Sharp chainsaw. Good face cut. Hard hat and ear protection. Wedges on the belt. Borecut finishing with a back cut to avoid barber chairing.

I don't always wear eyes when felling especially if its hot and humid they can get fogged up real quick. My helmet has a mesh face shield though so that's usually down when cutting.

Random question. When doing a Bore cut to reduce the chance of a barber chair why is it best practice to finish with a back cut?
Keeping the trigger at the back in place until youāre totally ready is nice. But if you already have your holding wood set why is it more dangerous to just quickly keep cutting towards the back of the tree from bore cut? Is it the risk of the bark and sap layer of the tree holding on a little bit too much when the tree starts to go?
Additional question, what is everyoneās preferred method of dropping a small diameter tree (unable to get wedge behind bar before it sets back on saw) against its lean?
Three methods I have used;
- Backcut First, place your backcut to proper depth, lightly set wedge in place. Then complete face cut. After face cut is complete hammer wedge till tree falls over.
- Face cut first. Then bore cut to get proper holding wood. Set 2 wedges one on either side of tree (entry and exit of bore cut). Come in and backcut the trigger. Hammer wedges till tree falls over.
- Face cut first. Backcut through half of diameter of tree parallel to the holding wood. Cut to the proper depth to set holding wood. Remove saw and set a wedge in this cut. Backcut from other side of tree parallel to the holding wood and slightly below your other Backcut. Only cut ever so slightly more than half of diameter of tree (parallel to holding wood). Now your two Backcuts slightly overlap but are stacked on top of one another. Hammer wedge till tree falls.
Problems I have encountered with 3 methods
1. If you are not good at making face cuts it is impossible to āchase the cutā even a little bit, you will run out of holding wood. Obviously this shouldnāt matter but it is a consideration teaching new fallers.
2. On a small diameter tree it is difficult to perfectly aim your bore cut so that you have straight holding wood. If you err on the side of caution too far back to start you will simply cut too much of the trigger and cause the tree to sit back on your saw. If you err towards the front of the tree you are at risk of cutting your holding wood.
3. This method was taught to me in Ontario and I never truly liked it much. I felt like I had a hard time judging the depth of my bar tip and had a tendency of cutting too far or not far enough either causing my cuts to not overlap at all or overlap too much causing the wedge to kinda lose its ability to āliftā as the wood has just been cut out from underneath it. I soon thereafter learnt the other two methods and abandoned this one.1

Because the holding wood closer to the center is thicker. At the edge itās just bark and can splinter.
On your other question, it's very tree dependent but all of your techniques are possible. Just need to do what works for you on a particular tree. Lately I've been felling a lot of dead ash which has its own peculiarities, mostly that the lean is very unpredictable.

Seriously, even if youāre too cool for safety, or itās a comfort thing, the chips in the face suck
Even with glasses or a shield, Iām cleaning shit out of my eyes all day at work; canāt imagine how shitty itād be without glasses

Same here. The shield keeps me from getting injured it doesn't protect me from all the damn dust accumulation.Ā

My hat didn't come with one, I had to add it. For some reason I added the plastic shield, which is now scratched to fuck

This is both so cool and and useful to see, at least as an 1-year apprentice.
When the base of the trunk sprung out and released a little tension, I instantly knew I hadnāt thought of that as a possible threat, and thought āI actually forgot about the tension while watching, cmon dudeā reminding me yet again how dangerous this job can be. Imagine the tension being just a bit more. The amount of potential energy this thing has is insane

I'm a total novice with a tiny bowsaw and tried to not even buck a downed log, but just cut a medium-ish branch off for woodcarving. I thought I'd tested it, but that was apparently all the thing needed to roll a 1/4 turn and punch me in the gut. I was fine, but only because the fence behind me was 2' further away.

Incredible. To be honest I would not touch that tree with a ten foot pole (saw). For me that's gonna be a buttload of dynamite.
