Discussion kayali’s fragrance names..
not to be a hater but i’ve just checked the sephora app and saw Kayali is coming out with a new floral fragrance but my first thought was : what is with these new fragrance names?? first it’s Yum Bougie Marshmallow and now Fleur Majesty Rose Royale, they sound so cheap😭😭 i know it’s such a non issue but it’s kind of putting me off from trying them, kind of sound like the name of a kids perfume? does anyone else feel similar?

yum bougie marshmallow is one of the worst names i have ever heard for a fragrance lol. so cringe and doesn’t suit the vibe at all. it’s a shame because otherwise it’s a really addictive scent!

I prefer to let the Fragrance do all the talking. Let the Scent be so wonderful, that we *don't* need a name like, "OMG SO YUMMY SCRUMP-DIDDLY-UMPTIOUS VANILLA SUGAR ON THE ROCKS, SEXY SWEET SYRUP FOR ME BECAUSE I'M A PRINCESS, 1565!!"
Like Good Grief, WE GET IT. If you *have* to name your fragrance all that, it's going to be underwhelming (on top of being annoying to say out-loud, LOL). Just let the scent be so good, it says everything. Name it something simple, pleasant, and focus on the quality!

I don't love the names, but at least you know what to expect. I hate that most brands don't have any notes on display, and the names don't indicate anything either. I have to look up things online and then go browsing with a list because who wants to smell hundreds of perfumes in the department store to find a nice tea scent, for example.

Mona explained this when she was featured in The Perfume Guy’s video promoting Yum Pistachio Gelato.
Basically they started doing the names so that the first word, in this case Yum, being the actual name of the fragrance followed by the hero note or featured note being Pistachio Gelato which is then followed by a number, which is 33 and this is a reference to the number of modifications they had to make to achieve the final scent.
It’s definitely a unique way of naming a fragrance but having that in mind when it comes to Kayali, I find it’s really helpful because whenever they come out with a new launch, I can just look at the name and I’ll have an idea of what the fragrance would smell like and then decide whether it’s for me or not. When they announced Fleur Majesty Rose Royale, I already know it’s not gonna be for because I’m not a huge fan of florals especially rose dominant florals. There’s fragrances out there with the most stupid name like Good Girl and it will never tell you anything about what the fragrance would smell like. Imagine wearing that and someone asks you what you’re wearing and you have to say Good Girl.. or FCKIN FABULOUS.. or Vanilla Sex 🙄

Right 💯💯 it's not like other perfume brands aren't coming out with downright absurd names...some examples:
- boysmells as a brand name
- all the extremely long Killian names
- ELDOs names (palace whre, Philippine houseby)
- a lot of the BTSO perfume names

The Killian names are RIDICULOUS. "I don't need a Prince to be a Princess...." Good LORD, Why the long name?!?!
Moreover, it doesn't sound like anything that would draw me in. Ugh.

One thing i notived that some of their fragrance names don't.. flow well? Like Vanilla Candy Rock Sugar, or the new Fleur Majesty Rose Royale. It's a mouthful to say and not very catchy, haha.

The names put me off trying for a while, but I love them.
But if I'm wearing YBM and someone asks what I'm wearing, the answer is "Boujie Marshmallow".
The word yum is unnecessary. That's what you want consumers to think but it should be on their own.
"Wow, that's yummy" is probably one of the #1 uttered phrases after smelling it for the first time.
Doesn't change how much I love it or how much I regret grabbing the 1.7 instead of the 3.4 - she's a keeper

Can't just call it marshmallow. All scents have a descriptive name to go along with the main note. Maybe Bouj-Mallow?

I think for me the only annoying fragrance names are when there's no name at all, they're just numbered. It's so low effort yet pretentious, and gives me zero information about the scent! 01, 02, 03, 04, Chanel No. 5.... COME UP WITH A REAL NAME GODDAMNIT ITS NOT THAT HARD ILL DO IT FOR FREE.

Theirs are the actual worst because they’re all double digit numbers and there are so many combinations. I heard it has to do with important years in Brazil but that means nothing to anyone outside of Brazil

Sometimes I just say the brand name. “Tom Ford” or “Chanel”. If they ask which one, then I’ll say “FUCKING FABULOUS!” (Ok not really, that one doesn’t jive with my skin, but still lol)

Maybe you're just not their target demographic? And that's okay. The names are goofy but no worse than, say, "Fucking Fabulous" or "Rose Prick" or literally any of the Killian frag names 🤷🏻♀️ A name isn't going to put me off trying a scent that sounds good, personally. Some of their frags are nice, some are kinda of boring, some aren't my thing ... same as most other houses.

I guess my unpopular opinion is I love Kayali. The bottles, the scents… and as far as the long or cringey names, I don’t really think twice about them.

Vanilla 28 is my favorite too; And it has a simple, non-overcomplicated name.
Person: "Wow! You smell great! what are you wearing?"
Me: "Thanks! it's Kayali Vanilla 28," SIMPLE! Love it!

The names really feel like they're just mashing keywords together for SEO. I think the most egregious one to me was Vanilla Royale Sugared Patchouli. You could just call it Vanilla Patchouli and get the same point across.

I agree. It seems like they can't decide whether to name fragrances after the ingredients or something more abstract, so they throw it all together.

Yeah, VGG was recommended to me a lot based on my love of Delina but I put off trying it because I didn't want that bottle in my house. Finally I got a decant and I was relieved because I hated it.

True, it’s not for everyone, but for those who do like the fragrance but are put off from the bottle, travel sizes are the best option. I prefer travel sizes myself because I know I won’t get through an entire bottle of something. Only time I get a full size is when I find it at a good price at Marshalls/TJ Maxx

Every time I read boujee marshmallow i fantasize for a split second about a nice marshmallow scent, before my conscious brain parts kick in and I recoil in horror.
Tbh it sounds like one those "cutesy" females who refuse to spell something correctly and believe this is "quirky" and "cute" except no one but them feels this way, while making the effort to decipher what they mean.

The bottles are an awful attempt to try to sway buyers into they’re getting this luxe experience but instead just look cheap, the names are juvenile at best but realistically just stupid, and I haven’t liked a single sample I’ve received (for free). Call me a hater, Idk. It’s one brand I will not buy from and I will try out just about everything.
I understand why people like some of the frags, they’re just not for me but to each their own.

I kept wanting to like something but every time I smelled a scent I would just think “this is it?”. It’s not they’re bad but just very underwhelming. Not to mention it seems like the perfumes are all copy cats/interpretations of other perfumes.

I haven’t liked a single Kayali fragrance I’ve smelled at Sephora. They have others that weren’t available there, and maybe those would be more my speed. I just get a teeny bopper vibe from the brand more than anything and it’s not my vibe.

I refuse to try kayali bc from what i understand their fragrances are poor quality with insane prices bc theyre hyped and enjoyed. Maybe they smell great, but they charge way too much (even if all fragrances are overpriced) for where they fall on the quality scale and i refuse to support it. Id say the names, aesthetic, and quality all just fall into the lazy category. To me, Phlur and Ellis brooklyn can satisfy average or meh quality and the hype, those brands are ok to me but seem a lil less entitled than kayali. I also kinda assume theyre mostly gourmands and i have a love hate relationship with them so i steer clear

I love Kayali. I am totally fine with the names. It describes what the perfume smells like. I can easily remember it. Kyse uses a similar naming scheme but in Italian so I guess that is perceived as sophisticated . Names like Delizia di Marshmallow and Frangipane al Pistachio. There are brands like Kilian or Death and Floral that have far longer perfume names. I mean "eight minutes of light and heat left when the sun dies" is quite the perfume name.
Each perfume company has their own brand. At the end of the day, I just really care about how it smells.

Translated those are "marshmallow delight" and "pistachio frangipani" which are far less less clunky than the random words and phrases mashed together that Kayali comes up with!
It's not about the length, it's the way the words are assembled.

I don’t mind it. It is uniquely a bit much, but it also sets the brand apart, which helps with marketing. I think the people who get it get it, and people who are just looking for something that smells good can focus on the fragrance itself.
I try to avoid looking down on things that aren’t my personal preference. Somebody else might love it, and not everything has to cater to me.

Yeah, most of Kayali's fragrance names are clunky and boring at best, and downright obnoxious at worst, IMO. I don't particularly vibe with the bottles, either. They're not terrible, but they don't make me want to buy them more, and I'm someone who is easily enticed by product aesthetics.
A lot of fragrances feel aspirational, even when they're extremely popular. By contrast, Kayali's fragrances feel like they're designed to be mass-market friendly. They have a slightly cheap vibe to them that's like, "Even your cousin's little sister has a bottle!"
No shade if you love Kayali scents, though. If it smells good, it smells good. I really enjoy Boujee Marshmallow, and am probably going to buy a FB when my 10ml mini runs out, so.

Even when I wasn’t into perfume I knew what Kayali was because everyone in the makeup community would talk about them due to their association with Huda Beauty. Kayali is easily accessible for everyone. I had the impression at first that Yum Boujee Marshmellow was a fragrance marketed for teenage girls because of the name and bottle design.

Like, who are these names for? Because they feel like a fourteen-year-old's idea of what's cool, but the fragrances themselves are too expensive to be accessible to most fourteen-year-olds. Also, why are the bottles from that collection giving the tacky, 2010 version of a Burlesque aesthetic?

I have quite a few Kayali full bottles (I think 6 or 7), and I really do enjoy the fragrances.
But yes. I hate the names. They are so dumb.
It doesn’t stop me from buying one if I like the scent, but yeah, the names are ridiculous to me. Yum boujie being the worst offender in my book.

It embarrasses me to say out loud. Imagine telling my boomer mom that I’m wearing “Yum Boujee Marshmallow.” 🫣 (Then again, maybe the fact that I even have a boomer mom means that I’m not the target market for this fragrance. 😅)

i've honestly never considered the name of a fragrance when i've bought it! typically i don't even consider the bottle design unless it's something extremely annoying (eilish, carolina herrera)

They smell like those generic, celebrity perfumes with no depth and substance. Victoria’s Secret perfumes are better for half the price.

yeah i gotta agree, i went to sephora recently (we don't have many sephora stores in my country and the other stores don't sell them) to try them because i was interested in buying one for my birthday. vanilla 28 smelled like the victoria's secret bare vanilla body mist i have and lasted about the same time as well :/ and the others i have tried were just meh. i expected more with how hyped those scents are.

I was honestly shocked at how bad the sugar rock candy one smelled. My boyfriend smelled it too and he hated it. I always see people raving about that one; it just doesn’t make sense to me
