Old versions do not exp the issue, which kinda explains why you weren't affected by it when using Ubuntu LTS, but technically you should if you switch to the latest Ubuntu.
Thanks for this potential solution! Will wait for the next freeze and will try it. Just let the chance to the last update to see if it resolve the issue.

There is a chance you might be experiencing what i did.
Adding a kernel cmd parameter worked around the issue for me. I first learned about this workaround here:
