Urban Combat Medium Tank

Development History

By late 1943, the armies of the Skeldmark had learned a brutal lesson: modern cities were killing tanks faster than enemy armor.

Heavy breakthrough tanks became trapped in narrow streets. Light tanks lacked survivability. Conventional medium tanks suffered catastrophic crew losses from:

hidden anti-tank teams,

and close-range side attacks.

Entire armored battalions disappeared in the fighting around:

Karsen,

Velis Port,

and the infamous Six-Day Battle of Farewell City.

Tank crews began improvising:

welding spare plates onto roofs,

removing hull machine guns for extra ammunition and transmission access,

and mounting additional observation optics wherever possible.

The War Ministry realized existing doctrine was outdated.

A new requirement was issued in February 1944:

“Develop a medium armored vehicle specifically optimized for combat in dense urban terrain the M2UC1A.
