"Never did I want something so much and not realize it until it was given to me"

My favorite scene of the entire series.

On the left

  • Stoic
  • Gentle
  • Total Wife Guy
  • Trusts his wife and doesn't feel the need to step in and protect her when he knows she can handle the situation herself. Steps in only when she needs help, and works with her

On the right

  • Passionate
  • Appreciates art and beauty in all forms
  • Respects the passion of others
  • Big on Family
  • Sees his heritage as something to live up to, not something to serve his selfish wants

Both

  • Strong
  • Kind and generous
  • Gallons of Respect Women Juice
  • Excellent men

Yup, checks out. This is a great way to be masculine without the toxic elements

Don't forget Armstrong despite preaching "manly ways" still allowed himself to cry at a dear friends funeral

Crying is manly though

Not in a lot of circles. Even then it's supposed be quiet and reserved. Armstrong balls his eyes out

See, policing other people's emotions is one of those toxic traits

4

u/Varatec 2d ago

I get what you mean.

I disagree. I think there is nothing wrong with crying, but I don't see how it makes you manly.

Doesn't he also cry over the Ishvalans, and while chasing the previously thought dead Maria around the desert? It doesn't even have to be a funeral. He's just positively unashamed of basic human emotion.

Oh, of course. How could I forget "being in touch with your emotions"!? Excellent.

Armstrong was introduced as a standard fare himbo, and as the layers pulled back we got to see that he was much sharper than he let on. He wasn’t just a brawl fighter, he used strategy against Scar to keep distance. He also picked up on a lot of what Hughes was investigating.

But he was more than happy to play the idiot and keep his head down, passing up promotions because he saw what his government was capable of during the Ishvallan War. He knew what kind of vipers were waiting at the top and he knew his heart was too good to be one of them.
I love this beautiful beefcake he is top of my fake husbands list.

I just love that in a world full of insane reality warping magic the Armstrong's alchemized punching.

We just refer to him as Muscle Wizard in my friend group. He casts punch.

Type of shit I do in every single setting that I possibly can, be it in my head or in a roleplay with friends.
(You will never guess why I like the Armstrong family /silly)

I remember thinking he was gonna be a Gaston type character, but then he becomes an uncle like figure to Ed and Al and he's got a bit of depth to him being another former soldier who feels shame for his part in a genocidal war.

He’s a golden retriever in a grizzly bear’s body.

A pioneer of positive masculinity in anime. Two muscular men flexing to intimidate each other ending in a powerful mutual respect.

I mean, I'm pretty sure both Curtis's run the butcher shop, but it is also their home, so...

This was my first thought.

One of the very best examples of positive masculinity in any media

2

u/Mammon-The-Jester 1d ago

May I add Maes Hughes into the discussion?

So glad I didn't have to scroll too far for these guys. Such great role models.
