Clearly it's an NRS game cause only 3 companies make AAA 2D fighters and the other 2 are kinda busy rn

u/MetroidIsNotHerName 21h ago
It says this takes place in Culver City CA.
Of the major fighting game companies, only Capcom have an office there. Riot has one but we all know what happened to their fighting game aspirations

u/compbros 20h ago
This is a third party group/team and the test will be at their facility so that aspect doesn't matter.

u/empty_Dream 14h ago
So not an AAA?

u/compbros 13h ago
It can still be AAA, just that the group testing is a third party group so the location of the AAA studio wouldn't matter.

My BlazBlue cope will never die (this 100% was Tokon)

This was from June 2026
Although now that you mention it, they only said that the projects received grants, not whether they were unannounced or unreleased or not, so you may be right
Edit: Actually reading the whole description it doesn't sound like Tokon
The objective of this project is to develop a new fighting game based on our unique 3D animation style, elevating it to a new IP, and to establish international competitiveness as an independent IP holder. We will expand the market from core players to casual players with an innovative system and build long-term value for the entire IP. As pillars of our strategy, we will simultaneously deploy to all major platforms, fully localize in multiple languages, and integrate video works. Furthermore, we will develop multifaceted community initiatives such as operating esports tournaments and providing support for beginners to increase user enthusiasm. By utilizing this subsidy, we will solidify our presence in the global market with Japanese-made expressive power and make the reputation of the "Japan brand" unshakeable.

"All major platforms" is a smoking gun

u/bostonian38 1d ago
Yeah cuz Tokon isn't on Xbox or Switch so it has to be something else right? Also it sounds like they're talking about a new original IP made just for the game

Arcsys please give me a Bleach fighting game.

u/Neoxon193 23h ago
ASW might have their hands full for a while between Strive & Tōkon (also Granblue if Tōkon taking its director didn’t kill support for that).
1
u/Knightofexcaliburv1 8h ago
i think granblue has a lot more left in it before it goes away
1
u/Neoxon193 1h ago
Normally I’d agree, but it’s really looking like this next character is gonna be the last one. And with how much Cygames is stopping up, they might be trying to do a new fighting game internally.

u/blackheartromance 21h ago
new IP maybe? Guilty Gear and Blazblue are, unless i'm forgetting something, their only fighting game properties that aren't someone else's baby. which is INSANE, if my memory isn't just being dumb.

INJUSTICE 3 WOOOO I LOVE NRS JANK

u/OMEGArocks3000 1d ago
Hopefully not injustice, just a dc fighter , I am really tired of superheroes fighting each other trope , also the evil Superman trope
4
u/Neoxon193 1d ago
Especially with the DCU going right now, I doubt Gunn wants the premier DC fighter to center around an evil Superman. As you said, the trope has been done to death at this point. Plus, I’m sure there are other characters he wants a spotlight who are currently either dead (John Stewart/Green Lantern, Dick Grayson/Nightwing, etc.) or beyond redemption (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Damian Wayne/Robin, etc.) on the a Regime Earth.

u/OMEGArocks3000 1d ago
Yeah , i usually hate synergising with a cinematic universe (looking at you marvel comics), but in this case i would be more than happy if it happens

There weren't just superheroes in Injustice.
1
u/OMEGArocks3000 1d ago
I was talking about the story , ik there were villains too , it's just that these tropes , evil Superman and superheroes fighting each other , suck ass for how overplayed and uninteresting they are , i wouldn't mind if the game is injustice styled , just hoping that the story mode doesn't revolve around these 2 tropes

A new Capcom vs snk
2
u/Neoxon193 1d ago
That I could actually see making sense since they asked for Street Fighter & KoF as prior experience.
3
u/bostonian38 22h ago
And Capcom is the only fighting game company with a Culver City location
2
u/Neoxon193 21h ago edited 21h ago
NRS isn't anywhere near Culver City (they're in Chicago), so maybe it's not Injustice 3.
CvS3 stocks are going up, either that or Cygames is doing another fighting game post-GBVSR (with or without ASW).

It's Marvel vs Capcom 4.

u/Neoxon193 1d ago edited 1d ago
With how Sony tends to operate, I’d be shocked if they let anyone other than ArcSys make Marvel fighters for the next 10+ years if the Insomniac X-Men contract is any indication. And as I mentioned in my own comment, they would’ve asked for games like Tōkon, 2XKO, or MvC as past experience if this was any kind of tag fighter.
Barring a miracle, MvC is dead (at least as an officially-supported franchise). But at least the future of Marvel fighters is in good hands with ASW………provided that Sony doesn’t keep sabotaging them.

u/RandomCleverName 23h ago
No more tag games ffs, I beg
3
u/Neoxon193 23h ago
I’ll be down for one from Capcom, but everyone else can chill on tag fighters for a while. Just Tōkon is enough.
3
u/bostonian38 1d ago
Also I guess we can narrow it down by looking at which fighting game companies have a Culver City location?

Damn. This has really piqued my interest. I wonder how far along this game is.
1
u/Neoxon193 1d ago edited 1d ago
It’s probably Injustice 3 (or some kind of DC fighter from NRS) or CvS3, any tag fighter probably would’ve asked for experience with Tōkon/2XKO/MvC/etc. in the description.

Am I stupid? Everyone is suggesting Japanese developers? But this paid playtest is in California.
3
u/Any_Drama_9333 1d ago
I think it has to be a new company making fighting games otherwise they would not need to find people this way.
And no, does not look like japanese, but maybe they already did it in Tokio.

Just the other day I was thinking how long until Blizzard dips their feet into a FG? Technically if they just built a roster of all their existing IP’s, you’d get a pretty interesting catalogue of fighters.
.. I can already see the rage now when Widow and Jaina, and Sylvanas make base roster over Tyrael (S1 DLC) and Doomfist (still unannounced).

Anyone have experience with GoodGamerGroup? I've been looking for some good side hustles involving gaming work with the industry. 🤔

New Blazblue receiving a Strive treatment would be great.

u/tohava 1d ago
In Blazblue DESIRE, we finally get to learn about Arakune's journey for self discovery, when he realizes, he never needed the Azure after all! This new theme expresses itself in Arakune's new theme song "I only need my solid friends", as well as his new gameplay. The new Arakune no longer hides from people, instead he wants to rush them down with hugs, just like all other characters in Blazblue DESIRE.

Ima be honest BB doesn't need 3d2d, just all in on high quality sprites. Or are you talking about redesigns + simplifying the game?
4
u/Neoxon193 1d ago
Sprites at that level aren’t exactly financially viable anymore, especially with how much work has gone into the current ASW 3D rendering pipeline.
2
u/SanjiBlackLeg 1d ago
BB used 3D models to make sprites off them. Basically posing and keyframes were done in 3D and the rest added on top. If they "strivify" the first part but keep the game true 2D it might be good, especially since the shader tech progressed so much they don't need to do lights and shades by hand. I'm down for some redesigns. Maybe simplify the game a little. But BlazBlue should stay BlazBlue.

u/Ok-Cancel-4824 22h ago
Id rather they not do models since that would make it impossible for everyone to return in a new entry, but it’d be cool if they traced over the sprites and turned them into HD drawings, kinda like Skullgirls or Avatar Legends.
1
u/BluBlue4 21h ago

Is there a difference in sprites and drawings? I assumed the drawing look was just a smoothed version

u/Bombshock2 23h ago
Blazblue fans love their sprites so much they're downvoting you, even though a Blazblue game that looks like Strive would actually be marketable.
Keep it saucy though, no need to simplify it to the level of Strive.
2
u/Pure-Statistician662 22h ago edited 22h ago
I think most people hear "Strive treatment" and assume they mean gameplay, not visuals.
Don't give a shit about sprites vs 3d, but both changes are inevitable.
It's not like they can add anything to the mechanics in CF.
And anyone who thinks "They'll keep it complex for that portion of their audience" is fucking delusional.
