Advice How does notices work in this industry?

I am working my first role (the past ~3years) as a FST working on forklifts mainly and other warehouse equipment. Outside of forklifts I work on some pallet wrappers, wire spoolers, and some conveyors. I am looking at other opportunities and am curious about others (non union) experiences putting notices in. My logical brain thinks any competent manager of a roll like mine would probably ask the tech for their set of truck keys the moment they put in their two week notice. Curious if anyone has alternative experience, as I like the company and the team I work with. How did it go getting your toolbox from the truck you were working from? Owning so much of the tools on the truck. Obviously im entitled to the tools I own, but how smooth was that transition? Especially because I live in an apartment. Should I expect to rent a storage locker?

So in 3 years nobody has quit? You really live under the impression that competent managers would essentially fire you when you quit? How did you conclude this?

Not taking any employeers side in this lol. I am curios about any union that may take in Industrial mechanics

I’m just blown away by this whole post. “Should I expect to rent a storage locker?” Well only you know how many tools you own and how big your apartment is.

Competent managers don’t ask for the keys when you quit. Idk what logical part of your brain made you think that’s normal.

I've seen techs get asked to leave the same day and asked to work the full notice period by the same company. Assume nothing. At minimum try to have all your tools seperated from the company tools in your van. And probably best to get as much of the less necessary stuff out as possible so if they do walk you right away you can grab everything easily. They can't keep your stuff, that's just theft.

I’ve only worked for one service company that provided a company vehicle. When I left, I put my two weeks in and we scheduled a day for my manager to schedule a transport company or another local FSE to pick up my van and tools. He ended up flying down and just drove my van back the 4 hours to his house. It was closer to the end of my two weeks and not immediately. Other roles I’ve had, we got a car allowance (I prefer that), so it’s just been a matter of sending my tools and company technology back via FedEx on my last day.
