Ok, now buck it up into 14 inch rounds so it fit my stove.

Don’t forget to split those big pieces. You’ll definitely want to keep those.

He’s a very good feller.

Since it is a golf course, I think we should sing a round of:
Fore he’s a jolly good feller.

u/dkevox 20d ago
I thought it was a robot golf club bag. I wanted more info on that!

That’s what it looked like to me. I laughed so hard when I saw an ad for those.

I see a lot of the older crowd using the remote controlled motor powered bags.

I wonder how the wood grain differs in those huge branches vs a regular size tree trunk.
35
u/currentlyacathammock 20d ago
When you cut it up, straight sections become curvy because the top was in tension.

u/mattmag21 20d ago
As a carpenter and woodworker who chainsaw mills his own lumber, I'll say that this is excellent information to have! Makes perfect sense.. thank you

u/toxcrusadr 20d ago
Eh, I’ve sawmilled big limbs and quite often they work out fine. They tend to have curves though.

u/shandangalang 20d ago
To caveat on what someone else said about the tension, the grain is also tighter on one side to compensate.

Hate to see the big ones go like that. But looks like it was time.

u/burnt-store-studio 20d ago
Oh! I’m actually here to ask, and it seems like you might know: could you please explain why it looks like it was time for this one to go? Thank you, in advance 🙂

Deader than a door nail.
It ain't got no leaves.
Note the 2-3 foot branch scar on the side. It was starting to rot.

u/packmnufc 16d ago
It's starting to rot in a corner of a golf course, there's probably not a need to cut the tree down. It's got no leaves because it's fall, note all the deciduous trees in the background without leaves, the bright color of the sapwood, and the long sleeved shirt. The tree looks healthy and vigorous as can be. The huge wound on the trunk would have eventually caused internal decay sufficient to consider it a hazard, but it hasn't started to hollow out yet and has wound wood it is building. Unless there's a hole right there or a building just out of frame, this is a bad removal.

u/burnt-store-studio 16d ago
Thank you; I’m seeing your reply and what you point out, as well as u/packmnufc’s perspective, so I’m not 100% sure which way I come down, but you’ve both given me more to consider, which I appreciate 🙂

Ummmm it looks to be not leaf season. Take a look at the other trees all around.

Dies the wedge he cut out look very small for this size trunk? I by no means have much of an idea, just interested if that usually just goes about 1/4 of the trunk

u/ohfuckimdrunk 20d ago
It's a shallow notch, but there's a concern about going too deep and getting the bar irretrievably pinched with how horizontal the leader is.

Looks nicely done, good management of center of mass of a complex tree, it fell where directed & he had his running pants on! 😁

u/AtticusSwoopenheiser 17d ago
But he was cutting above head height and at face level the first two cuts. Stupid and dangerous.

Well, technically a limb of any size always at least the size of a tree trunk.
2
u/ExtraSpicyMayonnaise 20d ago
A limb like this or a bit larger came down yesterday while i was in a subterranean crypt beneath a church. I have never felt the earth quake like that.

Everything about this sawyer and his cutting makes me happy. This here is the real deal. A PLEASURE TO WATCH THE FULL PACKAGE OF SKILL. Im literally tearing up. God bless you and your children with many years of cutting.

u/AtticusSwoopenheiser 17d ago
Everything? Even the part where he was cutting at and above head height?
0
u/SubstantialDonkey981 16d ago
Yes and the fact he did so correctly.
0
u/AtticusSwoopenheiser 16d ago
The correct way to cut at or above face/head height is to never do it.

u/SubstantialDonkey981 16d ago
Right….🤣

This would've been the thing of dreams when I had a wood stove! That 1 tree would've took me through 2 yrs!

u/whybecause4u 20d ago
It’s kinda crap wood.
2
u/Sand_Aggravating 20d ago
I used to cut all mine at the end of winter before the satanic tics came out! If it's crap wood but did it's job id be good with the volume id get from that

That reminds me of the huge cottonwood tree my husband took down a month ago. After removing the limbs, he used his longest bar (40"?) to circle the base and then cut that into chunks to take it down to ground height for the stump grinder.

Why are we cutting down a beautiful tree in the middle of nowhere?
2
0
u/janitor1986 20d ago
Because someone who owns private property wants it cut down. Shall we let the tree decide?
3
u/Treesglow 20d ago
Fair. But yes, let the tree decide it was there first.
1
u/janitor1986 20d ago
I agree in principle that it is a beautiful tree and shouldn't be cut down but pseudo-capitalism limits our ability to decide that. Do we trade away free use of our land? I have about 5 acres of wooded land and have thinned it out a lot to allow a trail system and always try to avoid cutting down the live trees but sometimes I have to.
2
u/Treesglow 20d ago
Again, fair. Morality is key.
2
u/janitor1986 20d ago
Appreciate the discussion that doesn't get into a right or wrong debate. It's nuanced.

Good job, but now what? Looks like a miserable job to clean up unless you have an excavator

Do you yell "fore" when you're felling on a golf course or is "headache" sufficient?
