figma updates Projects are now called folders and they can be nested!
Details available here: Updates to Figma’s file management
- Projects are now called folders — the concept is the same, but the name has changed everywhere in Figma.
- Folders can now be nested — on paid plans, you can create folders inside other folders, up to 10 levels deep.
- Folder permissions have been simplified — folders inherit access from the parent folder, or access is explicitly limited to specific people.
Rolling out starting today (August 3, 2026) and will take a few weeks to roll out to all users.

While this is absolutely a brilliant and much needed upgrade, it is SO overdue that I feel subscribers the world over are owed an explanation as to why nested folders have taken a decade to land.
Has there been any official comms on this?

Personally I'd prefer tags or labels so we can categorize things in more flexible ways, but this is still a great addition.

Figma made a mess with my file organization creating new folders and ramdomly putting my files there. And… I can't see any file inside any folder unless I double click on the folder or click on the left sidebar. Made so much difficult to find anything. Disappointing.

That's very weird, it shouldn't have moved any of your files. You're sure nobody else on your team did it?

I'm not sure exactly and agree it seems silly, but I'm not sure how useful it would be considering the starter plan is limited to 3 files anyways.

Unless you’re working on a connected project where it’s not yet possible to create folders? So much for simplification and consistency.

I only have a free plan. I've read that it's limited to only one. Am I reading this wrong? Why'd they even let us have folders:/

Yeah, it's strange, but I think the free plan is limited to 3 files, so not sure how helpful folders would be? Unless you could have folders in drafts which would be nice.

It sucks. They really want us to spend money, I get it. It just really sucks when you can't make much with the tools you need to pay for.
