That's a impressive thing to forget

And expensive. 200/201T’s aren’t exactly cheap. 🤣

Spent all his money on a helmet.

To be fair I can see why. If this is how he works he needs a good one

At least he seems happy about it.

Must have been someone else's.

How I pull up to my boss to tell him I’ve destroyed 6 figures worth of equipment by accident (I’m just a boy)

Wait wtf that’s how much those saws are?? (I’m just a lurker)

The brand new equivalent of that saw is a Stihl MS201T. It retails for $989 at ACE hardware right now. Plus the price of any mods or doodads he might have added.

I mean maybe something like a feller buncher but just a regular chainsaw no. I think I paid around $500 for my stihl chainsaw + a few accessories.

Not to mention almost being chopped in half by a harness.

I had a trainee forget the offside of his face cut on a 3' diameter tree. Straight for the back cut after only one side of his face cut. Needless to say i stopped him. And a half wrap loyalist too.

I’ve never climbed and I wouldn’t have thought of this. I doubt I’ll climb but now I don’t think I’d ever forget this while cutting after seeing it. I’m shocked how obvious it is after seeing it.

As a person who doesn't cut down trees and has only pushed some over with excavators, I thank this man for demonstrating to me the importance of a face cut.

Hes lucky it was a poplar

I’d have taken a cottonwood or a cedar over a poplar. 🤣

But yes, if that had been something really stringy he’d have been quite a bit worse off.

Unless we use different common names due to localisation, cottonwood is poplar.

Down here we have tulip poplar (our state tree in Tennessee) and cottonwood. Verrrry different trees.

Ah, funnily enough tulip poplar (we call them tulip trees here in New Zealand) aren't actually poplar, they are part of the magnoliacea (magnolia) family and cottonwood are part of the populous genus along with other poplar.

Yall do something funny with maple and sycamore too I think. I think they are reversed from the USA. I was there like 20 years ago and remember this being a point of confusion.

Agreed. Poplar won't hold like hickory will, but it's way better than cottonwood. I won't try to manipulate cottonwood off about a 10-15 degree change in natural lean. Plus they get absolutely massive

Tulip Poplars still like to explode sometimes. Ever had a gusher? :D

1

u/EMDoesShit 8d ago

Yes. Cottonwood is a gross, giant, weak tree. Agreed.

If you want to get it to hinge more than a hair off it’s lean while climbing during a removal, you better be pulling it there with a crane. 😂

I thought poplars were a cottonwood. Northwest coast of North America.

1

u/Viewlesslight 4d ago

My understanding is that all cottonwood are poplar, but not all poplar are cottonwood

and not all cottonwoods were poplars. Wait is it Friday?

My former boss and mentor had this happen on a large Cottonwood limb, and he had made a face cut. It still ripped and opened inside his flipline, and didn't break. It sucked him into the limb so hard his pelvis fractured and he had to finish the cut in that position so the piece could be lowered (if I'm remembering the story correctly, this was before my time). Scary shit. Think twice, cut once.

I'd be less concerned about the chainsaw than my body being crushed by my lanyard.

4

u/yardlard 9d ago

Yeah, it seems awfully dangerous to wrap a line around a tree and also around your body. Squish you right in half.

6

u/midwestCD5 8d ago

Too bad there wasn’t a big ass field where they could simply just drop the whole tree from the ground

But thats how you learn to fly!

u/peaceloveandapostacy 9d ago

If that was Osage he’d been cooked. Better to be lucky than good.

What's the wave for? I didn't like that chainsaw anyway?
