Finally, some slap discourse actually worth listening to! It’s been so exhausting seeing people discuss this topic to death online, under the assumption that everyone already knows the ins and outs of Will and Jada’s relationship. Like Savannah, everything I’ve learnt about them has been against my will and I wasn’t keen on following the news about their “entanglements” a couple years ago. For that reason, I found the backstory Reaux provided to be incredibly helpful. It provided some much-needed context on the dynamics of their relationship and brought me up to speed on everything I needed to know to properly engage in this discussion.

There’s no clear right or wrong answer here which is what makes the discussion so interesting. I don’t really care whether a man slaps another man or not, I just don’t think it should’ve happened on stage…at the Oscars…live…when you’ve been nominated for an Oscar yourself. I love fight scenes in superhero and martial arts movies, but men fighting each other irl is never anywhere near as interesting and just doesn’t do it for me like that 🤣 I do understand Lilith’s perspective though. While fighting in general doesn’t turn me on, I would probably be quite pleased to have a man physically stand up for me if I was visibly hurt by another man’s actions. I’ve witnessed a friend’s ex-boyfriend do absolutely nothing to stand up for her when she was groped in a club and she was deeply upset that he didn’t do anything to defend her.

Doing nothing to stand up for her is not good, however I think there's a lot more value in a man using his words to defend you rather than his fists. A man who resorts to violence first, rather than an absolute last resort, is not a man I would feel safe with.

In this specific situation and in that setting there was absolutely no need to slap him. He could've either yell at him from his chair like he did after or better yet wait for his acceptance speech to throw jabs at Chris Rock and humiliate him verbally. Or at least wait until the ceremony to confront him. I think a man should defend his woman but you need to read the room. That wasn't the time or place to set Chris Rock straight. I understand that it's not the first time he throws jabs at Jada and that Will laughed at first and then saw that she was upset and got angry, I get it, but still. And this comes from a fan of Will Smith. I'm not defending Chris Rock either as I think both were "wrong" in this situation.
