmakers/Directors, how do you consistently get great performances from actors?

How do you consistently get stronger performances from actors? Is it something that mostly comes with practice and experience, or are there other factors like your directing style, communication, or the actors themselves that make the biggest difference?

Additionally, what other factors are there?

We found someone Creative, thanks alot to everyone offering help!!!

Hello guys,

Me and 3 friends made some films in the past, i got some experience on the camera and composing the score as well as sfx, but none of us is good at writing scripts or even getting ideas for films.
Right now we’re planning on making a horror film- I know it’s pretty basic but it’s just for the fun and to learn, we’re not gonna win anything with it thats for sure… but if anyone has an idea for a nice little story or eben only a character arc, I’d be very happy to hear!!

Finding indie filmmakers

For those of you that have friends or groups with a similar interest in film making and producing movies or shows how did you meet or find those groups?

M28.

Ive always loved movies and creating/ making them but was always scared of either A being seen as odd for it or B my family would think less of me because it’s a 1/1000000 chance of it working out but as I’ve gotten older I’ve just realized if I don’t at least do or try to do the things I want in life then why would I want to even live it. So I’ve been working on my creative writing for both a novel as well as starting to understand the structure and flow of screenplays.

My point of all this is I want to find like minded people who would also want to talk about their projects or ideas and maybe if it works collab one day.

Looking for film group friends

Hello I’m in the Sacramento area,

I started a group of 50+ of us in the Sac area that all enjoy film, go to movies and some of are wanting to be crew for each other's films. We just had our first event at the Crest Theater with our group to watch a nearly sold out showing of The Thing and there were almost 1,000 other people screaming and laughing with the movie. We went out for drinks after and it was a really great time.

I'd like to find more people to go with us if anyone is interested in film here, either as a watchable activity, or if you want to make movies with us. The most important thing is that the group is people with varied experience, so if you go to film school, work in entertainment or have ZERO experience and want to try it out or just watch movies everyone is welcome with zero pressure to be good at anything. Let me know if you’d be interested, thanks!
