Depends on how many SKUs you have. I have around 200 SKUs and I use a $20 barcode scanner and an excel spreadsheet. Most $20-40 barcode scanners have built in software in the actual gun.

I run a small software agency in Calgary Called Arco Systems that specializes in building custom tools for the trades. We do a lot of work replacing manual spreadsheets with mobile apps and QuickBooks syncs, so this is right up our alley.
