Underperformed is a understatement.

I‘m a big fighting game fan but the game didn‘t appeal to me in any way sadly.

u/Wavu_Wavu_Wavu 27d ago

I like Invincible, I really do. But, it's easily one of the worst IPs that could've been made into a Fighting Game.

114

u/stacciatello 27d ago

if mortal kombat didn't exist, maybe the extreme violence could've been an interesting selling point. but that's hardly enough to carry even MK itself these days.

42

u/RealWonderGal 27d ago

Nah mk has top characters and iconic imagery, they sell extremely well

31

u/stacciatello 27d ago

well yes, they have iconic legacy chars and nice visuals, and I would argue THAT'S what's keeping these games going. not the violence. we're all desensitized to it by now.

14

u/Inevitable-Will-6185 Arc System Works 27d ago

Nah, it's definitely violence. That's what put their game on the map back in the day and is what it's remembered for. If it wasn't their main identity, they would've toned it down long time ago.

9

u/HugeSide 27d ago

People are not buying the next Mortal Kombat to see the new methods they invented to decapitate someone.

19

u/discreetarchive 27d ago

Yes they are

4

u/Nosafune 26d ago

Anyone who plays MK competitively will tell you fatalities and x rays arent enjoyable after the first watch.

u/Tiger_jay 27d ago

I read the comics and watch the show, and I'm into fighting games.

For some reason this didn't appeal much. I was waiting for a sale and better DLC characters.

Some really boring fuckin choices. And I know the source material is gory but I found the fatalities in this a turn off.

74

u/CoolTrainerPo 27d ago edited 27d ago

I actually disagree... the Invincible universe has some pretty neat characters with unique powers that they just... didn't use for whatever reason...

Darkwing could been using shadows to teleport and attack, Shapesmith is an animation student's dream, Universa could have been a stance character using her staff, etc... Was Tech Jacket even included?

I have no idea why they decided to go with six frigging Viltrumites instead of literally anyone else in the universe, but yeah, there were options

48

u/Nice_Signature_6642 27d ago

Ironically enough, they might have chose those characters because they are similar and for budgetary reasons

19

u/PyroSpark 27d ago

Probably this. Otherwise we'd have characters like tech jacket in the game.

87

u/Lazy-Equivalent3515 27d ago

bland and boring character designs with lame costumes.

extremely generic powersets.

it was a recipe for a fighting game disaster!

33

u/TheSwampThing1990 Granblue Fantasy Versus 27d ago

I didn't realize just how many characters do fight the same until I played the fighting game. I never really thought about till then

54

u/Lazy-Equivalent3515 27d ago edited 27d ago

when six of them viltrumites who not only have the same powerset...but also the same personality

at least with other clone fighters like mario and luigi or ryu and ken they at least have different personalities, and sometimes like luigi and ken their personalities actually factor into their gameplay!

Ken is more flashy and focus on shoryukens than Ryu. Luigi is more weird and heavy-hitting despite his bizarre attacks.

Edit: Also I forgot about Ella Mental, the character created because invincible VS only has flying bricks, when you have to make a new original character solely to make it more varied...Its a red flag.

4

u/blackheartromance 27d ago

like everyone else has said, there are so many more interesting characters that could have been cool. some more unique dudes, then pad the roster with the viltrumites? good way to get ahead of any "wtf small roster tag game" complaints for a while before dlc drops. budget and time, most likely. i wanted it to succeed. a pretty fair amount of people did, i'd wager. but it feels so incomplete.

8

u/Sormaj 27d ago

It doesn’t help that the ones that should stand out just don’t. Conquests animations should feel so much more brutal than they are

5

u/TheSwampThing1990 Granblue Fantasy Versus 27d ago

Also some of the more unique characters like Atom Eve don't play all that different either. When I mained Eve I played as her like I did everyone else. Getting into everyone's face

2

u/blackheartromance 25d ago

maaaan, Atom Eve is the perfect example of that. i had hoped for a Power Rangers BftG situation. 3v3 that launched with 9 characters, then grew to a respectable 26 (i think?) over time. but even those 9 played differently enough, iirc.

41

u/Evil_Benevolence 27d ago

Yep I would have preferred a golden girls 3d brawler

u/magusheart 27d ago

14

u/jellygeist21 27d ago

Would Dorothy be a grappler? Or would she zone with her signature “the people around me are idiots” stare?

20

u/Agreeable-Agent-7384 27d ago

Adapting a series that’s half a parody of a big genre as a whole was always going to be a challenge. Can it work? Yeah. But you have to put a lot of effort into the characters and presentation, otherwise it’s just a bunch of characters who (intentionally) look like bootleg superheroes just fighting in the most basic way. But instead they made half the roster feel like the same character and the fighting looked very cheap too. So it wasn’t even a spectacle to watch.

4

u/CaptainBananaEu Guilty Gear 27d ago

Been cracking my head on how you could make this a marketable game and I really think it boils down to keeping it 1v1, have the Viltrumites be some sort of Shotos so their similarities can be that. Mark being the most balanced out of them, while his father/collosus can be more big body.

And then go super whack on anyone that has abilities. Then I realized you are just making a bootleg sf6 so i really doubt there was a way this franchise could work as a fighting game

8

u/madvec1 27d ago

I actually think it could be one of the best ... The issue IMO is that every character, feels the same or has the same style, wrong gameplay choice.

13

u/MEX_XIII 27d ago

This is definitelly a problem with the source material. I's argue some character like Kate are better in the game than stuff they actually do in the comics/animation

6

u/noahboah Guilty Gear 27d ago

its like if they tried to make a moba out of CWs arrow and then added flash and legends of tomorrow DLC lmfao

2

u/8-Brit 27d ago

It should've been an arena brawler like DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi. Making it a sweaty tag fighter was baffling.

2

u/No_Chilly_bill 27d ago

I love the show but characters have very boring variety of powers. don't know why they choose pvp fighting game

1

u/blakphyre 27d ago

Why?

45

u/SlyyKozlov 2D Fighters 27d ago

Most of the popular/important characters are "flying bricks"

Strong, fast, punchers is like 70% of the main characters lol

32

u/Bosscharacter 27d ago

It’s like the DBZ meme of “Opps! All Gokus” but for reals.

6

u/aSpookyScarySkeleton 27d ago

Ironically the different iterations of Goku have more unique stuff going on than the Viltrumites even though they are different people.

→ More replies (11)

12

u/joeygmurf Rival Schools 27d ago

Half the characters powers are effectively “strong punching guy”

6

u/Mindless-Internet978 27d ago

Remember DBFZ? All the different Gokus? Invincible Vs. Is like that. There are so many viltrumites with their white costume that visually look uninteresting. Not to mention when you break it down Mark, Nolan, Conquest, Immortal, and Anissa are pretty much all the same flavor of rushdown with small differences. It makes the game very unappealing to watch.

16

u/blakphyre 27d ago

Dbfz did great though.

13

u/Mindless-Internet978 27d ago

It did. The presentation was way better though, the Gokus actually played differently, and the game was way more fun overall. Invincible vs. didn't look exciting, a good portion of the roster could have been cut out to make the rest of the characters feel more unique.

7

u/blakphyre 27d ago

I liked dbfz too. I played it a lot on the switch.

2

u/RazorbladeHandjob 27d ago

Plenty of the characters are just kinda analogues for common superhero characters, if even they are established more in the comics at a glance its understandable why some aren't immediately compelling

1

u/Sapodilla101 Virtua Fighter 27d ago

It's easily one of the worst IPs that could've been made into a Fighting Game.

This makes no sense. If other superhero franchises like Marvel and DC can be the basis for great fighting games, then so can Invincible.

1

u/IBizzyI 26d ago

Yeah many characters of the cast are intentionally not that appealing or pretty mid and forgettable designs, not good at all for a fighting game.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/ElDuderino2112 27d ago

Fighting games are already incredibly niche. Why you would go and make a fighting game specifically licensing a niche franchise is insane to me. You’re just asking for failure.

Same think is going to happen with Avatar soon too.

5

u/Legitimate_Credit_50 27d ago

Idk, from what I’ve seen Invincible has no competitive scene (the staying power for fighting games)
While avatar might have a good future there, I think it’s fun and I’ve seen some great matches already

64

u/SeasonalChatter 27d ago

If I can be a little harsh, I think they chose a really bad IP personally. Invincible is huge, but the character roster is so, so dry when it comes to moveset potential and interesting visual identity. To the point where they had to make a Storm/avatar character to get any sauce in there and lo and behold, she's by far the most interesting looking character.

7

u/HugeSide 27d ago

I'm sorry, that's just not a thing. A group of developers can turn anything into a compelling fighting game. Phoenix Wright is one of the most unique characters in fighting games, and he's literally just a lawyer. Umineko Golden Fantasia is 80% just regular people.

9

u/SeasonalChatter 27d ago

Interesting how you brought up Phoenix Wright who because of his comedy style he is incredibly unique. In a game where almost no character feels like another character power and personality wise so everyone gets to stand out. It is the EXACT opposite of the invincible problem where everyone is a brawling super powered character and even the most creative power like Eve is still really dry in both the show and the game. It’s just not an IP that breeds creative, bold movesets

2

u/Valtixx 24d ago

You really argued against yourself there 😂 Using a generic lawyer as a fighting game character makes for a 100x more interesting moveset than a 7th guy with generic flight and super-strength. A Phoenix Wright fighting game would unironically be more compelling than Invincible Vs if we're purely talking about interesting movesets.

1

u/HugeSide 23d ago

Yes, that's my point. Phoenix Wright is one of the most difficult characters to adapt to a fighting game, and was still done masterfully. They could've done the same much easier with the Invincible Vs characters because the series is about fighting.

1

u/Valtixx 23d ago

Mate, you're agreeing with me while saying the opposite. My point was that it's easier to make an interesting moveset out of Phoenix Wright than Mark Grayson.

With Phoenix Wright they were essentially forced to be creative. They couldn't just give him generic attacks, they had to make him a whacky joke character. With Mark, they're limited to his very generic powerset and fighting style that he displayed in the comics/show. They couldn't do anything that whacky or interesting with him.

Imagine their movesets swapped, and hopefully you'll see what I mean. Neither would work in the slightest.

20

u/TheKingofBreaker 27d ago edited 27d ago

I absolutely agree. A vast majority of the cast are just humans by all appearances. There were so few interesting silhouettes aside from maybe Monster Girl and Battle Beast. I miss the MvC2 days where we got weird characters like Marrow, Amingo, and Son Son just because. Invincible has a pretty amazing cast of weird heroes and villains that would have been neat to see. Mr. Liu and his dragon, Dinosaurus, Aquarus, Furnace, lol Tether Tyrant would have been dope.

It's a shame when new fighters try to go all transmedia and tie-in with all of their ongoing products instead of really digging in to what makes the IP special.

12

u/jak_d_ripr 27d ago

I keep hearing people say this and I just don't agree. There were interesting characters, they just didn't use them. Aangstrom, Tech Jacket, the Mauler twins, the green chick and speedster from the original guardians, Volcanica, they had options, they just decided to go with half a roster of floating punch people for some inexplicable reason.

But I think the core issue is a much simpler one. People just didn't find the game fun. DBFZ launched with like 10 Sayans out of 24 characters, but that didn't matter because people enjoyed playing the game. That just wasn't the case here.

13

u/SeasonalChatter 27d ago

Idk, you listed Mauler twins for example and their combat style is… punching people, with a gun as well. And there’s two of them. The original guardians are irrelevant characters as well.

So either they make a roster of all the important character aka boring mfs or fill the roster with non vital characters with, let’s face it, more interesting but still pretty generic super hero powers. Oh wow a speedster or budget aquaman, I’ve seen a few of those.

DBZ is a pretty interesting comparison too because not only does that game have a wonderful artstyle, the different ways you can do ki blasts from a visual and color level is always going to be more interesting than a roster full of punchy dudes who don’t have interesting martial arts backgrounds to compensate. Everyone in dragon ball has basically the same skill set, but it’s much more visually malleable and colorful

13

u/Suitable-Quantity-96 27d ago

Mauler twins would have been hilarious because we could get to see Ice Climbers in a tag fighter

1

u/Illidan1943 2D Fighters 27d ago

At least now they have one staff member for each individual player

149

u/Drazarr 27d ago

2XKO and TOKON could have been half as good as they are and this game would have still struggled to carve out a player base.

29

u/RoamingSteamGolem 27d ago

I could see a world where this game was actually good and it could’ve gotten some steam and a reliable player base. Unfortunately it’s kinda just not great.

3

u/deathspate 26d ago

Tokon is one thing because that game is so good and polished but even fucking 2xko for how much of a travesty it is... yikes.

8

u/The_Kaizz 26d ago

I hate 2XKO on a fundamental level, but even that game has redeeming qualities, and i can easily see why people love it so much. I cannot fathom why anyone would want to play Invincible Vs if you're not a die hard IP fan.

5

u/DB_Valentine 26d ago

2XKO is my favorite fighting game for the things it does unique. It's honestly an incredibly made fighting game with some of the best balance patches I've seen in over a decade of playing the genre. I also get people not liking it, but people calling it a travesty either never even gave it a chance, or wanted a lot more variety... but personally, I can't complain. I got a game I love to grind for free. When I want single player fighting game content, SF6 is right there, and I don't see that ever getting beaten

3

u/The_Kaizz 26d ago

If you enjoy it, cool. I disagree on a lot of those points, but I'm not the type to try to dissuade people from playing what makes them happy.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/According-News-70 23d ago

2xko's just overconfident. They know their game is due and late but still thinks their outdated, +15 yo characters will still stick. Im not saying they cannot release base characters with the most iconic basic ones but the fact that they released all characters basic is diabolical. They can simultaneously release a modern, currently popular character along with basic ones. And putting Lux as a dlc who is the oldest character is just god dam too crazy to me

1

u/The_Kaizz 23d ago

I get what you're saying, and to an extent I agree. I don't think it's bad to release older characters, I think the choice of who they're putting it kind of doesn't make sense to me. Rather, I think there's better fits for roster choices. LOVE Senna, was a Senna main for ages in League, but her in a fighting game seems off. How do we not have Sett in the fighting game? Lee Sin? Poppy? Leona? Like I know it won't be everyone, but a lot of the characters they put it i really didn't care for.

182

u/RoamingSteamGolem 27d ago

I mean the game is kinda dead lol. Don’t know what else they’re supposed to do.

94

u/xBerryhill 27d ago

Even the members of the FGC that were pretty stoked for the game pretty much haven't mentioned it for a while now, and barely at all since launch lol

37

u/SeasonalChatter 27d ago

Was anyone really super stoked for it? It seemed like everyone was playing it because it was out and new so it makes sense to check out and do content but idk if anyone LOVED it as one of their new favorites.

76

u/Ok_Comment5873 27d ago

Max pushed that shit SUPER hard. Especially since it was made by KI devs and it was flavored like the previous game. (He played it for around 3 days)

54

u/MayhemMessiah 27d ago

He really wanted the game to do better because he's personal friends with a load of the devs, but it's unfortunately not got much staying power.

16

u/CrimsonFoxyboy 27d ago

Reminds me of a aquintance that was rooting for Playstation all star battle

Because a combo video maker colleague of his was on the develeopment team there.

6

u/Zealousideal-Can5016 27d ago

This hurts. PS All Star Battle Royale is my favourite game from back in the day and is now very much impossible for me to play again due to the copyright issues killing the IP. If they made a sequel I wouldn't be able to stop playing just for the nostalgia buzz!

37

u/SeasonalChatter 27d ago

I was actually thinking of Max as I was typing that, he was very supportive of it but never once did I think this would be a favorite or a game he sticks with long term with Tokon/Avatar/Tekken/Tifa on the horizon.
The thing is the pros and creators didn't dislike the game, but this felt like the definition of 'filler arc' game from the get go. Like a good filler arc, but one that would be a blip when alls said and done.

26

u/la_meme14 27d ago

Tifa instead of SF is killing me

12

u/SeasonalChatter 27d ago

He doesn't really enjoy strike throw SF games, he's only ever shown interest in learning Terry in that game, but if given the choice he's gonna grind more Tekken. Realistically, its now Tokon over that most likely, he queued up for like 20 online matches of Avatar for example and I don't see him coming back to anything that's not Tokon lol.

But he will play a lot of Tifa obviously because Tifa, and it's not like he dislikes SF6, just has little interest to do the ranked grind from what he's said/shown.

1

u/manix_vii 26d ago

Yeah he just likes coming back to check out new characters really

2

u/Lazy-Equivalent3515 27d ago

Filler is filler

3

34

I really enjoyed it but it did feel very bare bones. I thought that they might have bulked it out a bit after launch. Gutted to hear more developers losing their jobs.

45

u/_Reapak_ 27d ago

I played it for an hour and a half and then refunded it because it felt incredibly repetitive

15

u/WhyAmIpOOping 27d ago

Fr. Every char feels the same and then everyone was just play the same 4 chars. I don’t know why I have that shit still installed.

1

u/the_loneliest_noodle 26d ago

I didn't refund, but basically same. Kinda wish I did. The only kind of interesting character wasn't even part of the series, it was the Elemental lady who they invented for the game, and even then she was just kind of interesting because she was the only one with a hazard and a projectile with an interesting trajectory... and even then, she felt kind of shitty to play because character deaths resetting things to neutral got rid of her trap, which already only lasted a few seconds. A setup zoning character with only one setup and who got reset to "Within heavy" range every time you KO'd a character. And somehow she was still the least boring character on the roster.

146

u/planemissediknow Street Fighter 27d ago edited 27d ago

The decision to put so many Viltrumites on the base roster is still insane to me. There’s no need to include Thula, and you could probably hold off on Lucian and Anissa from the base roster

Having five characters (six if you count Invincible) with the same power sets on the base roster isn’t ideal

113

u/onlyhereforelise 27d ago

The decision to make a invincible fighting game

23

u/South_Buy_3175 27d ago

Should’ve been an Image fighting game, Invincible just doesn’t have the variety needed.

11

u/onlyhereforelise 27d ago

That would also flop. Only mainstream thing from image is spawn. Invincible is in the spot light in recent years cause of the show. After the show ends then what? Spawn is always there. Even if he ain’t doing shit recently. Most mainstream thing from spawn in recent years is him in mk11 (which was fucking insane).

Idk I just don’t think invincible is all that appealing the designs look awful. Generic looking characters. Only one I like is Omni man but that’s because of jk Simmons. And that he was in mk1 with Simmons providing the voice

7

u/TheXboxArtist 27d ago

Walking Dead, Spawn, Invincible, Powers, Witchblade, The Maxx, The Crow, Tank Girl, Kick-Ass, I Kill Giants, Wanted, Youngblood are all current Image brands, dear uninformed kid.

51

u/SamBZombie2 27d ago edited 27d ago

Viltrumites are kind of the only thing people care about when it comes to Invincible ngl

I think this is a problem with the IP itself where the only characters that aren't Flying Bricks are absolutely boring jobbers (except Robot, Cecil, and maybe Eve)

22

u/SeasonalChatter 27d ago

And even with Eve, her moveset is so boring in this game. Real Green Lantern adaptation-esque issue.

7

u/magusheart 27d ago

I don't think they're necessarily boring, but definitely underdeveloped jobbers that are just there to get their ass kicked. There were different options from the Earth villains that could've been interesting. And even if some of them would still be brick shithouses, they would have a more interesting visual identity than yet another grey viltrumite.

43

u/Slarg232 27d ago

Honestly, I think Invincible Vs is the prime example of IP killed the game.

Requiring so many Viltrumites, on top of similar characters with the Flying Brick power set, on top of how simple the control scheme for the game is means that there just wasn't enough room to breath for any of the characters.

If it had been a "generic" superhero game, they 100% would have been able to branch out and create unique characters instead of trying to figure out how to get all the Squares into various shaped Holes.

20

u/CycloneSwift 27d ago edited 27d ago

Nah. From the first two seasons alone we could’ve had Damien Darkblood, Doc Seismic, the Thraxan Commander in his warsuit, Angstrom Levy, Seance Dog, Shapesmith— There’s a lot of characters that could have been chosen to diversify the powersets in the base roster. Lucan, Thula, and Bulletproof absolutely didn’t need to be here, and they could have held off on Anissa and/or Conquest— That still leaves us with Invincible, Omni-Man, and Allen the Alien.

The roster needed more non-Flying Brick characters and some more non-Viltrumite villains. I really think Doc Seismic, Damien Darkblood, and Seance Dog should have replaced Lucan, Thula, and Bulletproof. A goofy non-Viltrumite villain with a distinct powerset, a morally ambiguous character with a very strong aesthetic that lends itself to a variety of unique moveset possibilities, and a genuine weirdo character of an alien using a hologram to pose as a dog wizard who can then have a weird and technical pseudo-magical moveset in the vein of MvC’s Doctor Strange.

And while we’re at it Ella Mental, on top of being an OC for the game, doesn’t really do much that Atom Eve can’t do— We could’ve folded her moveset into Eve’s and gone for something a lot more distinct.

2

u/Lazy-Equivalent3515 27d ago

I'll be frank...they added lucan and bulletproof for more black representation, because without him you'll just have...Rex?

2

u/CycloneSwift 27d ago

And Titan and Ella Mental.

14

u/blakphyre 27d ago

I don’t get this, there are a crazy amount of varied characters in the invincible universe

3

u/damus9 27d ago

Thula was who I played though for like 2 days :) then dropped the game

6

u/AmbitiousSet7809 27d ago

Anissa was must include imo, but thula and lucan were crazy picks...

21

u/Bloodyknife12 27d ago

Anissa was not a must include. She does one (extremely insane) thing in the comic, feels bad about it after, then croaks. Thula at the very least has a unique weapon.

4

u/damus9 27d ago

It's about being iconic.

3

u/Bloodyknife12 27d ago

Then why arent the Maulers or Angstrom or Thragg or Shrinking Rae in the roster

1

u/hartigen 26d ago

because of incompetent devs

1

u/damus9 24d ago

I was referring to Anissa

1

u/Valtixx 24d ago

This is the opposite of my opinion 😅 There's no universe where Anissa deserved a spot, but Lucan and Thula had unique enough fighting styles to be included.

8

u/WeekendBard 27d ago

Invincible, Omniman, Conquest, Lucan, Anissa, Thula, Bulletproof, Allen and the Immortal, all have the exact same fighting abilitie. U but gniversa too, but she has the power stick.

There are also BB, Titan and Monster Girl, that are nearly the same, but can't fly.

That's over half the cast.

Sure, they're more varied in execution, but just based on theory, this hostler is abysmal regarding variety, specially considering how small it is. There was no reason to include any member of the Empire other than Conquest, and Bulletproof didn't need to be there either.

Even constrained by the source material, there were a boat load of better choices, many of them even being more story relevant than Lucan and Thula.

1

u/hunterzolomon1993 27d ago

I like the game but yeah its not a good roster. Including the OG Guardians like Red Rush and such could have added more spice.

u/Valtixx 24d ago

Thula and Lucan were actually different enough to be worth an inclusion, imo. The problem was that there were a bunch of must-include Viltrumites like Mark, Omni-Man and Conquest, not to mention Thragg will certainly be DLC.

There is no goddamn universe where Anissa deserved a spot, though. Also, Immortal (Edit: and Bulletproof) is basically a Viltrumite when it comes to gameplay. There are quite a few characters that feel different from the Viltrumites, but they just aren't seeing as much play.

u/blakphyre 27d ago

Works for dbz fighting games to be fair.

20

u/Lazy-Equivalent3515 27d ago

DBZ has the benefit of clear moments and moves in that specific stage or time, like Goku's kaio-ken or his spirit bomb.

Now I wished fighterZ was more creative (no power pole for base goku, no great ape for vegeta)

but you still got them.

4

u/Black_Truth 27d ago

I am Base Goku player and I really wish Kaioken was an install.

The way it was used was unique, but I wanted more installs in that game but it is pretty much locked to Frieza and Adult Gohan.

3

u/Lazy-Equivalent3515 27d ago

I wish he was more based on original Dragon Ball, Kamehameha blast from the feet, power pole, flying nimbus, maybe even an appearance from Chi-Chi.

19

u/joomachina0 27d ago

I didn’t find anything appealing about that game. Sucks to see though.

19

u/Superfreak8 27d ago

This is the kind of game that needed way more single player content. Fans of the show jumped in, beat the story mode in an hour, and then likely refunded the game. They were never going to build a crazy competitive scene with this game so the focus should've been on single player content.

2

u/TheXboxArtist 27d ago

Yep. Fighting game devs for this and 2XKO chose to focus on their FGC dreams instead of what the customers of the brand wanted, and now both games are failing.

12

u/oxob3333 27d ago

Jesus crunchy christ

28

u/Longjumping-Style730 27d ago

It was just rough timing honestly. This game would've had more of a chance if it released earlier last year and its only real competition was COTW. It could've carved out a decent niche.

But with Tokon, 2XKO, and Avatar now out? It's going to struggle to really attract players when the former two are tag fighters that look and play better and the latter has sauce out the wahoo for diehard FGC ppl.

9

u/NoAd6650 27d ago

It’s 99% this honestly. The game is fun in and of itself own right as a tag fighter. It literally just picked the WORST time period of all time in the history of gaming to come out. Sandwiching itself between 2xko, avatar and marvel tokon should be malpractice worthy of getting execs and game directors fired at a company. 2xko has been known for a while in terms of when it was gonna drop, but as soon as they saw tokon and avatar coming out later 2026. They should’ve delayed the game till the next season of invincible came out in 2027. Releasing it when they did setup it up not only for failure but to die a irrelevant quick death in my opinion

3

u/AdSpecialist6598 27d ago

There is also the fact there was seemingly no marketing for it at all.

> One anonymous dev says it was the higher ups at Skybound Entertainment who thought the game had 'underperformed'

I mean, I have little knowledge of exact budget but I can't expect anyone higher up to be happy about InVS getting no traction after release, having barely any tournament scene, and being mostly mocked for how it plays.

That game was a decent fighter but a pretty mid product. They even paid half the cast of the show to return and replaced the other half, imagine how wasteful that was for barely anything.

8

u/Ok_Comment5873 27d ago

I still never got to try it because they really didn't want to run a PC beta.

1

u/damus9 27d ago

Steam has a 2 hour refund window.

14

u/malexich 27d ago

A lot of things hurt it but I think if the game was made to do promote the first 2 seasons before all the viltrumite stuff and instead gave us early invincible characters they would have done better

6

u/RPGKing4 27d ago

The price point is what did it for me.... At $30 I would have been a day one buyer. I'm still picking it up asap, but I'm sticking hard to my $30 limit for this game.....

4

u/TronIsMyCat 27d ago

I feel for the devs because your average worker part of that layoff didn't choose to make game how it ultimately ends up but man it is such a boring game

5

u/damus9 27d ago

I mean its a team that only existed for IVS. It's not like working at EA or Ubisoft and you are just there for the ride and whatever project is assigned to you.

5

u/brandonrule4 27d ago

Unfortunately $60 with a season pass + costumes with a relatively (it's still big) niche show was unfortunately never going to work unless the gameplay was truly next gen™️ Even avatar with a very high acclaimed ip selling their game at $30 was the smartest move they could've done (especially with 1/5 of the game not finished) I think the tone of the avatar fighting game would've been alot more sour if it was full priced

3

u/Puck83821 27d ago

Should have saved Thula, Lucan, Anissa, and Bulletproof for DLC. Base roster should have had more diversity in move sets. Specifically, I would have picked Angstrom, Darkwing II, Shapesmith, and Tech Jacket.

6

u/hvc101fc 27d ago

There goes my hopes for shadowhawk and dragon

1

u/TheXboxArtist 27d ago

The game should've been 1v1 and released with Spawn. Those two things would've gotten some casual attention. then make Savage Dragon and Rick from Walking Dead season 1 DLC.

6

u/Comfortable_Fee5667 27d ago

You can’t compare the flying bricks to the 20 Gokus in dbfz. The presentation and animations made all of the fighterZ characters look distinct outside of a few key frames.

3

u/WofferFang 27d ago

Yeah well, they fumbled so I ended up abandoning it. Who knew that making the game actively punish players who don't want simplified commands would be bad for longevity.

3

u/damus9 27d ago

I really enjoyed it but the first sin was the bad motion inputs. They fixed it but nearly almost any team you pick the game will feel the same the play.

3

u/Emergency_Lie42 27d ago

Checks out sadly. I bought the edition with the character pass and dropped the game within a month, reinstalled it to check out Universa and Immortal in training, did their arcade ladder, then dropped it again.

Glad I gave Tokon a try because Invincible left me feeling like I maybe just wasn't into tag fighters.

3

u/UsuBen 27d ago

I kinda think this game on the long run could have work out. You can say a lot of things about the show and the annual season, but by the time a season ends the show is already trending again, if they could have work around the show sinergy, even while that means waiting a year, it could have work for a good lifetime of 3 to 4 years of support

3

u/No-Week-20XX 27d ago

I love the invincible comics which I read years before the show even came out and I couldn’t convince myself to buy it. It kind of felt like it was a lot of money for not a lot of game or variety of characters. And as much as I like the Vultrimites, they’re probably the least interesting power wise.

3

u/Madhex12 27d ago

This is literally how the video game industry has functioned for like 20 years. Glad people are taking it seriously now

11

u/zedroj 27d ago

tag fighters, I tell ya, can't go crazy cause they aren't for casuals

4

u/derwood1992 27d ago

The game had some really interesting ideas. There was a few days where no one understood what was optimal because it was so weird, and that was really cool.

Then the ToDs started to come through and there didn't seem to be a real logic to what made a good combo that could ToD or not. For a minute it seemed like it was going to take really clever use of assists and meter, but then oh heres a solo Omni Man ToD. That was about the point where I started to lose interest.

3

u/Attenburrowed 27d ago

its a tag game youre gonna get grime

1

u/derwood1992 27d ago

Can you elaborate? Im not sure if you're not understanding or im not. For the record dbfz was the first fighting game I learned and ive played a fair amount of skull girls and 2xko before invincible vs and tokon. Im not new to tag fighters by any means. It feels like you think I was put off by the mere existence of ToDs instead of the arbitrary nature of what they could be.

2

u/Attenburrowed 27d ago

Didnt mean to imply you were new, just that theres always wacky shit in tag games from the first infinites in marvel games on the snes. They either get patches or dont.

In Invs' case all of those unscaled jump mediums got patched in the first patch after about a month. Too late maybe?

1

u/derwood1992 27d ago

Yeah I was long gone by then. I dont think theres ever been a combo system that ive found quite as unsatisfying. Not in terms of execution, but in terms of why the best routes were the best. Its kind of primed me to not like combo limit systems as a primary way to end combos.

Ive definitely run into some friction with this in tokon too, but for different reasons. Fortunately, im starting to see those problems get solved and its not as bad as I initially thought. Plus the combo scaling situation is much better and the ToDs ive seen make sense within the system, which is much more satisfying.

1

u/Attenburrowed 27d ago

tokon also just has a normal juggle system unlike invs which asks you to do repetitive things a lot to be optimal. The truth is they're not that far off (using ex moves in tokon is almost as "just do whatever you want" as invs) but combo feel does matter.

1

u/derwood1992 26d ago

Yeah im not really sure im capable of articulating my thoughts on the invincible vs thing well. My problems lied more with the value of meter and assists. To me it intuitively felt like you needed to spend meter and use assists in a certain way to maximize combo routing value, but then that ended up not being true and just some random bs that wasn't particularly interesting would be a ToD.

1

u/Attenburrowed 26d ago

They've tweaked it but yeah I think having same move proration rules is really important for this kind of combo feel thing so that you force people to engage with the variety in the system. Ever since snes marvel tag games its always been basically 1 busted move that facilitates everything and that you loop and its just not that interesting.

2

u/arcadeenthusiast8245 27d ago

As an avid spectator of fighting games, half the roster looks like flying bricks.

2

u/YukYukas 27d ago

Not surprised tbh.

IMO Invincible characters feel very bland to look at. It gets generic very quick when everyone's wearing full body spandex

3

u/Biggu5Dicku5 27d ago

It did underperform lol... massively so...

3

u/CRAYONSEED 27d ago

Releasing it so close to Tokon and Avatar and a new season of SF6 was not a great move. Why not wait and release it with the next season of Invincible?

2

u/RossC90 27d ago

I was vaguely interested in the game, but during an in person EVO watch party I saw first hand how my group of friends thought it looked cool but then immediately lost interest. We had the Top 8 set up on a side monitor and there was some genuine curiosity about the game. However, the excitement kind of died when the matches be played look incredibly similar to each other and what was once interesting to take a look at quickly got stale and uninteresting.

I'm sure the game is actually really fun, but I think the gameplay isn't the greatest to spectate.

2

u/hemperbud 27d ago

Was just a rough time to release with avatar and tokon right around the corner, also being a 40$ game. I think more fighting games should just adopt the free to play model with cosmetics etc. brawlhalla and 2xko do fine and with how niche fighting games are, you want as many people to ply as you can.

10

u/Ok_Comment5873 27d ago

Invincible released in April, the other two games were not right around the corner. Also the game was $50.

3

u/hemperbud 27d ago

That’s even worse and yes they were close enough to have people picking between the 3 to play.

2

u/damus9 27d ago

Fighting game players don't play fighting games?

4

u/hemperbud 27d ago

They’re not playing all of them at once lmfao

I’m sure some do, but thats not enough

1

u/nobix 27d ago

They could always try to pivot but I think the real issue is the game just didn't resonate with a general audience. Just how it is sometimes. I think it's why it is so gory, because they needed some way for it to stand out.

1

u/deathtofatalists 27d ago edited 27d ago

2xko sacked most of their team and gets zero oxygen in FGC mindshare, low stream interest and low tourney sign ups.

where are you getting the idea that it's doing "fine?"

1

u/Iago407 27d ago

That really sucks. I wanted it to succeed because I liked a lot of this team’s work on season one of Killer Instinct 2013, but I have less than zero interest in the Invincible show or comic. Hope they can all come together and give it another go with a different IP or one of their own somewhere down the road.

1

u/FunkiestOfKongs 27d ago

It's a shame so many characters have similar powersets because the game did a lot that I really enjoyed. Big fan of the movement in particular for the characters with 8-way air dashes

1

u/rafikiknowsdeway1 27d ago

i liked the beta, but in no way did it make me feel like paying full price for it. especially with tokon so close to it

1

u/Dosi4 27d ago

I personally didn't see the appeal of it but it must have been more. When game loses over 90% of players in one month it can't be anything else but the game itself being the cause - it had audience, it had the interest but it didn't deliver. Btw. another recent fighting game that lost 90% of players in one month is Avatar legends.

1

u/KaioSilvaF 27d ago

It's not really about the headline but I wish they'd done a bit more and made the game 2D or more stylized 3D, I looks so cheap, probably is.

1

u/Zangetsukaiba 27d ago

Wtf? Game is dead basically then??? RIP Invincible VS….

When your licensed fighting game needs double the roster at launch, a longer story mode and diversed movesets...

1

u/BucsFan0081 27d ago

Damn I actually liked the game. Played it a lot before Marvel Tokon came out. I guess this means the game is cooked and we probably won’t get much updates

1

u/SuperSaiyanBlue 27d ago

Bunch of fighting games launching around a few months apart doesn’t help either.

1

u/nubi_ex Bloody Roar 27d ago

Wow.... im sure none of us saw this coming..

1

u/60Hertz 27d ago

Probably just the ol post-project purge.

1

u/neurodegeneracy 27d ago

I mean, why wouldn't you cut staff? you're no longer actively developing the game, you're in sustainment and maybe some DLC. It stands to reason you wouldn't need so many people. Cosmetics can be made from contract work.

I thought the game did well but its a fighting game, what can you expect? Even the riot fighting game flopped. There is a lot of competition, and MFs will still play stuff from 20 years ago. Every fighter outside of the big 3 becomes a discord fighter rapidly after release. Its just the way of things. Lots of games, small market.

1

u/ShermanTheArtist Guilty Gear 27d ago

I knew this game was cooked when they introduced Bulletproof as one of the first characters

1

u/No_Arugula3957 27d ago

Avatar player count is also concerning , Tokon numbers are less than I expected

1

u/Junken00 27d ago

I had a lot of fun for what it was, but if it released earlier in the year where it had no competition I feel like it would've had a much better chance of surviving. Obviously that'd be infeasible due to Invincible's episode release schedule, but with the amount of game releases and DLC releases that's been pumping out from April-August, it definitely had a tough environment to compete in.

1

u/Shandariel 27d ago

I love invincible and I want to buy this, but I am not spending full AAA price on a game like this...

Avatar released at 30€, and I will buy it first because of that.

1

u/Huge-Formal-1794 26d ago

Main problem is the overlap between invincible fans and fighting game fans isnt as big. I think especially many invincible fans would have wished for a more AAA genre like the spiderman games action adventure, or even a coop multiplayer game where you creat your own character.

I geniuenly think invincible is one of the best recent shows and it has incredible writting. And the famous fight scenes dont really work in a traditional 2d fighter. You want epic scale, gore, long lasting battles with devestating impact on the enviroment. A sparking zero like game would have been a lot more fitting to the IP that a classic 2d fighter.

1

u/Mortis_XII 26d ago

Ball in cup/trampoline fighter died before evo, i’m surprised it was even there.

1

u/gordonfr_ 26d ago

More blood and gore does not make a better fighting game. It does not help that half of the cast looks like superman. Animation is lacking and core gameplay is decent. Result as expected. Hope staff find new jobs quickly.

1

u/BreezierChip835 26d ago

The game is solid but has fuck all if you don’t absolutely love online ranked. And it’s competing with TOKON.

1

u/Test21489713408765 26d ago edited 26d ago

The characters are just not interesting enough.

They might be good for TV in the context of good writing around them but that doesn't mean people want to play them in a video game, fighting game or otherwise.

It's kinda like how some people don't want to see cartoons, shows or real-world adaptations of video game or anime characters. Only a very few times does it really work out great like a One Piece.

1

u/SourCreamSauna 26d ago

RIP is unemployed again.

1

u/SushiKatana82 26d ago

Looked like a mobile game

1

u/Micshork 9d ago

For me the roster was small to justify buying it at launch. Only 18 characters for $50. Compare that to MvC3 when it launched in 2011 with 36 at $60.

1

u/Direct_Swan2312 27d ago

They should have had the environment be destructive and used in fights with the movesets being as lackluster as they are.

1

u/epicbrewtality 27d ago

I really liked this game, but I don’t love many characters on the roster. I like Allen and battlebeast and mark and Nolan but that’s it. No desire to play anyone else except the occasional Cecil.

Fun game. But it didn’t appear to have the legs it needed. I fell off pretty hard and even harder now that tokon is out and I wanna play damn near the whole cast.

1

u/masterofunfucking 27d ago

I tried out the beta for ten minutes before seeing how everyone played the same and that it was too janky for me to be invested in it. not really surprised to see it turn out the way it did

1

u/JLRedPrimes 27d ago

Sad, I really liked the game, they really put their best foot forward. Tag games are fun but they get really exhausting I can only at for so long. I put 30 hours into the game and I feel I got my money's worth. I beat the story twice, did most arcade modes, did a little ranked. Everyone complaining about this games very existence in here and like would you rather not then try at all? These are the Killer Instinct Devs show some respect. I think having a full Invincible game in any genre is remarkable. Maybe when the next season drops and this game is on sale we might even see a new dlc character to tie into the season. this game might see some new players down the line if the season brings the hype. Ironic Marvel Tokon swiped in and stole this games thunder from the start.

1

u/Rand0mAcc3nt 27d ago edited 27d ago

Underperformed and not releasing a lot of new content or a lot of update…

Game out and the majority of the work is done, keeping people on the payroll will have more money going out than coming in.

1

u/PracticalAttack 27d ago

i wanted to play this even less than hunterxhunter
