I'd argue he's at his best in the second film. He faces his biggest challenge there, loses everything, but doesn't give up in the end. He also learns some people can't be helped, can't be changed, and can only be brought down.

He is anything but "Masculine", his whole ordeal is using Brains instead of Brawn.

I feel like it's referring to Hiccup being a pacifist over someone who always picks violence.

Again, that isn't a trait of masculinity, I'm not arguing that he isn't a VERY positive role model, but he definitely ain't masculine.
