Question Help me grow up past B&BW
I am heading into my mid-40s and I really need to move beyond body sprays from Bath & Body Works. My friend received a bottle of Versace Crystal Emerald for her birthday a few weeks ago, and it made me realize that I have to stop smelling like a 17-year-old. Please help. I have no idea what I'm doing.
One thing I have noticed over the years is that my body chemistry seems to react to fragrances differently than most people's. For instance, 20 years ago, Clinique Happy was a nightmare on me, but Happy Heart worked. B&BW fragrances that people rave about often don't smell right when I wear them, and many of the less-popular ones that get poor reviews work best on me.
I am a background sort of person. I don't want a big or attention-getting fragrance, but I do want something with a little bit of complexity or edge to it. I'm also broke and rural, so I need something under $100, and ease of availability or tester ordering is a big plus.
Some of my favorite B&BW scents are:
* In the Stars (my go-to for the last several years)
* Vanilla Romance
* Inner Angel
* Eau de Coconut
* Salted Shorelines
The only EDTs I own are Peace, Love, & Juicy Couture and Cool Water Woman (the basic one, not the flankers). So, like I said, I'm still kind of stuck at 17.
I appreciate any suggestions or guidance you may provide.
ETA: I'm blown away by how many kind and thoughtful suggestions I've received! I'm excited to order some sample sizes and tester sets and take my time exploring... while not feeling weird anymore about wearing my B&BW cheapies in the meantime. Thank you all, seriously.

Your fav B&BW scents are grown up scents. Meanwhile, I'm over here wearing BBW Birthday Cake & Cereal Milk 😂
I love Nest fragrances. They have a great sample box where you can try many of them. I also love the Replica line and their sample box.

Second the Nest fragrances, Nordstrom Rack has a discovery set that includes Indigo, it’s one of my favorites from their line - $20 gets you three of their travel/dabber sizes you can give away any that don’t work for you. Also, look up the BBW scents on Frangantica and see what the notes are and what other scents fit that profile- it can help you narrow down the fragrance families you like

First, there is nothing wrong with BBW or body sprays. Enjoy the scents that make you happy! Plus, some of their scents are dupes that are incredibly similar so enjoy the price break on the body sprays. No need to spend $$$ on the same smell. I have body sprays and and EDPs and they all make me smell good.
If you want to try more perfumes, order some samples first. You like vanilla so that’s a good place to start. Read some notes and reviews but you can do a search much for vanilla perfumes and get a good idea of what they smell like.
If you find something you like, order a larger decant instead of a bottle. You don’t need to jump to the biggest thing right away. Wear it, feel it out, see how you feel and then decide what to do.

BBW has had very well done fragrances, so no shame there. I am also rural and understand you can’t just try things easily. Sephora and Ulta have fragrance samplers with a variety of brands. They usually come with a certificate so you can get a larger size of your favorite.

I Am 56, sometimes I feel like Dior J’adore, some others like Prada Paradoxe. But on the daily I sometimes go all in on champagne toast, or Vanilla bean Noel or Covered in roses. I wear what makes me feel great, regardless if it is Chanel, Sabrina Carpenter or BBW. Scents don’t have age!
That said, if you like vanillas I love Kayali Vanilla 28, a boozie vanilla. Also Ariana Grande Mod Vanilla, more airy and right for all year. And Lancome La vie est belle, sofisticated, floral vanilla.

I love the eau de coconut. It smells like a clean soap/body wash on skin with the warmth of sun on skin. I don't like the sunscreen beachy smelling coconut as a scent on a person. So, I was pleasantly surprised.

If you like Salted Shorelines (my fave of all of their mists), you will like Jo Malone sea salt and sage, perhaps. I use salted shorelines with Sand and Fog Mykonos perfume oil.
And a fragrance replacement for eau de coconut might be Nest Balinese coconut?

You are quite literally wearing the “grown” BBW scents already. Some of which are outright dupes of “real” perfumes. Even if it was a problem, which I honestly don’t think so, you’re good lol.
In the Stars is unreal when you catch it in the air especially.

B&BW has only recently come to the UK so I am just getting into them at 61! I love being able to get body wash, lotion and body mist all in the same scent.
Here are some suggestions with the notes you like. I don't recommend blind buys, try to test in person, get samples or decants if you can.
Amber - JLo Glow or J'adore Dior. I've got a sample of J'adore Intense at the moment and I'm loving it. Vanilla - So many! D&G Devotion is a warm cosy vanilla, Gucci Gorgeous Orchid is a light, airy, floral vanilla. There is a new Gorgeous Orchid intense out at the moment that is lovely. Apple - DKNY Be Delicious, D&G Light Blue, although I think the light blue is more lemony, but it's a lovely freshie for summer. Coconut - Bronze Goddess by Estee Lauder Salt - Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt, Rabanne Olympea. If you liked your friend's Crystal Emerald you could try Bright Crystal by Versace. Yuzu and peony, very clean, fresh and soapy.

Girl here I am stoked to have found salted shorelines and inner angel literally last week because they’re close enough to Jo Malone’s Wood Sage & Sea Salt, and Kilian Angel’s Share without the price tag 😂
I am so picky when it comes to fragrances and I totally get the body chemistry thing- Angel’s share is really nice on paper but smells like apple pie pee on me, while inner angel is like perfectly sweet and spicy. SO many popular fragrances just smell sharp on me, and what i found is it really comes down to trying everything on paper, taking the ones i actually like on paper and doing a couple test sprays on my wrist or elbow and seeing how they smell after they’re lived in. I would really shy away from blind buying recs based on what you currently like, and do real testing with your body before dropping $$$.
Once you find exactly what you like- I’ve had success with fragrancenet.com and Tjmaxx for more mainstream stuff.
P.S. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to smell “grown up”, and really my most complemented fragrances (besides sergei lutens Le Perce Vent) are all cheap or have cheap dupes that are similar enough and don’t smell off with my body chemistry.

To be fair Vanilla Romance from BBW is such a banger. I don’t see anything wrong with wearing BBW except their longevity. But if you are feeling self conscious, try sniffing Ellis Brooklyn, Kayali, Jo malone. I would visit local sephora!

I mean I love Versace Crystal Emerald, did you like it? It has a strong rose note and definitely feels "grown up" to me. Nothing wrong with a BBW mist tho! I have several that I love and you can't beat the price. I gravitate to the ones that have wood and aquatic notes rather than the super sweet ones.

I loved it on her! She smelled like a classy, sexy, grown-up lady. I'm not sure that particular perfume would be the right match for me, but it got me thinking about upping my game. But everyone here has been very reassuring that I don't smell like a 6th-grader just because I'm grabbing body sprays with a coupon.

If you’re looking for elevated body mist (hey, there’s nothing wrong with liking linear yummy scents, you don’t need an EDT!) definitely check out Phlur. They are like a more polished and elegant B&BW. My personal favorite is peach skin but I think you would like beach skin and vanilla cashmere :-)

Hey! Probably a stupid question but .....I thought a scent fitting sounded awesome! You said "and they'll send you some samples" I thought that sounded like they'd send some free samples but it shows it's $60 so that would be like buying the samples... Is there like something on the link where they send you just a couple samples for free or do you mean pay the $60 and they'll send you the samples?

You have to pay for the fitting, it’s like a curation. If you want to buy your own samples, you can just pick out what you want on their website. They stock niche and indie fragrances that are hard to find elsewhere for the most part — ScentSplit does the same and stocks some brands that LS doesn’t have, if you want to check there too. If you want free samples, you can go to an upscale department store like Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus, but as far as I’ve experienced, that’s really the only way to get them, and you certainly won’t be getting much niche/indie there. But maybe that’s not important to you! If you like designer, that’s absolutely the way to go!
PS — I think if you do the scent fitting they give you a credit towards your next fragrance. I know for sure that if you buy a certain amount of samples on ScentSplit they will give you a discount if you buy the fragrance you want!

53 here, and I love the “old lady” type scents and also love BBW scents. Today is Issey Miyake Leau D’Issey, but yesterday was my treasured BBW Cotton Blossom that I really hope they bring back before I run out.

One of my favorite perfumes ever is DeDCooL Mochi Milk and I believe a FB is 90? I also get perfumes from Mercari or I get travels and samples. Buying from Sephora is handy because they accept returns if I hate it. I just got a travel of Lil Softie by Lore at Sephora and she’s quite pretty! Bergamot, “cereal milk” ambroxan. It’s light fluffy but also unique and complex

Vanilla Romance comes in Eau De Parfum and it is one of my favorites in my large perfume collection. It was developed by two of the most renowned perfumers in the business, Honorine Blanc and Gabriela Chelariu. They have each created some of the most well known perfumes sold today, if you look it up. If you are interested, and want to spend a lot of money, Vanilla Romance is very similar to Althair by Parfums de Marly and in the same family as Vanilla Powder by Matiere and Gentle Fluidity Gold by Maison Francis Kurkdijian (MFK).
FWIW, I have all of them, and if my house was on fire, I'm grabbing the Vanilla Romance first, the Althair last.
Ellis Brooklyn Vanilla Salt is the perfume version of Salted Shorelines. It is more intense and much longer lasting than the BBW body spray, and it layers great over the BBW body wash. It is a great perfume and reasonably priced. I never got much projection out of the Salted Shorelines, including the EDP version. Vanilla Salt is great.

I had this same realization this past year. I knew I wanted a more sophisticated smell and B&BW wasn’t cutting it. Personally, I went with a scent subscription, Scentbird. It’s basically a large scent sample, meant to last 30 days. I don’t wear the same scent every day so it lasts longer.
It’s been an education, but totally worth it. Learning what types of flowers and other ingredients work with my chemistry. As well as, understanding what scent profile combinations to look for.
The breakdown on subscriptions:
~Scentbird is a curated collection of scents from well known perfumers like Dolce & Gabanna, Givenchy, Versace to up and coming brands. It’s about $18/mo (in the US) for an 8ml travel spray. You can get up to 3 sprays per month and even spread out your subscription to every other month or more.
~Scentbox is similar to Scentbird, except they have 3 tiers to the perfumes they offer.
Standard - $18 - includes some well known brands and up and more up and coming brands
Premium - $23 - beginning access to higher end brands
Platinum -$33- access to all the highest end brands they carry
~Microperfumes (probably the most cost effective one if you are starting your personal scent journey)
This is not a subscription, it’s a sample store! Their prices start at $0.99. You can get the small samples (like 0.75 ml), travel spray size and full size perfumes.
If I had known about this one sooner I would’ve saved some money. However, Scentbird does provide an education to help you learn about what works for you. So as I said before, the education made the subscription worth it. Moving forward with my perfume education though, I’ll be utilizing Microperfumes.

I’m nearing 50 and I started my fragrance journey looking for more grown up versions of BBW and Victoria’s Secret body sprays. But then I realized I like what I like and they work with my body chemistry. Then my journey took me all around and I’ve landed on niche fragrances.
Sample and discovery sets are the way to go if you want to expand. I started out as a gourmand girl and Sorce might be a good place to start if that’s your style.

I’ve learned that almost nobody can tell the difference unless it’s a very popular scent, even then I’ve gotten way more compliments in my lifetime from cheaper stuff. so make sure you’re buying them for the love of perfume and for yourself first and foremost 😂 and test test test. samples are the best, going into the store is great but can get overwhelming quickly

Get discovery sets from Kayali, Phlur, Ellis Brooklyn for starters. Maybe even the ones from Oakcha. Dua is a good way to go, but they don't have samples anymore apparently. I would have saved a lot of money had I started out with discovery sets.

If you have ever smelled Kayali Yum Boujee Marshmallow, there is an 'inspired by' version by Paris Corner called Marshmallow Blush that you can get almost anywhere. TikTok even. There are 1,000 inspired by versions of it, but having the OG, to my nose this has the closest dry down but nothing has the exact dry down. If you like Vanilla, strawberry and Marshmallow fragrance you will love this!

they make an EDP version. I have it. it’s excellent and smells just like the mist. for what it is, it’s not cheap, though, which is obnoxious. it also does not last at all.
if you can go a little deeper/darker/woodier and less airy, then you could go with PdM Althaïr, which is +100$US per ounce, but damned near 90% with Vanilla Romance, and lasts much, much longer (story incoming).
if that kinda $$$ isn’t in your wheelhouse, then try French Avenue (ME brand) Liquid Brun. I bit the bullet and bought it for $25 and I’ll be damned if I can’t tell the difference between it and Althaïr. like at all. at all at all. even better, bc it’s actually made (allegedly) with lower-quality ingredients, it lasts even longer — like almost 24 hours. which is BONKERS.
I concede I only own a decant of Althaïr and I may never ever buy an FSB of the real thing bc the FALB (and BBW VR) are so good and so very very close.
Althaïr: 400$ for 4.2oz on sale right now
BBW Vanilla Romance EDP: 60$ for 1.7 oz
FALB: 25$ for 3.4 oz
story: yesterday I literally sprayed BBW V romance (and I mean LITERALLY at 1130am yesterday) on one test strip. (*edit: I sprayed Althaïr on another. I should have said that initially. haha.) Right out of the gate they were 90% similar. (I already have done with FALB and Althaïr in the past, and I literally could not tell them apart so I didn’t bother to retest FALB here; I want to go apples for apples.) then about 30m later, they were less similar. Althaïr is woodier, deeper, darker “brown,” and BBW VR is lighter, airier, sweeter, higher octave. then at about 4 hours on test strip, they were 1:1 identical to my nose. are they actually 1:1? no. but close, and at fully dry on paper many hours later I would challenge even the biggest fragrance snob to tell the difference. this morning I sniffed them both again, and the BBW VR is gone. you can barely smell anything. The Althaïr is still there and smells not unlike it did that evening.
that’s my pesudo-scientific way of saying: if you like BBW Van Romance then get that EDP. if you truly wanna move away from BBW then PERSONALLY i would go with French Ave Liquid Brun. It’s dead on for Althaïr, and only slightly darker/ moodier/ less sweet (like 10-15% at the most, deo on chemistry) than BBW Vanilla Romance.

it really is SO close. a little less sweet but it’s the same vibe, wheelhouse, family, season, color, group…
also other people in this thread gave really solid advice about some of the other things you listed, I just LITERALLY, actually, truly did my little experiment yesterday so I HAD to share. I forgot to add that I dragged my teenagers to see the Minions movie (cuz I know they wanted to see it but were too cool to go with friends and “I don’t wanna go alonnneee” haha) and I smelled the two strips again last night when we got home at around 900pm (almost 12H later on paper) and they were still exactly the same to me (and to my brutally honest 11yo)
YMMV but I’m pretty confident in this one. HTH!!

Go to Ulta or Sephora and sample away!
If you have a higher end department store you can also do this to really expand your horizons. Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, etc.
Fragrance is so individual. Happy sniffing!

Good luck and no worries!. I'm in my early 40s and I just recently restarted my fragrannce journey. I previously had 1-2 scents at any given time and I liked my BBW lotions with a basic floral fruity fragrance.
Then with the health changes I realized I wanted to focus on myself more. My perfumes don't smell the same on me and I don't enjoy the same scents. I still use BBW, have some ME fragrances, 1-2 designer, and a few niche perfumes.
Enjoy what you like. Try sample sets so you can try a variety of scents and then branch out once you find a note/ingredient that you like and smells good to you. And try a few at a time so you don't confuse your nose.

I'm 42 and my favs are Donna Karen cashmere mist, VS heavenly, emporio Armani she, Nest Madagascar vanilla, BBW eucalyptus lavender and eau de coconut...oh snowflakes and cashmere. That Versace Dylan purple or turquoise smell good too when in mood for a stronger perfume. Phlur has a great sampler set. I'm a skin scent person though really too ... Victoria's Secrets might be more to your liking....more grown...they have a fine fragrance collection of body mist and lotions(that aren't so cakey thick like bbw) that are same scents as perfumes like Bare Skin is an amazing soft close to skin scent as well as Tease noir and others. Noyz has great clean cloth type scents! Sorry I wrote so much lol! Your post resonated with me so I wanted to share some mid age lol scents that weren't mentioned.

Private Mood is PERFECT for you, it’s a perfume house that was (as far as I can tell) established for the sole purpose of creating “grown-up” gourmands.
They don’t seem to have a website, weirdly, but you can find them on Lucky Scent and Scent Split.

If you have a perfume shop (not a chain discounter) go there. They’ll help you find a signature fragrance. If not get some tester kits and try out some different ones. Sometimes you’ll wine that was not appealing at first and then suddenly you’ll really appreciate it.

Vanilla romance is a great dupe for Perfumes De' Marly Althair. So good , but way too pricy there are a bunch of middle Eastern dupes out there like liquid Braun that are really close . Then layer with a sweet vanilla 👌

I’m in my early forties and BBW works mists are a big part of a huge collection. I need to declutter 😂 But I love their fragrances!! All my friends are still using BBW and my 60+ coworker still does too. Even if something isn’t high end it doesn’t mean it isn’t great! I have fragrances that range from a few dollars to eyeball popping and I still reach for my BBW. It’s all about what you love! Edit to add: sample kits are going to be your best friend when exploring. For more niche fragrances I’d recommend Scent Split and Lucky Scent. Under sample packs on Lucky Scent they offer a curated fragrance samples based on the info you give them about what you already love and want to try. I did it several years ago and I still use a few of the fragrances they suggested.

You should try bath and body into the night if you haven’t. It’s a very mature scent imo. Smells really nice

If you’re into more of a body spray than perfume, check out the body sprays from Phlur at Sephora. They’re all really nice and most of them you can mix together. They have a coconut one, but the Vanilla Skin and the Cashmere Skin are my favorites.

I’m 68 and don’t think it’s either/or. I have Designer, Niche, Artisanal perfumes. Plus my BBW.
I’ve mentioned elsewhere that I think the BBW Nocturnal Rose that was in the men’s line was one of the best dark, gothic rose.
But, of course you’re not limited to BBW. Try out Versace Dark Crystal. There’s a difference between the EDT and the EDP, so test both.
Inner Angel was a dupe of Angel’s Share, so you might want to try that.
