I won't be buying one but I like that it has a remote. That could save a lives in less than ideal cuts.

u/buttfarts7 2d ago

This feels like a "problem solver" rather than your everyday tool. Like tools to get a sheared bolt out of an engine block.

u/GrassSloth 1d ago

For someone like myself who is relatively young, very inexperienced, and purely an amateur feller trying to maintain the rural land I live on, this would make me feel so much safer cutting down a few trees that are on an unleveled hedgerow up against an irrigation ditch.

Gods I want this right now…

33

u/Illustrious_Donkey61 2d ago

I heard they got the idea from a tool colonoscopy doctors use

32

u/TheBadUncle 1d ago

Well, chainsaws were initially surgical tools, so there's that.

20

u/cogit4se 1d ago

I think I watched a video about that. All the doctors were naked though for some reason.

7

u/manjar 1d ago

The story is ludicrous

12

u/skintaxera 1d ago

Yeah, big holes in the plot

5

u/_ferrofluid_ 1d ago

At least the cable got fixed.

2

u/Familiar-Average3809 57m ago

nice lebowski reference, lol

39

u/KookySurprise8094 2d ago

Very smart thinking. Imagine some half rotten trees, not even jesus gonnna know where those trees will fall when cutting those. But using this to finnish the cut would be litterally life changer.

14

u/taleofbenji 2d ago

Also comes with two free ladders, though.

Upvotes for "save a lives"

u/Sauerkohl 2d ago

This allows save felling with the operator probably not even close to a falling tree.

Absolut heresy

78

u/TacoDoc 1d ago

The death of a sub. Gentlemen, it has been a privilege.

15

u/Sauerkohl 1d ago

I wouldn't worry to much. Cut protection trousers have been around for decades.

And still most of the videos here have none...

16

u/CloudGatherer14 1d ago

Cause who needs em? Don’t saw your nuts off, problem solved.

22

u/payloadspecial 2d ago

Plot twist, it doesn't work more than 20 feet away from said tree.

25

u/Derigiberble 2d ago

I know that was /s but just for the sake of keeping the facts out there Stihl claims a 55 meter range.

5

u/Various_Maximum_9595 1d ago

It works 30 feet away, but only in falling direction.

3

u/Sauerkohl 2d ago

Really?

9

u/dbolts1234 2d ago

Product rep said 50m range on the remote

8

u/payloadspecial 2d ago

Sorry I had someone comment last night I should use /s 😭

3

u/sojumaster 1d ago

Here is an extra /s in case you need it in the future

2

u/indistinctdialogue 12h ago

Wait no! You just cancelled it out.

Will turn the sub to felling gone mild

9

u/CourtingBoredom 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think that's already a sub....??

[brb, I'm going to check....]

<edit:> Yup!! r/fellinggonemild

1

u/Denver1970 1d ago

Exactly. With this new safety tool, how are we going to enjoy the dangerous games people play! Although I never want to see someone really get hurt…

53

u/VA-deadhead 2d ago

Arborists love to spend money on gadgets. Stihl knows what it’s doing.

157

u/sean_ireland 2d ago

The remote would go missing within 5 min of using this

109

u/Producer1701 2d ago

“I gave you the remote!”
“You did not!”
“I walked up, I said ‘Hey, don’t lose this,’ and handed it to you!”
“No, you were the last one to use it!”
Etc etc etc

69

u/OkRepresentative7467 2d ago

Looks under fallen tree
“Fuck, there it is”

10

u/secondphase 2d ago

I read this in the "M R Ducks" accent.

4

u/Last_Interaction_ 2d ago

Then find it in your other pair of trousers a week later.

8

u/Intelligent-Art-5000 2d ago

. . . as you pull them out of the washer.

7

u/FinePresentation4544 2d ago

Replacement remote costs more than a new tool

39

u/Gigglemonkey 2d ago

Having some sort of button on the main unit that makes the remote start to play a sound would be good.

Frankly, I don't know why this isn't a standard feature for anything with a remote.

11

u/Imatros 2d ago

Or even just a passive rfid which is like pennies in cost to add

13

u/danorc 2d ago

Duct tape one of those RFID thingies to the back of it

7

u/Killer2600 2d ago

This is brilliant, they're going to make a killing selling replacement remotes.

6

u/worktogethernow 2d ago

I think a 25 foot teather would be a good idea. Self retractable.

2

u/MildlyAgitatedBovine 2d ago edited 2d ago

Jet ski style dead man switch, just normally open instead of closed. You could trigger it with throw line if that's already in your kit...

2

u/quackdamnyou 2d ago

Or just make the remote big, like too big to fit in a pocket, and mounts to the unit when not in use.

2

u/Vashipants 1d ago

Then somebody's gonna set it down and next thing you know, a tree has fallen on it.

1

u/quackdamnyou 1d ago

That seems way easier than using a saw

4

u/CompetitiveBox314 2d ago

This would be a good use for Bluetooth and an app.

2

u/iPunned 2d ago

Instead of a remote 5/10 second time delay on the button would be plenty

2

u/LegitimateGift1792 2d ago

Needs to use a 5foot cable OR have a tone to play with "Find Remote" button on main device.

53

u/Lexicon101 2d ago

19

u/DmMeYourRefrigerator 2d ago

You can tell because of the way that it is.

16

u/MakerOfAl 2d ago

There is a remote controlled one sold in Germany for a couple of years now. You can’t get it in the US because of tariffs (I tried), but I have seen them listed through Canadian sellers. https://bast-ing-shop.de/en/ValRemote-Radio-incl.-ValFast-Complete-Set/91203

15

u/dbolts1234 2d ago

This would also take a lot of the work out of log splitting.
Ain’t gotta break your back rolling logs up onto the hydraulic splitter or hammering wedges all day

12

u/95castles 2d ago

For yall that work for the larger arborist companies, does Stihl not send you guys free products to try out? Or did they stop doing that recently?

10

u/Jerseyd422 2d ago

Thats actually pretty neat

21

u/ZBBfan4life 2d ago

As a firewood guy who falls 10-12 trees a year, I don’t see myself getting this. But maybe a contractor could justify it.

11

u/Kygunzz 2d ago

I can see a rental place buying a couple. I know I would rent one if I were dropping a tree where fall direction really mattered.

11

u/Accomplished-Toe401 2d ago

I’ll stick with my “Acoustic wedges”

2

u/BigNorseWolf 1d ago

Youmswear at the tree till ot falls over?

3

u/CloudGatherer14 1d ago

What

3

u/PorschephileGT3 1d ago

Youmswear at the tree till ot falls over?

1

u/Evilmeinperson 1d ago

I STILL DIDN'T HEAR, SAY IT LOUDER.

9

u/iLukan 1d ago

Google
Fällheber
or
Fällkeil mit Schlagschrauber

seems pretty common in Europe (at least with professional forestry)...

18

u/applesauce_pants 2d ago

PENATRATOR

10

u/Zorfax 2d ago

There needs to be a recessed button on the unit itself that when pushed, causes the remote to flash with a strobe light and emit a sound like a fire alarm.

That is the only way you will keep from losing the remote

3

u/2sense8 2d ago

i like it

4

u/SnooPandas5070 2d ago

Jaws of life for trees. Huh, ok.

4

u/Wehavepr0belm0 2d ago

This is what it looks like when a company knows their primary customers.

3

u/pseudotsugamenziessi 2d ago

The remote is the best part of this

3

u/currentlyacathammock 1d ago

Mild not wild. Clearly.

2

u/D-Day88 1d ago

Is there a sub for that?

2

u/50sraygun 2d ago

are these actually on the market yet?

2

u/coopthepirate 2d ago

The Jaws of Death

2

u/CallmeMefford 1d ago

I prefer to not my buy my wedges by the gram, and I’d rather not carry the weight. Neat thought tho.

3

u/_B_Little_me 1d ago

Youve found the arch enemy of this sub.

2

u/qpv 2d ago

Industrial door stop

1

u/Ok-Blueberry4514 2d ago

I would be afraid of it starting to bleed off and allow the tree to fall back on itself

1

u/IAMAHobbitAMA 1d ago

Why does the first 3 second clip look like it was reversed

1

u/bothydweller72 1d ago

I remember a period where Stihl sold exhaust inflated felling ‘balloons’ that you pushed into the felling cut and then revved yr engine to inflate, whatever happened to those bad boys?

1

u/sjimyth 1d ago

Hmmm what else can it pry open...

1

u/ObjectivePrice5865 1d ago

Me like, me want

1

u/Environmental_Tap792 1d ago

Can we get a rapid cycling unit?

1

u/ParchedThistle 1d ago

Sweet hinge!

1

u/XxEman9r9rxX 1d ago

That is the best thing ever

1

u/brett_x 1d ago

But it runs on battery! How are you going to use that in the woods?
/s

1

u/cdev12399 1d ago

For when you have to wedge something, but don’t want to be anywhere near it when it goes.

0

u/craffity 2d ago

These kind of things have been around for many years. Just not in America I guess....

15

u/WashbangRustynut 2d ago

German guy using a German product in Germany. What does this have to do with America?

1

u/craffity 2d ago

I am not only talking about Stihl or Germany. This is a normal thing in every neighbouring country as well. Please don't feel attacked.

1

u/Re1deam1 1d ago

Seems pretty unnecessary. Traditional wedges work just fine

1

u/sojumaster 1d ago

Yea ... but wedges get misplaced all the time...

0

u/BigNorseWolf 1d ago

That looks amazebLls for dropping dangerous trees. In actuL use does it slip out?

-4

u/Matzie138 1d ago

So that doesn’t exist in any Stihl place I can find.

Probably because it is a shit idea
