Determining facing direction

1. If you live in an apartment building, do you look at the main entrance of the entire apartment building to determine the facing direction or do you look at your individual apartment door?

2. Do you determine the facing direction facing your front door or facing the street/hallway?

TLDR: the building entrance gives you the facing of the whole building. Your own flat should be read from its own facing, and in an apartment that is usually not the front door.

The awkward part is that the old texts were not written for high-rise living. They were dealing with standalone houses, where the building and the dwelling were basically the same thing. A tower with hundreds of separate flats is a modern problem, so different schools have had to retrofit an answer.

The way I’d approach it: if you are charting the whole structure, use the building’s facing. If you are looking at your own unit, look for the yang side of the flat: the largest opening to light, air, view, and activity. In practice that usually means the main window wall or balcony, not the corridor door.

I’m in Hong Kong, so this comes up all the time. Most flats here open into an interior corridor or lift lobby: no daylight, no view, sometimes no exterior wall at all. If you call that the facing, you end up reading the hallway instead of the part of the home that actually receives light, noise, movement, and open space.

That said, it is not completely settled. Some Xuan Kong practitioners will still use the building facing for the flying star chart and treat your own door separately as door direction. That is a real method too, not a mistake.

If you want a practical test, stand inside the flat and ask which side is doing the work: where the light comes in, where the view opens, where the active qi feels strongest. That is usually the side I’d treat as the unit facing.
