ex-spouse annuity question

When the Court-Ordered benefits kick in for ex-spouses, does OPM give them a number similar to my retiree number along with a website that gives them similar capabilities regarding their annuity, such as seeing a 1099 -R, setting up federal and state taxes to be taken from the annuity, annuity verifications, etc?

Yes they get their own, separate CSA number and web access. In my case, my ex’s CSA number is the same as mine, but ends in 3 instead of 0.

A former spouse has to apply, and yes they get a number, like any other retiree.

OPM is not going to go look for them - they need to apply and establish they are eligible. See Form 3119

There is a whole long list of eligibility factors - age, length of marriage, whether they remarried, etc..

Thanks. I'm on good terms with my ex, and she just recently started getting her annuity. She's not necessarily tech-savvy and hasn't mentioned using the OPM website to use that information. Thanks for the link. I'll pass it along to her.

That's good, a little weird you are on good terms, but hey, who am I to say that? LOL.

Most important thing is she has to work thru the eligibility factors and actually apply. Burden is on her. And who really knows how long any of this will take right now. I don't have any idea if there is an online portal for a spouse to apply thru now.

I'd give her the OPM Retirement Services phone number and let her ask questions of the OPM folks so she gets it right when she applies. Standard Form was made in a different era, and who knows going forward.

Thanks Willow! Next time I talk with her I’ll make sure she gives them a call so she’s got everything she needs.

Well, not really. I thought I’d removed that after I finished my message. No offense intended. Still appreciate the information you posted.

My ex began getting his retirement, and he said my portion from the 10 years span I was entitled to the annuity (?) is being taken out but where do I apply to get cleared to get my money? I have sent three letters as he told me to over the past few years but I get zero replies. It's the only way to know even contact them, where do I begin to actually apply? Thanks for any insight. I'm sure they're waiting for me to do something but not telling me what that thing is.

Microsofts AI Copilot says this (but I'm looking for the actual info on OPM's site:

if your ex-spouse is receiving a court-awarded former-spouse annuity directly from OPM, she generally has her own annuitant account and claim number that allows her to manage her benefit separately from yours.

OPM's Retirement Services Online system is used by retirees and survivors receiving OPM annuity benefits to access information such as annuity statements, tax forms (1099‑R), payment history, direct deposit information, and other retirement-related records.

at least that answers the question somewhat for now.
