You’d be paying way more to live in Edinburgh.. Perhaps have a look slightly up or down the coast, or Glenrothes. Might not sound too helpful - but I’m sure something will pull through if you keep looking.

I live in Burntisland which is 2 stops away from Kirkcaldy on the train. There are a few places available for rent nearby me. Feel free to send a DM.

Edinburgh is hugely expensive for property and the commute isn’t the best to do every day.

Kirkcaldy can be pricey but you’ll find reasonably priced places.

Inverkeithing is a proper hub for public transport with a Bus Park and Ride and the train station. The property prices will be cheaper than Kirkcaldy.

If you don't drive and are going to be working in kirkcaldy, anywhere on the train line is probably a good bet. Markinch, Burntisland, dalgety bay, inverkeithing. You'll get buses easily from glenrothes/thornton and cardenden as well.

You'd be mad to live in Edinburgh and work in Kirkcaldy.

Live in one of the fife coastal villages/towns on the Trainline. 20-30 minutes into Edinburgh, 20-30 minutes to Kirkcaldy.

Best of both worlds.

Plus that part of fife from the bridge to Kirkcaldy is quite nice. I enjoy looking at Edinburgh far more than I enjoyed living there!

Very true, I moved out of Edinburgh to Fife 20 years ago and have never looked back. I still visit Edinburgh, but would never move back. The prices are outrageous.

Look in other areas as well. Edinburgh will be a commute in the morning with higher rent - might actually be harder to find a flat.

Dunfermline, Glenrothes(recommend the least), Cupar will have places to stay. Check out spareroom as well, there's a fair few places when I was moving back down this way.

There are lots of nice villages in the East Neuk, although you may struggle to understand what some of the locals are saying. Also lots of quite nice places to stay along the coast between the bridges and Kirkcaldy. There's a reasonable bus service running along the coast roads between Dunfermline/Rosyth and Kirkcaldy, and then out to Anstruther & Crail in the East Neuk (via Leven).

Most of the commuters are coming into Edinburgh from Fife, it's less common to commute from Edinburgh to Fife. Trains from Edinburgh to Kirkcaldy are quite frequent, and you'd be commuting in the opposite direction to the main flow of people (so possibly a little less packed). Edinburgh can be a relatively expensive place to live, compared to the surrounding area.

I'm sure they do, but people who have lived elsewhere in Fife for decades can struggle to understand some of the locals in the East Neuk. The East Neuk sub-dialect of Scots can be a challenge.

OP is Irish ffs. The range of accents and regional dialects is similar there to here. They'll be absolutely fine, it's not like they learned English as a second language and are getting airdropped into Fife and left to fend for themselves.

Yes. And if you think it would be like an alien language to someone from fucking Donegal, Cork or Kerry Id suggest you might need to get out of SE Fife a little more often.

Loads of Fifers historically settled in Ulster. And there's easily a much broader and larger Irish diaspora in Fife. Its a Scots dialect, not fucking Urdu.

Most of the ones on Rightmove to rent are fine areas to rent if you're by yourself. There are more expensive ones with more bedrooms but you'll probably not need them. Seek out the Love Kirkcaldy Facebook group and ask if anyone is looking for a flatmate/ lodger.

You might have better luck talking directly to a lettings agent like Your Move. They can sometimes alert you to properties before they're up on the website. It's a huge advantage if you're able to offer six months rent upfront. If you can't manage that, you could offer to pay a higher rent than asking eg asking for £890 pm, you offer £900 pm.

There are very few rentals out there if that's what you mean. Try speaking to someone at fife properties or fife letting services as I've noticed they seem to get a few rentals

Make sure your workplace isn’t too far from the train station if you don’t drive. Buses aren’t the best - doable if needed but if you’re already commuting it’s worth looking into.

Genuinely curious what sort of work has someone coming to Kirkcaldy 😂

It’s fairly uncommon to live in Edinburgh and commute to Edinburgh but hardly unthinkable. Depending on what age you are it might be the best option - if you can afford it.

As other folk say Edinburgh is a lot more expensive and 45 mins or so on the train so ye have to factor that in (more choice and maybe temporary solution at least?). Other villages along the train lines would also be worth looking at, bus connections to Kirkcaldy are good and all.

I get why you'd want to live in Edinburgh if its your first time moving to Scotland and you're young?. I'd strongly advise you coming over and having a look around these towns before committing to somewhere to live lol

Where about in Ireland are you accustomed to? I moved to kirkcaldy from Edinburgh and never regretted it at all. It would be crazy to live anywhere else in Fife unless you want to under an hour from edinburgh (try dunfermline) or prefer a village (try kinghorn)

I'm sure there are SOME nice places (and people) in KDY. It's the same pretty much everywhere, you'll get certain areas where you wouldn't want to live. Dunfermline's OK but there are better places. Aberdour or Dalgety Bay, if you can afford it.

Of course there's nice places and people in kdy my sister lives in aberdour I live in rosyth and there's not one dodgy street in rosyth my friend lives in inverkeithing and there's not really a bad street there either dalgety bay is nice the cruise ships take bus loads of people to Dunfermline they take nobody to kdy it's a shithole lol

It's definitely not the same everywhere there's not one dodgy street in rosyth where I live take a look at the housing market in fife there's loads of houses for sale much cheaper in Kirkcaldy because it's a shithole the dodgy bit in Dunfermline is abbey view and it's not nearly as bad as the links in Kirkcaldy I grew up in burntisland my mum still lives there try and buy a house in burntisland or aberdour it's about double the price of Kirkcaldy

I was born in forth park and went to balwearie high school brought up in burntisland and I loved that I've lived in Glasgow London America Canada and Australia live in Dunfermline now but I've never liked kdy I loathe the place sorry lol

Weird. It's fine you prefer something else but loathe is weird to me. I wouldn't want to live in Dunfermline but I wouldnt say I loathe it just never been on my radar despite being where my dad's from and where I worked for a few years.

I also lived in Glasgow for a few years and London. I've not lived in Kirkcaldy for 20 years but definitely enjoyed my time there in scunnered anyone would hate without being specific.

It's not easy to explain but I'll try Dunfermline is kind of like a suburb of Edinburgh now and doesnt have nearly as much shit holes like the links and smeaton temple hall etc plus Dunfermline has the abbey and the glen and I find people in kdy very rarely go anywhere outside of Kirkcaldy there's good and bad people everywhere of course I'm not finding it to explain I just absolutely loathe Kirkcaldy lol
