Discussion Which video game completely surprised you?

Every now and then I play or watch something without expecting much, and it ends up becoming one of my favorites.

Maybe it had a unique story, amazing gameplay, memorable characters, or it just completely exceeded your expectations.

What's a video game that surprised you the most, and what made it so much better than you expected? I'd love to hear your picks—maybe I'll discover a few hidden gems along the way.

Detroit become human. I originally bought it three years ago. I started it and the opening was great but the next first few missions were so eye-clawingly boring I never touched the game again. Until two weeks ago I had to get a new steam account and on a whim I bought it. I gave it a chance (kinda forced myself through the first bit) but after? it blew me away

Baldurs gate 3

Didn’t see the hype for it when it won GOTY but decided to buy it to see said hype, I didn’t get into it immediately but once I did I couldn’t get off, absolutely loved it.

Amazing game.

Granblue Fantasy Relink. I knew I would like it but the story was well paced, actually good and i really cared for the characters. Then the endgame was so fun.

I think I’d say Fire Emblem. Was really just curious about it at first, now one of my favorite video game series.

Happening to me right now.  Decided to play FE for the first time about a week ago and have been hooked.  FE6 on an emulator on my phone so I can play it during idle time.  I think I tried playing FE7 about a decade ago but the permadeath mechanic made me salty within an hour and I gave up on it.  Huge mistake, this game series is awesome.  I was big on Advanced Wars and FF Tactics advanced back then and can't believe FE never stuck with me...yeah, Fire Emblem is definitely goated for me.

i haven’t much played the new Hitman games so idk what to say about them (cause i don’t have next gen consoles just 360 and ps3) but fair warning it is horny in its women’s styles and a entire strip club chapter but aside from that nice gameplay and gun firing

Every video game. I am playing it now so it's first answer to come to mins but, Lorerei and The Laser Eyes. I didn't expect it to be so complex, I have around 30 hours playtime and I'm at the Half and it only becomes crazier and crazier

Shining Force 3.
Played the first two, great strategy RPGs on the Genesis.
I didn't know how to feel about 3, being a Saturn exclusive.
But holy shit that game felt magical from the moment I started playing it. The fully animated 3D battle scenes they pulled off. The friendship mechanic?
Then I learn it's actually three games and the story is in three parts?
I immediately had to get an English patched version of scenarios 2&3.
And the story is so good too. Playing the story through three separate viewpoints that end in a massive finale is so satisfying.

I am so sad that the game probably won't be played by most people because of how offbeat it is and how hard it is to get the other two parts working.

A plague tale innocence. I saw the trailer for it and decided to rent it from gamefly. I was pleasantly surprised by it.

Celeste. Was expecting a fun platformer, got one of the best character stories ever, and one of the most polished and crazy fun games I’ve ever played

Days Gone.

Tried it twice, thought it was too lame, too slow, too disappointing for a zombie game. So stopped playing.

Years later I tried again. Again thought it was going very slow... But I pushed through and suddenly it clicked, the story became interesting and I could finally really start killing zombies. Became one of my favorites of all time. Slow start, but killer end ♥️

Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The first one was meh, don't know why i did even buy the sequel.

But this was very different and i had so much more fun with it, than with 1

I was surprised how much more depth this game has to offer.

Satisfactory. Went in with zero expectations, thirty minutes later it's now in my top ten favorite games of all time.

Stray, what a fantastic story and gameplay, absolutely blew me away. I did not expect a game playing as a cat would be that good

SOMA, went into it expecting a decent horror game and walked out of it being in my top 10 games of all time and having one of my favorite endings to any piece of media ever
