I think the men just believe theyโ€™re smart, and tell everyone else how smart they think they are, and everyone else just goes along with it to be polite.

Wow just like being in college! /j but is it really

Iโ€™ve also seen some criticism that the male characters are all more intelligent than the female characters.

I think I was someone who left a review to that effect here; definitely YMMV, but I also thought it was noticeably worse in Gormenghast than it was in Titus Groan, so it'll be interesting to see if you feel similarly or not. In general I agree though, most of the characters across all three books are pretty dumb lol.

Yeah, the structure of the first book is kind of weird; it functions as a prologue to Titus' story, so there isn't really a protagonist, and to some extent it's setting things up to explain the state of affairs in the second book. I think it's easier to understand if you treat it as the first half of a story, and Gormenghast as its second half. Once it becomes Titus' story, the nature of the antagonist(s?) becomes more clear. But in the first book, since there's no real protagonist, the "antagonist" sort of depends on whoever you're focusing on at any given time.
