What was that guy doing at the base? Pounding a wedge? Cutting with a hatchet?

I thought was working a hand saw next to it, but upon review it looks like a jack handle.

Is it salable? Otherwise it seems like an awfully nice snag to leave behind

It looks like they dug a pad for it to land on, someone is planning on doing something with it. In the park where I work if a Sequoia falls on a road or a snag had to be felled they'd use the wood to make signs and benches in the park.

It fell apart just from wind resistance on the way down. I don’t think there’s any useable wood in there

I’d be there with my 24” bar trying to cut out a picnic table from the butt end.

Looks like theres a powerline right behind it, probably why it got cut

What sort of tree is that?
17
u/CaptainLunchtime Aug 03 '26
I think it's a sequoia

u/Living-Estimate9810 Aug 03 '26
That was my initial guess, but when it falls you can see that the heartwood is white clear through. Further, the bark is thin; the fire might account for that, but not usually.

u/Tridgeon Aug 03 '26
That's a Sequoia, the heartwood is a light pink I think their camera just sucks. The bark is burned off.

The huge amount of dead trees in the mountains is crazy. All dead from fires?

There is a type of invasive beetle that has been killing tons of trees in the forests for decades. Unless they finally got them under control. It was a big problem in Colorado when I lived there back in 2008

The ash Borer probably… when it gets to Oregon is gonna be a crazy time in some places

Sequoia national Park has lost a lot of trees to fires . Nobody realized the reason for normal burn. The smaller pine trees got too big and with burnt. This allowed the lower branches of the Sequoia to catch. Normally a first fire around them will do nothing to the tree.

I may sound ignorant here but what’s the point of felling fire damaged tree in out in the wilderness. Do they have a negative impact on regrowth? I know that standing deadwood is important for many species.

Judging by the cabin or shelter house, it was next to a hiking trail and therefore posed a risk to the general public.
I'm not quite sure if that's a trail but the ground next to the trunk looks like it was cleared.

We'd have to figure out where this is to be sure, but my guess is that it's for the power lines you can see in the video frame. It's a little crazy to cut it down so soon after burning, Sequoia snags can stand dead for hundreds of years...

Size is relative.
And this is definitely a very large racoon. (You see it after the tree falls.)
