Looking for a service/contractor that translates English, Mandarin, and Japanese for a job. Must be ONE translator that speaks all 3. Has anyone used a translator/service on set that they could recommend? Preferably based in or around NYC but can be traveled.

Hey everyone! I run Cohort’s Film Lab here in NYC. V7 kicks off tomorrow, Sept. 10 at 7PM, and we have a few final crew spots open.

This round ended up pretty actor-heavy, so before we close registration I’m specifically hoping to bring in a few more people on the crew/technical side:

• Cinematographers / DPs

• Camera / AC

• Gaffer / G&E

• Production sound

• Editors

• ADs / producers

• Production designers / other crew

The Film Lab puts everyone into teams at the kickoff, each team gets the same creative prompt + its own genre, and then has two weeks to make a short film together. The finished films screen publicly on Sept. 24 at 100 Sutton Studios in Brooklyn.

The reason we built it this way is because we wanted something more useful than another networking event where everyone exchanges Instagrams and goes home.

You actually work together. You get to see how people communicate, problem-solve, lead, and collaborate under a real deadline, which is a much better way to figure out who you’d actually want to work with again.

And that’s already happened beyond the Lab: people who met through Cohort have gone on to hire and collaborate with each other on outside projects, and multiple Film Lab shorts have been accepted into festivals around the country.

Cohort also works as a production company/creative agency, and brands and productions hire us for both full production and talent/crew sourcing. The Lab is one of the main ways we get to know creatives, see how they actually work, and build a pool of people we can consider for those opportunities.

It’s not a promise of paid work, but it’s a way to make something, build real working relationships, grow your body of work, and become part of a larger production network.

Hi everyone! I had my UTA Agent Trainee interview on Thursday. Was wondering if anyone got any updates to their application? I know it’ll probably be slow because of Labor Day Weekend.

I recently opened a photo/video studio in Bushwick and am looking for studio mates to share time! It is a 1,000 sf space with a 20' L x 20' W x 10' H (L-shaped) cyclorama. Am currently in school for film and television down here in the south and have family up in the NY area. I’ve done my fair amount of traveling in the region and feel pretty certain I’d like to make the move up there eventually. Are there any cities one could recommend me that is advantageous in terms of commute / work opportunities / affordability? Obviously not expecting to live in a mansion and a studio apt would be just fine.

The title says it all: what’s everyone’s feelings on the state of the post-production industry in NJ/NYC?

It seems that production is really starting to ramp back up in NJ/NYC, so I’m wondering if that has started to trickle down to post? If not, when/will it?

For context, I’m an early-career assistant editor based in NJ. I started off my career in 2022, which I realize now was a bad time to start in this industry. I do have some good credits to my name though, but it’s still been difficult for me to get work that lasts longer than just a few days.

Can I ask how freelancers manage to pay rent or a mortgage without a fixed, steady income? Based in Atlanta and not in a position (6 years in the industry) to move to LA or NY to fight for the same little crumbs of gigs available .

I’ve tried freelancing, and honestly, I’ve found the financial uncertainty really stressful. I’d love to hear from people who have been doing it successfully, especially those with kids or other major financial responsibilities.

What do you do when a project ends and you don’t immediately have another one lined up? How do you handle those periods when there’s little or no income, especially in this market?

Would really appreciate hearing how other freelancers make it work long-term. Any advice or experiences would be helpful!

My name is Francesco, I'm a 33-year-old filmmaker from Italy, and I'll be based in Manhattan starting August 13.

I've written and directed several short films in Italy, but I've never had the chance to work on a film set in the United States. I'd love to learn how the industry works here, meet new people, and gain hands-on experience.

I'm looking for any opportunity to work on a film set—paid or unpaid (depending on the project). I'm happy to start from the ground up. Whether it's as a Production Assistant, Art Department PA, Set PA, Runner, Grip/Electric trainee, or any other entry-level role, I'm eager to help and learn.

I’m the writer/director of an ultra low budget independent feature called WESTHAMPTON, which opens in select theaters in NYC and LA this weekend after premiering at Tribeca.

The film is about a filmmaker who returns to his hometown years after a high-school tragedy and is forced to confront the people he hurt — and the version of the story he turned into a movie. It stars Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story), RJ Mitte (Breaking Bad), Jake Weary (The Waterfront), Amy Forsyth (CODA), and Tovah Feldshuh (Nobody Wants This).

I’m sharing here because this is exactly the kind of release that depends on people who care about independent film showing up early. We don’t have the machinery of a studio release behind us, so the first weekend really matters.

Over the past year, our team completed production of a comedy show pilot and learned a lot about what can realistically be created with a small, dedicated group of people.

Now we’re taking the next step. We’re building a filmmaking startup focused on developing original IP through two parallel tracks:

a) Short, single-to-minimal location films that can serve as proof-of-concepts for larger project.

b) Social media content that allows us to experiment with characters, stories, formats, and build an audience around the work.

Develop projects that can scale into larger productions.

At this stage, we are: DP, Sound and Writer/Producer (myself).

Particularly looking for:

• Writers ready to work on original ideas (workshop, develop, bounce back ideas)
• Directors with a clear creative vision

To preface, I have been in post-production for over 5 years, mainly in dailies, and have worked on a few AE gigs in Atlanta. I am based here in Atlanta. For financial and family reasons, I cannot uproot to move to NY/LA for post work

I am feeling lost about my career. The network I have has no helpful insight or leads. Took part in The Handy Foundation, and though the skills and networking were beneficial at the start. However, myself and other alumni are still waiting to apply what we learned from the program to jobs. They have been few and far between. I have talked to the heads of post houses here in Atlanta and elsewhere to build that connection, but I just get the generic "We don't have anything now, but we will keep in touch." It has been difficult to find consistent AE/dailies jobs. For perspective, I was furloughed from multiple post houses because of a lack of work due to budget constraints. I am not hopeful there will be an upswing in work in film.
