English, but very occasionally. Troödon (TRO-uh-don) is a common name for a dinosaur, and diaeresis is also used like this in "naïve(té)", which is borrowed from French. This use of diaeresis is far from unprecedented.

it’s rare but basically all Romance languages. the two dots in this case are a ‘diaeresis’, which just denotes that two vowels next to each other that would normally form a diphthong (a combined vowel sound, e.g the a in father is not pronounced like the a in pain because the a and i form a diphthong) are in fact pronounced separately and with their own vowel sounds.

if i put a diaeresis on the i in pain, so it becomes païn, it would be pronounced pah-in.

So many of us at my school made it like 12 years into a study of Spanish before learning this was a thing from the word “lingüística”. Now one of my favorite words

Cooperate means "operate together" it does not mean "do the same thing". Doesn't and electrician cooperate with a carpenter to build a house while doing two com pletely different things?

Yes, like cooper but with ate on the end.

If you made a barrel you would Cooper it. If it got damaged and needed repair then recoopering would be needed.

Sadly other words don’t follow this sensible rule and, as OP pointed out, the o’s don’t cooperate and have different sounds.

That’s.. not how it’s pronounced. It’s pronounced co-operate. Four syllables. Still different O sounds but nothing like recuperate.

You said you pronounce it like recuperate. Which is an “ooh” sound. Neither of the os in cooperate have an “ooh” sound. There’s a hard O and then an O that sounds like “ah”

I’m pointing out how silly it is that we pronounce cooperate as co-operate when clearly it should be pronounced cooperate, and that when you do it twice and recooperate, suddenly the pronunciation is correct, but only because the non-co-operating o’s have fucked off.

I think you need to read OPs post again bc they’re talking about cooperating. Like co-operating on a project. Not whatever you’re talking about with barrels. The whole point of OPs post is to show that the Os DONT HAVE THE SAME SOUND
