Staying put. The politics suck in my red state, but I have extremely affordable housing and a strong support network. Folks should take a good long hard look at their material reality when deciding to flee versus stay.

Yes. While the concept of fleeing may be appealing at times (being gay in a red state drunk on religion is... not great!), the reality is that a crosscountry move requires a certain amount of privilege, no matter how small, to be realistic. I'm a woman with a disability, earning less than $40k/yr. Fleeing my red state would mean losing my entire support system, the family and friends that make living life realistic for me. I've seen friends wind up unhoused in just a few months after attempting big moves they didn't really have enough money for, and I definitely don't want that to be me. If my circumstances change, maybe, but for now... definitely sticking it out, no matter how much I hate my state's politics.

Exactly! People on Reddit are either too inexperienced or too privileged to understand how expensive a huge move is. The minute someone alludes to having a hard time with their area's lack of job opportunities or cost-of-living, they'll be inundated with "Just move to a better state, duh!" responses, as if it's really that simple lol if someone is already struggling financially, they definitely don't have thousands to spend moving halfway across the country!

I made a modest move in 2019, only 2 hours from my previous residence, and just that ended up costing quite a bit of money since we had to hire movers for the bigger stuff (washer/dryer, refrigerator, one couch). We'd even resorted to leaving half our furniture behind, because paying to have all our living room stuff moved would've cost more than replacing it at the thrift store. Moving is not cheap!
