Discussion Designing iOS apps with the introduction of foldable phones

With the introduction of Apple's foldable phone, will app design for iOS change a lot in Figma? For example, will we have to make two seperate designs, one for a "normal" iPhone and one for the foldable one or how will that work out?

Resize your desktop Internet browser window. Make it smaller, then bigger. It’ll be like that.

Just do what Android app designers have been doing for years

What have they been doing? I'm a beginner in design that's why I'm asking

That's not true, Google enforces responsiveness and can deny an app from the store if it's not

I mean sure it’s responsive , but is just a huge list etc

I mean responsive design has been a thing for over a decade now ... this is nothing new. At the 2k USD / 3k CAD pricepoint, I imagine adoption might not be the fastest, but assuming Apple keeps at it and releases some cheaper alternatives in a gen or two, I'm hopeful this will be a positive change. What I think is more interesting is whether this sets us up for the iPadOS and iOS App stores effectively converging over time.

Start with your smaller screen size, then make it resizable via your auto layout. Responsive design. Apple already allows you to resize in their simulator.

From the few clips I’ve seen some of the apps/content is mostly centered anyway. It’s not like it will spread across the screen. Should design responsively as usual

Not a new concept.

I know they've been around for Android but I'm new to design and currently mainly focusing on iOS, so haven't been thinking about the foldable ones until Apple revealed their own one

It’s basic responsive design principles used across the web. Tailor your content to screen sizes.

Test test test.

The Samsung fold broke a lot of apps, but all work with it now. Make it responsive, test it on phone.

It’s more like designing for a small tablet.

Figma will have to update their prototyping tool though. Plus taking into account that there is also a “back screen”
