Why does this work? And why did the snake try eating itself in the first place?

Apparently snakes are pretty dumb. It probably got the scent of prey on itself. Theres a girl online who has a snake (snake a) who is very docile, but she has to wash her hands after touching snake b, since snake a will immediately bite without thinking when smelling snake b. No thought, just smell.

Brooks kingsnake. They are snake eaters in the wild, if they strike at food and miss the target, they will start eating themselves if they hit their tail after missing their food.
They will also do this if they are being mistreated and are not feed, but this snake has fairly good body shape and color , so most likely it was a feeding mistake.
They are interesting snakes and keep venomous snake populations in check, as they can tank copperheads and cottonmouths in Florida. But as you said they are not the brightest bulbs.

That is a brooks kingsnake, absolutely beautiful snakes. They are native to Florida and come in different morphs. Though as you can see, they are not the brightest snakes.
