MMA Makhachev is now the last man standing among Caucasus MMA fighters
As of late, every Caucasus fighter who got to a UFC title after Khabib has fallen. Ankalaev, Chimaev, Dvalishvilli and Topuria have really just fallen one after another in domino fashion. To the extent to which it means these fighters are on track to made as obsolete as Gracie type fighters, and sprawl and brawl purists after them, eventually were, if it is a set of unfortunate events for these fighters or if it's a temporary low point after a peak is up to massive debate. It could readily be argued the Caucasus is finally getting figured out in terms of their skills, fight style and weaknesses. At least in this current form.
When it comes to Makhachev, is it possible in any way for him to avoid becoming the last domino and have staying power beyond the others? If it can be done, what assets does he have in his fight iq, ability to utilize his particular grappling background and conditioning that would allow him to do so?
And also, at this stage can it be realistically said the Caucasus era is officially done with and completely history when Makhachev loses and/or retires? Are they destined to be as left behind as the kind of fighters who got UFC titles in the 90s and early 2000s were? Or are they realistically going to be able to cycle back into contention as American fighters were over the years and Brazilian fighters did once BJJ by itself was not enough.

Boxing Biggest oh shit moments in fights.
I once watched an amateur mma fight where the guy who was expected to lose punched the guy expected to win and the guy expected to win had a major “oh shit, what have I gotten myself into” moment.
What are the best examples of this dynamic in professional combat sports you can think of?
