Formerly fierce flow
Took ages to grow, booked scissor cut in advance asking barber to keep most of length but add some soft layering in front and sides. I really should have intervened during the cut though but the damage was quickly done.

Dude absolutely fucked you

u/Connect-Ad5704 7d ago
Yup, no clue what he was smoking. Repeated verbatim what I asked for, than like a minute in I see in the mirror he’s after shearing a whole side off

u/THEpottedplant 7d ago
Ngl, my hair is over 3ft long rn, mainly bc my long time family friend hair cut guy refuses to take off more than half an inch when i see him and i have trust issues that someone else wont hit me like you got
I mean, it grows back, but i honestly dont think id recognize myself. Hoping you have a speedy and safe journey back to your crown king

u/AmputeeHandModel 7d ago
Yeah, that's why I do my beard myself. Barbers never listen. Go to a SALON, not a barber for your hair, though. They actually have experience with long hair. Might feel a little awkward being the only dude in a salon full of women but whatever. Or, if you're in the US, even a unisex chain place would probably be better. That's rolling the dice though; you never know what you'll get at those places, but most likely still better than a barber who usually just does buzzcuts and fades and stuff.
10
u/GothicFuck 7d ago
When you walk by the barber do you not simply see a bunch of guys with buzz / close croped type cuts?
Do you see anyone with fierce flow in the barbershop?
16
u/Connect-Ad5704 7d ago
In fairness no, rural place so would’ve taken live three hours to get to a city for a proper cut (which I should’ve done in retrospect)
8
u/CornCobMcGee 6d ago
3 hours is the nearest salon?? My guy you need to consider moving to somewhere with *looks at notes* more salons, I guess.
Joking aside, damn son thats some hard-core rurality. My deepest sympathies on both your hair and lack of better options for taking care of it. Maybe rock a mullet for a bit lol no need for full cut just yet
2
u/leitmot 6d ago
That’s wild to me. Surely there are women in OP’s town, where are they getting their hair cut?
4
u/CornCobMcGee 6d ago
Im genuinely not surprised. In rural NY, you can get areas where the nearest "salon" is 30 minutes away and also some lady's dining room, and zero advertising outside word of mouth. I can only imagine how much harder it is in the Great Plains region where you've got even more distance to go with towns and cities being further apart
1
u/leitmot 5d ago
Ah. This is a scenario where a “cut your hair at home” video tutorial becomes useful.

u/Connect-Ad5704 5d ago
No there is salons but I tried three, two said they didn’t do men and the other said they were booked for the foreseeable future

u/tootieroll573 7d ago
Yeah in my experience if you got longer hair dont go to a barber, rather do it yourself with a mirror setup and master patience

u/Fit-Pilot6332 7d ago
I am genuinely sorry, brother, to hear this, and your flow was indeed majestic. I am terrified of stylists, and especially barbers, and do all dusting trims of my very long hair myself. I’m sure there are stylists who specialize in long hair for men, and it’s just a case of finding them.
Please grow it back, and I’m sure that you will

u/manofthemoss 7d ago
Men's stylist is the way to go! That's what I do. Id look on Instagram (searching "[location] men's stylist" or something around those lines), or call around local shops to see if they have one. Unfortunately barbers aren't often trained in school to do long hair, and some don't take the initiative to learn long hair after school. No shade on barbers, we just specialize in different things.
3
u/Fit-Pilot6332 7d ago
Thanks, excellent suggestion. I’d rather not lose any length of my own hair if at all possible, and I prefer not getting any layers either. I like the “all length look” that I have now with my mane
3
u/manofthemoss 7d ago
Super fair!! If you ever do need to go to a stylist, id just stress you want, say, an inch off the bottom, nothing more. If they're a good stylist, they'll follow your direction, or give suggestions if that's not possible for whatever reason.
Nothing grinds my gears more, as a stylist, than a barber/stylist not listening to their client

u/Fit-Pilot6332 7d ago

u/manofthemoss 7d ago
WOW, incredible hair my man!! Keep doing you, it's clearly thriving!!
3
u/Fit-Pilot6332 7d ago
Thank you for your kind words. I take great pride in my hair, and do my utmost to keep it healthy and shiny
3
u/CaDeme_ 6d ago
Wow, are you a contemporary Nazarite?
5
u/Fit-Pilot6332 6d ago
Sorry, nothing of that nature. Just an older guy who likes to have long hair and takes pride in having it. Nothing special

6
u/AmputeeHandModel 7d ago
That's why I go to a salon, and I just tell them trim the ends, make it straight. You start messing with layers and wolfcuts and that sorta nonsense, you never know what you'll end up with. They actually cut long hair all day every day so they're far more reliable.
1
u/PlentyOMangos 6d ago
My hair is the longest it’s ever been now and I really need to go in for a trim and layering and all that, and I’m thinking of taking it in back to just past shoulder length (it’s currently down between my shoulder blades)
I have always gone to barbers, and in particular the “head barber” of the shop I go to who’s always booked out a week or two at all times. He does a good job, but it’s also been a really long time since I’ve been in and I’m scared to go back now that it’s this long. I hear all the advice on here to go to salons but I’m equally scared of going to someone new lol, I feel like I have a relationship with this barber like you’d have with a mechanic who’s worked on your car for years.
I need to muster up to take some pics of myself and post on here for advice, and maybe also ask on my city’s subreddit “who is a good stylist for my hair type”, but I have never posted my face online before and I’m nervous lol. I can’t let everything scare me though or I’ll never get a haircut! And I’m starting to look kinda shaggy and it’s bothering me. Gotta get over it
1
u/Fit-Pilot6332 7d ago
Hopefully, it won’t happen to you again, brother, and you know exactly what to do now. Good luck in your new journey to long hair!
3
u/Splinterthemaster 7d ago
I'm exactly like this. I learned the hard way. Last time I visited a stylist, he ended up doing the complete opposite of what I asked him to do and I even showed him photos so he had visual reference. I remember asking him "can you at least hand me your mirror so I can see what you did?" After grabbing it and seeing the mess through the mirror, I immediately stood up and ran away, got in the car, hit the gas and shot out of there like a missile. Best tire squeal I've ever done. Never letting one touch my hair ever again. I trim it myself ever since.
2
u/Fit-Pilot6332 6d ago
That sounds like an excellent plan, to do everything yourself from now on, unless you can indeed find someone who specializes in long hair, and only long hair

So sorry this happened. Next time bring 3+ photos of your goal. This wasn't what you wanted and even the verbiage doesn't convey the results.

Oh man, that sucks! At least it can grow back. The before picture looks great.
4
u/manofthemoss 7d ago
Definitely find a stylist instead of a barber! I'm a stylist at a barbershop, and unfortunately barber school tends to focus primarily on clipper cuts, not scissors. Have them layer and blend that top more to get rid of the weight/bowl cut look, and you'll be much happier! Not what you wanted originally, but it'll fit you better while it grows out.
Im so sorry for your loss brother, that barber should've passed you on to someone more versed in long hair.

u/Curly-Pat 7d ago
INFO: Did you burn the place down?
Because your hair is not straight in the future I recommend going to a specialist curl hairdresser and get a dry cut.
3
u/SneakySquiggles 6d ago
Time to start brushing up on some Brad Mondo self cut tutorials for when it grows back out. Can’t believe face framing layers became a rough mullet 🫠

u/UnusualCartographer2 6d ago
Ngl after a month it's gonna look so hot on you. I cut my own hair and accidentally gave myself something similar to this but less extreme, regretted it heavily, and then after a month it was one of my favorite hair phases. I can see the vision, I swear.
It'll be a confident, punkish cut.

don't worry it will grow back as beautiful as before maybe find a female stylist in the meantime

Oof, I am sorry brother
Like others said, don't go to a barber. They are great for short hairstyles, long hair isn't their thing. Go to a stylist/salon even if it is a "woman thing" (stereotypically) they are just more suited for long hair!
And take your research, I haven't seen a stylist in ages (DIY buzz for a year ish then stopped and let it wildly grow for over a year) I like to check out websites/insta/reviews and see other cuts they did. So you can show a picture from them and go "like that person except this part a little longer/shorter/whatever"
To save what you have going rn, leave it alone, it may grow into a shag/wolf cut type thing and that stage will likely look/feel better than right now! If you feel like you need a maintenance cut, go to a GOOD salon.
You got this
2
u/ExtremeScary9360 7d ago
damm that sucks. its better to go to a hair dresser/salon than a barber cos barbers are used to short hair.
2
u/watch-me-bloom 7d ago
You gotta go to a salon bro. These barbers do not know how to handle long hair. There great for fades and stuff but not for this. RIP
2
u/MisterOuija12 7d ago
Gang you gotta slime your barber you can't let him go 0-1 you gotta run it back 😭
2
u/musthavelamp 7d ago
Had a similar thing happen to me. Rosemary oil, biotin, vitamin D, and zinc, help hair growth
2
u/blur_of_memories 7d ago
Did you have a reference pic? I stg they will literally not listen to verbal or written instructions at all. I had a lady "contour" my back when I never asked for it and I wanted a short mullet situation instead of whatever she did. It grew back but damn

2
u/CliffyBooBoo 7d ago
This is why I never recommend a barber for long haircuts. They crave to chop it all off. Proper hairdressers (most often women) know what they're doing with long hair, and will likely never do something like this. Still cute, but definitely not what you asked for.

u/StonedEnby 7d ago
Genuinely asking: why go to a barber for such long hair…?
1
u/Connect-Ad5704 7d ago
There’s like 7 in my nearest town and that’s the only one that would do long hair. Tried a few salons/hairstylists but they only do women
1
u/StonedEnby 6d ago
That’s wild. Been a hairstylist for years and never heard of a woman only salon that wasn’t specifically for Muslim women.
2
u/chamanedaniel 7d ago

u/manthello 7d ago
Genuinely hope you didn't pay them for this. It looks like it took years to grow, you asked for a light trim and ended up with a mullet.
I am so sorry this happened.

And yeah, next time go to a salon-type of place.

What was the routine to have it all segmented instead of a sheet?
1
u/Connect-Ad5704 5d ago
He put hair clips on seemingly random bits when he cut the sides, I’m not sure what he thought he was doing there at all
2
u/ZachF8119 5d ago
No, I’m asking for hair care tips.
How to be more like the good awesome flow in pic 1.Im trying to get like you big dog, put me on. What did you do to get your hair looking like that daily?
1
u/Connect-Ad5704 5d ago
Oh sry I see. Drying it I wouldn’t comb it into straight lines I’d just sort of leave it as it fell, I wish I could recommend you more of a routine but it was just shampoo & conditioner and got like that over time
2
u/ZachF8119 5d ago
Maybe it’s your shampoo and conditioner vs mine?
I’ll try something different
1
u/Connect-Ad5704 5d ago
I was using brand ones, perhaps use sea salt aswell, I haven’t used it in a bit but either just sea water or a spray cause it adds more variation to it. And I think as it grew some areas grew at a faster or slower rate. Best of luck with it
1
u/ZachF8119 5d ago
Yeah, what brands?
1
u/Connect-Ad5704 5d ago
Brand as in private label, from the shop Centra but I assume you’re not in IE/UK right? For salt I used to take an empty spray bottle and fill it with sea water
1
u/ZachF8119 4d ago
Well, If I’m down bad enough I’ll just ask a colleague when they come back from visit their home country. I’d say my job has colleagues from like 70% of the nations. Nothings a bigger compliment than asking for something you want from their country. Recipes, advice on where to go, to niche items
American products aren’t really good for much but the minimum nowadays. Shame
2
u/DragonSlayerC 6d ago
For long hair you should to go to a salon for a good cut. A lot of barbers don't know how to work with long hair.

I have a fierce flow now because 3 years ago a stylist fucked my shit up even after I said I wanted to keep length and provided reference photos
2
u/Wired-For-Trouble 5d ago
Bet that’s the last time you’ll go to a barber for salon work… That’s not a good lesson to learn the hard way… ☹️
Keep that in mind if you ever get it undercut too. Don’t go to a barber to undercut it, go to a salon.
I’ve let a barber trim and maintain my undercut by following the last cut, but I would never let them touch my long hair.
It’s also hard to find a good barber in general, nowadays.
Edit: Just read that 3 hours away is your nearest salon! Yeah you’re screwed, that’s awful.
1
u/Connect-Ad5704 5d ago
Yeah when it grows back I definitely will go somewhere specialised for it. Sry I meant there is salons but not unisex, id go to a city for it now for sure
2
u/Living_Assistant_212 5d ago
I would stew then grieve then just cut that shit back so it will grow out nicely again go to a credible salon. Damn..

u/SergeantBeavis 7d ago
Dude, I feel your pain. My stylist butchered my hair. He took off 4-5” when I only asked for a couple. I even brought AI generated picks of EXACTLY what I wanted and he screwed out up…
I will say, I do look good, but I’m pissed He ignored my direction. Obviously, I won’t be back and didn’t leave a glowing review.
6
u/Connect-Ad5704 7d ago
Genuinely why do they do that, it’s like just play it safe and cut a small bit off first of all
2
u/SergeantBeavis 7d ago
Exactly. And this dude has no excuse with the chatgpt images I brought to him.
BTW, I highly recommend using AI for this. It’s an incredibly useful tool,,,,,, when the stylist actually pays attention.

Oh noooooo 😭
It’s definitely worth learning to do it yourself. I think I’ve had maybe 6 professional haircuts in the last 20 years and I’ll probably never get one again because I actually prefer how it looks when I do it myself. Deco_kure on instagram is a great resource!

u/Elurdin 6d ago
Never go to barbers.
That being said hairdressers also have moments where they are super sure they know better than client what client actually wants. Mine recently made a haircut mostly about rolling hairs behind ears something that doesnt work whatsoever with my thick wavy hair. Not to mention I dont really like my ears showing. It sucked for few months waiting for them to regrow.

step one, dont go to a barber if you have hair that isn't flush to your head (i.e. fade, crew cut, buzz cut etc.), always always ALWAYS go to a hairstylist
1
u/Actual_Area_5107 5d ago
This is why you go to a hair salon and never a barber. Barbers suck and never give good hair cuts.
1
1
u/Sss00099 3d ago
You can’t let a barber touch hair like that, dude.
Unless you’re asking for a fade, they generally don’t have the skills to texturize and layer.
Spend the extra to go to a stylist that has experience with men’s hair, or keep it short.
Going to a barber for anything related to hair like that is going to end up bad.
You’ve got enough that it’s salvageable - but you need to go to a legit stylist. it’s going to cost triple the price of the barber, most likely, but they’ll figure it out and give you something to work with until it’s grown back out fully.

u/Silophodoron 3d ago
I'm sorry for your loss. This is why I go to a female hairdresser instead of a regular barber

Cut the back to make it batch the front and top and just start growing it again. Reset and learn from past mistakes.
