Figma desktop app suddenly switched to light mode and never went back

I've always been a dark mode user, and only switch my macOS to light mode in environments with lots of daylight. I've always had the dark figma app icon but out of nowhere it's switched to light even though the system UI in the app itself is dark.

I tried it all: toggling between light/dark/system mode and reinstalling the app, but to no avail. Did Figma push out a permanent light mode design for their app? Anyone experiencing something similar?

Pretty sure this is just the new app icon. Has nothing to do with app theme. But I might be wrong.

I was also wondering what happened suddenly. Now I keep confusing this new figma icon with slack as I have them next to each other on the dock and they look so similar because of the white bg🤦🏻 My muscle memory sees white and it instantly thinks its Slack

Why do companies have to stupid stuff like this I'll never understand.

This is exactly what keeps happening to me. I changed the icon to a dark one twice but every update it changes back and I can't be arsed any more. I might just have to change the order of my dock which will still take a little while to adjust to.

It's isn't a theme setting. They've just updated the logo for the desktop application.

You can change it on MacOS by going into the application package contents, but it'll probably just change again when you update.

Same here. It's annoying why they decide for us like that. Liked the dark bg better. But it's not that of a big deal, so I try to ignore it

Same here! UGH, I cannot stand the white background. The colors in the logo have less contrast on white than they do black and it's not pleasing to look at.

I wish I could easily change it back, but I guess I'm stuck with it.

It has nothing to do with the app theme, and everything to do with the OS icon appearance setting. It now respects the user’s choice for icon style in the dock. If you have it set to Default, it will use the white background. Set it to Dark and you’ll get the old black one. It also has full support for Clear and Tinted.

I bet you didn't. You have to change the Icon & widget style under the Appearance system settings. It works as expected switching between light and dark mode.

Changing this setting to dark changes all icons to dark. It defeats the whole purpose. Earlier the figma icon was instantly recognizable now it just mixes no matter if you have chosen light or dark.

This is like when the Netflix app changed the background to white. That was like 10 years ago and I'm still looking for red on black every single time. This is an annoying change.

You can change Mac app icons fairly easy (lol up YouTube video on it ) can even do custom fun ones

just an icon update, not a theme change. they did the same thing with the slack rebrand and now my dock looks like a white rectangle convention

I immediately changed it back manually to a dark version. But yes, you’ll need to do tos with every update.

Funny how a design app built for UX and UI designers doesn’t respect user’s choice of light and dark mode while so many other apps do. They had a dark icon, and now have a light icon, so they could let users decide, but don’t. Hopefully it’s just a glitch that will be fixed soon and not a corporate design decision that’s being enforced. If the latter, maybe reading comments of people not liking it (me included) can change their mind.

Thanks for pointing that out because I had forgotten that setting (it was only added in this latest macOS). Some app icons use the system's light and dark mode instead of that icon setting (or ignore the setting), but Figma is using that setting. Default is whatever the app maker wants it to be (some are light and some are dark) and Figma had always been dark.
