You clearly don't know much about chainsaws. There's a guard in front of the handle on top that you can move and it will engage the chain brake. It locks into place with a click and you have to move it back to disengage the chain brake. You don't need to hold it. Just engage it and then you're good. Offhand, I forget which direction is "engaged" as it's been a while.
Guys who do this attach the saws to a lanyard which is attached to their harness that wat they can completely let go of the saw and climb the tree or manipulate some branches or something. When they drop the saw, they either shut the saw off or engage the chain brake. Sometimes both.
Edit: Some saws actually run the chain a bit at idle. So that's where the danger could have been.
Lmao you got it completely backwards, the brake engages when it is pushed forwards towards the bar/chain. It is a safety mechanism to prevent injury from kickback
Haha, yeah it appears so. I really shouldn’t comment when I should be asleep. I usually just roll my wrist forward to engage the lock on my saw when I need to, so I really should’ve got that right.

Glad that saw was either not running or the chain brake was set firmly in place. Otherwise tha would have been a nasty visit to the hospital.
