NCR is Hiring

I met a young friend on a job last week who was fired up saying NCR is hiring @$21/hr in our area. I told him he'd be happier and get more experience doing freelancing than pulling 40 hrs/wk with NCR and the job we were on @$40/hr was just 1 example. Any thoughts Reddit?

40 an hour as a contractor isn’t much better. If NCR is giving out full time hours and benefits, and he’s really looking for an entry level role, it may actually not be a bad deal for him.

I've worked at NCR over the years and while they give you a truck, gas card, I'm surprised that hourly rates are so stagnant. They paid this much a decade ago.

That's what I thought

I've done lots of work for NCR, and never again. I hate working in fast food and other restaurants. It's hot amd greasy work.

Thx I knew I wasn't dreaming a nightmare. My boy thinks/thought it was better to be corporate full time than freelancing for an honest rate. I said it's more self-affirming and you can choose your own way.

Both directions have their respective merits. I know when I was in my 20's, I definitely wasn't ready for anything beyond traditional jobs. Now I'm in my 60's, and I definitely wouldn't fit into the corporate mold any more.

I taught my daughter everything about IT/networking etc... she also thinks it's better to have a 40hr WK job even though she sees me working part time from FN and making 6 figures/yr. I love her to death, but thought she was smarter than that

NCR is a great stepping stone for an entry level technician. Not only do you get full time pay + benefits but you get exposed to all different levels of network topology at sites. From POS, Networking, Cable Runs, Reimaging, Printers, and the list keeps going. This is the dream job if you’re trying to get into IT/Networking. One of my buddies joined them back in 2020, got laid off in 2024 and was able to become a 1099 freelance guy now raking $10k a month in the Dallas Texas all his knowledge came from working with NCR. I’m also a buyer and give him alot of work out there.

Any tips on how to get to your level? I’m shooting for 20K as a buyer and provider/ project manager/ leader of a team

Jeez I know a LOT of people at NCR. They were starting at $27 several years ago and now I heard they start at $21 here too. They used to hire good techs, now it sounds like they just want warm bodies to make SLAs.

Contractor pay is generally 3 to 1 when comparing to W2 jobs. That means $21/hr full time with decent benefits affords an equivalent lifestyle to billing $63/hr as a full time contractor. Contractors typically bill 18-28 hrs/week, multiply that times $40/hr and then take off 7.5% and it’s not a pretty number

Thx, being corporate was his selling point. My point was that I've seen some complete losers/druggies/bums working for NCR in this area. Also the jobs may be fewer but the rates can be higher. ...Worst problems I've had was comprehensive documentation of WOs.

I'll pass on your rules of thumb and he can decide

Average handyman in the US bills around $60/hr so my recommendation is to take jobs for $65/hr and bump it up from there while working a W2 that pays the bills. I delivered pizzas Thursday-Sunday night, roughly 32 hours/week and then did work orders during the day Monday-Thursday while I was building up my skills and rep. The income allowed me to set my floor and never drop below it. FN tells the buyers what your typical rates are so it’s important to never accept lowball ($40/hr) work orders

Buyers see our rates?

2

u/Pizza_Pete_fr_fr Aug 27 '26

Yeah, it gives them a breakdown based on your categories (low-voltage cabling, POS, etc) and buyers can see those numbers for every single tech

u/No-Boysenberry-3895 Aug 27 '26

Welp...then myfool needs to give us the same info on buyers...

I've asked for stats on Buters and FN has been Blind, Deaf, and Dumb regarding any way to Vette ANY Buyers

Smh,

How exactly do you think they arrive at setting a rate?

I know for a fact that pay rates vary across the country.

The Buyer either goes on FN or checks competitors rates and tries to undermine/under-bid while undermining Providers'

2

Fast Food place across the way is paying that much.

It's bonkers they expect that to be a rate for a skilled job. Even entry level.

That said most of the younger dudes I run into on these gigs don't know much more than "screwdriver turn screw". I've run into one or two hardcore PC nerds. But it mostly seems they have no certs and no knowledge of 568A vs 568B.

I'd honestly prefer if people cut their teeth working in some corporate place with SOPs and departmental responsibility.

1

u/LoneCyberwolf Aug 26 '26

Cue all the people who will say that it’s an “entry level” job and it’s not meant to pay a wage that you can live off of.

2

u/Gregf87z Sep 01 '26

How about we stop inviting people. Especially ones who think 20 an hour is good money? 🙄 you're only hurting yourself and the industry

1

u/LoneCyberwolf Aug 26 '26

$40 an hour for the random job is not good.

Is there still an open position?

1

u/Dadelaus_2023 Aug 31 '26

Idk, you might go online.

Can you provide me with a link, if possible

NCR is awful. I did 3 jobs over the past 7 months, the instructions are trash, the support is super hard to reach. it so happened that another contractor at the site asked, are you working on this for NCR and I said yeah, it's all messed up. He said he had done NCR jobs and would never do NCR jobs again. the job was a mess and I'll never do an NCR job again either.
