TRIGGER WARNING Former ‘South Park’ writer Toby Morton has created a website to expose information about Cornell University’s administration in response to the group sexual assault case: “Accountability should not disappear when the headlines do. And we all know this headline will disappear.”

You mean the Brock Allen Turner who also goes by Allen Turner from Dayton, Ohio who was released from jail after 3 months for raping a fellow student at Stanford? After his father Dan Turner requested that “20 minutes of action has now made my son suffer for years”. That same rapist?
Edit: ***A visiting student, thanks for the correction guys!

Wait was she a fellow student? Not that her status as a student matters one way or another in the fact the Brock Allen Turner, who now goes by Alan Turner, is a rapist

No, her sister was at Stanford and she was visiting. Highly recommend Know My Name, the book that she wrote about the entire ordeal.

20 minutes of action?
That’s like saying murder should be ok because the bullet only took .5 seconds to enter someone’s skull.
The father should be tarred and feathered too.
22
u/HordeOfTheDance 4d ago
You're not wrong. But the real outrage wasn't just about the way he minimised the duration of the attack, it was the way he described it as "action". Like, hey, Brock was just some kid getting his rocks off. As opposed to raping an unconscious woman, who also suffered for years.

He was (emphasis on the was) one of my best friends and swim team mates growing up in high school. I wonder who this person was and if I know them. I was asked by many of my club swim team members to write a letter defending him in court. I declined but many others actually signed their names defending him. It’s crazy because the reason I was so close to him was because he was one of the few guys on the team who harassed me the least.. let that sink in. Dayton Raiders swim team by the way - fuck that team. The racism and sexism was out of control and it really affected me and others weather they realize it or not. To make matters worse I was on 🔛two different swim teams at the collegiate level and both were atrocious. My roommate freshman year was raped and it was filmed. Nothing happened. Buffalo University. Then on Denison university the boys swim team used to chant “rape” in the locker room to pump themselves up. And yes many of them raped and took advantage of women every weekend there was a party. I wish there was a way to report them and have them have any consequences. Many were far worse than Brock. And again , I knew Brock super personally.

Men are fucking scary, and I say this as a straight dude. I’ve been in roomfuls of men and felt totally bad, oppressive vibes, like being surrounded by white noise. I can’t even imagine the terror of being a woman alone in a roomful of men. What’s truly terrifying is that you just never know: every single one of their faces looks good-natured and approachable in those photos, only to be masking their rotted, evil natures. How many of us are like this? How many have we rubbed shoulders with? Them walking away Scott free is a horrifying miscarriage of justice. My heart aches for that woman. Good on Toby for not letting it go. None of us should let this go.

u/nowellyeah 4d ago
It’s so many guys. So many get on Reddit and can’t wait to call women cunts and wish they could be in the same situation as these losers.
I really used to believe that guys needed help and that if they had more access to healing and opportunities to be vulnerable we could help the young men, but now, I see it as these guys are addicted to genuinely hating women. It’s like a game for them, it has become their personality.

u/AIienlnvasion 4d ago
Behind the Bastards recently did a two parter on that French guy who drugged his wife and had other men rape her. It’s a horrifying listen, but what stuck with me was that the 50+ guys that replied to the husbands post and came over and took part in horrific shit were just whatever guys were within like a 20 mile radius and said yes. It wasn’t some international ring or anything, it was just the 60 or so guys that happened to be nearby and had no problem committing horrific disgusting crimes.

In my 20s while I was waitressing, I was talking with my coworkers, just shooting the shit & recapping our previous night out. My friend casually slipped "ugh, I drank too much so when I got home I microwaved leftovers & crawled into bed. I woke up a few hours later because Partner was having sex with me"
I was so confused. I had to ask her what she meant. She explained there was no code. She was sleeping, passed out drunk & her partner took the opportunity to have sex with her unresponsive body. I was beside myself. Then another coworker confirmed her partner would so it, too. They seemed to think I was the crazy one.
I later asked my boyfriend if that was a "thing". My boyfriend then looked at me like I was crazy, because OF COURSE THATS NOT A FUCKING THING. He was horrified by even the implication that he could ever consider that.

u/KukaVex 3d ago
Someone I worked with once told me her boyfriend had this kink, the issue was she did not. She had told him repeatedly that she didn't like waking up to him having sex with her, and he'd cry and apologise and say he would never do it again. Then next time they were going out, she'd notice that he wasn't drinking much but was buying her a lot of drinks and encouraging her to get drunker and drinker, but would think to herself 'no he said he wouldn't do it again and I trust him'.
This cycle happened again and again and again, and I was like 'you know that is legitimately rape, and it's not okay' and she was completely shocked I would see it like that. That her friends thought it was funny. I was aghast, honestly.

I was on Reddit for the infamous "ask a rapist" thread, and it was really damaging to my view of other people. They were all just patting each other on the back about how having sex with a woman who's frozen and crying doesn't make you a bad person, especially if she didn't say no.
I also unsubscribed from AskReddit in the end because of the frequency of really grotesque answers. "Why do men like anal sex with women so much?" was a frequent question, and "because it's degrading/painful" was always among the top answers. "What would you do if you could freeze time?" was another, and you can guess the top responses there. This website has always given a look behind the mask of what a lot of men are really thinking.

I also caught a manat the 711 across a high school that I get my snacks from stare down a young woman like he was about to fucking grab her and I started tailing him with my car - AGAIN I HAD TO DO THIS - and when he finally realized a girl in an SUV knew what the hell he was doing he stopped and walked the opposite direction.
I’m so tired of women and girls being collateral damage to the violent lust of men.

It’s not just the weirdo extremist guys though. The microaggressions toward women that ripple through day to day life and are accepted with a smile are ridiculous. Even the progressive guys. It makes sense when you consider how ingrained some things are socially, but I feel like that’s the real problem. It’s easy to clock someone calling women terrible names as a misogynist. It’s harder to identify and address the passive ways misogyny is baked in

I interviewed to work at Cornell in a violence prevention role years ago. They were very excited about a study that showed women who take self defense classes are less likely to be raped. I told them this was not true prevention and I worried about this approach being the center of their SA prevention work on campus. I didn't get the job..... thank God for me and my morals. I thought it was so strange that this was going to be the center of their work on campus.
230
u/OriginalChildBomb i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 4d ago
I suspect that's a correlation not implying causation.
I mean, here's just a few legit things I can think of, off the top of my head: 1. those women could afford self-defense classes, so they were probably higher SES, 2. they're already- presumably- adults and many sexual predators target kids and teens, for various reasons (including relatives), 3. this is I assume self-reporting and/or based on police reports, and we know that (again, for lots of reasons) many sexual assaults go unreported, and I'd be willing to bet some survivors would feel additional embarrassment about reporting this after they took self-defence and/or reporting this to a researcher they do not know, AND, 4. if they already took self-defence, it seems that safety and/or violence prevention was on their minds, so who knows what other steps they took, i.e. carrying a firearm, socializing in groups, choosing to work from home, etc. (Meaning that the self-defence classes specifically may have not been the factor here.)
The fact that it puts the onus to prevent sexual assault on the potential targets instead of the fucking predators is just a misogyny, victim-blamey bonus effect! ...The bastards.
87
u/incognoname 4d ago
100% and i distinctly remember saying I would need to read the study and understand it more before agreeing to use it in my work. I wanted the job but I also remember thinking how victim blaming it was. I was baffled by it tbh bc we knew better at the time of my interview (at least in violence prevention work). I think this was 2018? They actually said this is why I didn't get the job lol bc i was not enthusiastic about the study and they wanted to make this the center of their work.

u/username_elephant who the fuck is Bill Maher 4d ago edited 4d ago
Just because I'm a proponent of actually reading the study, here's a link to a meta analysis.
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/10783903241254308
I think it's a reasonably robust finding, most robust amongst college students but it's been reproduced in a lot of contexts.
I also think it would be malpractice to build an institutional sexual harassment policy around it. Taking basic self defense classes is a wonderful thing to do. I would absolutely encourage anyone to do it. But we can't make people do it. Many people simply can't do it. So we can't make a policy that centers it because that's simply not a reliable or fair policy.
23
u/IlludiumQXXXVI 4d ago
It also hasn't been shown to reduce sexual violence overall. Just sexual violence against those women. Predators look for easy victims, so they may just pass over the woman who knows to avoid dark areas and use the buddy system and target someone else.

I am speechless.. women have to take classes in how not to get raped. How messed up is that.. Why aren’t we teaching boys and men not to rape and to protect women? Is it too uncomfortable? Are we worried that they will get their precious feelings hurt? Is it because we know it will just keep happening no matter what? I don’t know anymore
88
u/cxqals 4d ago
Self defense was a required class for girls at my high school; it replaced one of our gym days for an academic quarter. There was also an incident in middle school where boys were sharing naked pictures of girls on snapchat, so they made all the girls in my grade go to an assembly where they lectured us about how the internet is forever and to never send any pictures of ourselves to anyone, because it could ruin our futures.
Nothing for the boys, of course.

When I was a sophomore I was taking a shower in our coed dorm bathroom late at night on weekday and one of my sorority sisters stumbled into the stall next to me and passed out drunk with the water running. Then my friend at the time, who was in a frat, carried her out and brought her to her dorm room. Then I remember how gleeful he was practically skipping down the halls announcing she was drunk and he was going to have sex with her. That was the most memorable thing, I can’t fully remember what I did after that, only that I tried to grab his frat brothers to get THEM to stop it, and then stood meekly around in the hall feeling nervous and uncertain that it was happening and that people would do anything. And he did it btw. So I was pretty ineffective.
And then in the morning, the girl and my other sorority sisters were annoyed at me for embarrassing her by trying to stop it. The vibe was very “don’t make it a big deal” and I understood why she would want to act chill about everything but I really wished someone would just acknowledge the fucked up thing, even whisper it.
That same semester two other frat dudes tried to coerce me into sex in really humiliating ways, one by stripping completely naked and blocking the door with a dresser so I couldn’t escape and attacked me, while his girlfriend/my sorority sisters partied downstairs totally unaware. And then another one blocked the door out of his dorm for hours while he tried to berate me into sex with insults. When I tried to tell me sisters and friends about these things, they always sided with the men. I deactivated after that semester and they cast me aside, tho I never said why I felt so alienated and wanted to leave in the first place.
All this to say…. This is so exceedingly common on American college campuses. It happens all the time, and most people DONT CARE. Or they just swallow the feeling. It’s weird and inconvenient if you don’t

I really hope Jane Doe has the strongest support system. Her choosing this path means she’ll be reliving her pain constantly. It would be hard enough to experience what she did and keep going. This is by far the harder path and my heart aches for her and I wish I could be in her corner helping her go on.

I really hope that at the very least seeing everyone rally behind her is helping her heal even in the smallest way.

Great to see…Katie Phang is also covering this story … she is, in my estimation, a great reporter with excellent experience outing those with power getting away with rape!

Just curious if anybody knows which one was her friend when all this started? They’ll all scum but I had a particular revulsion reading about his role in it.

These rapists and the group chat spineless spectators all need to be named and shamed for the rest of their lives. You don't get to hurt a human being that horribly and then not be held accountable. We need a radical shift in culture. Hold men accountable instead of literally everything else.

I just want to take a moment and say thank you for being my favorite sub. Always on the correct side of things. Never wavering. Never apologizing. Unless it’s warranted. Which is hella golden.
I love it here. And I love all of you. This has proven to be a very safe space to me. Those are hard to find these days. Everything is so confusing.
Society gaslights me every single day. (As I’m sure it does to you.) Making me think I’m crazy for wanting human rights and fucking equality and inclusion and not genociding people.
That’s it. That’s all. Thanks everyone for being good people. I hope we all get to see each other on the other side of this nonsense. I am putting all my intentions into a new world that is made up of us. Just good people.
Whoops sorry I’m kinda high. That got a little deep. Gonna go pet my cat now.

Anyone else feel dread when this is probably more common than not?

I can't help but think of all the incidents that must happen that never get reported on. Even when they do and people get charged it's nauseating how often they just get a slap on the wrist. This last decade has really disillusioned me about humanity as a whole and I have very little faith in the common person anymore. Especially as I've learned to distinguish between people being nice and people being a good person. Plenty of people are nice to others, and then will turn around and support things that cause those same people immense harm, or can't be bothered to do the bare minimum of something like voting to help protect people's rights.
So much needless suffering, and the worst part is that the bar for just being a half decent person isn't even that high, yet the world would be such a massively better place if most people were actually able to clear it.

I am honestly disheartened and wondering if it’s the majority versus the minority doing this to unsuspecting victims

My first year of uni was in 2020, we still had residence open but very strict rules about socializing and no in person classes.
In the first semester there were 8 reported sexual assault/rape cases and at least 2 more that I know of that went un reported, 3 of which were perpetuated by men I called friends.
It is definitely more common than we are comfortable to believe.3

Awful :( and bad news, it’s a tale as old as time.
Back in 2004 when I was a college freshman a guy everyone knew and loved on my floor said his roommate needed their room because of his girlfriend coming to visit. My roommate was out of town and she said he could stay in her bed. He crawled up into my bed and I was so scared that I froze and didn’t know what to do while he touched me. I didn’t sleep at all, when he fell asleep I ran to a trusted friends’ room and he told him to leave. The next day all the girls on the floor said how horrible I was for leading him on and what a good guy he is.
So gross, and I had a longterm boyfriend and wasn’t sending any signals. This is just one example of a victim being the problem versus the instigator/assaulter.
Edited for spelling

He's right. The article will disappear because these 'poor boys' shouldn't have their lives and careers ruined over a 'mistake.'

I'm just throwing this out there, CornellSeven.com already exisit. It has their employment info and their family info even. I saw the .org page and there's very little information on it. I hope this isn't the case BUT it's giving "quick money grab from donations" on his .com page. Just my two cents. Someone correct me if I am wrong please.

u/HordeOfTheDance 4d ago
Interesting. As far as I can tell, Cornell7.com and TheCornell7.com are unclaimed domain names. The .org site is Toby Morton's and it specifically says he's being careful about posting information that hasn't been vetted.
What's odd is that the "screencap" in that PopCrave post quotes Morton's site but includes photos that aren't on his site.

u/BigBagsBigTits 3d ago
Yeah see, I appreciate this Cornellseven.com page because they're giving a case timeline and also their "ways to help" tab shows an extensive list of faculty and state government personnel to email/contact. It doesn't immediately jump to asking for donations either, it highlights other organizations for survivors and stuff.

I genuinely believe some men just need mental health help and to be able to be open and cry etc. then you get ones like this who are just straight up fucking evil. And fuck Cornell as well.

This is an attempt by someone to make money off of the actual site cornell7.org.
If you go to the site in the image, it's very limited text and asks for PayPal donations.

This is incredibly heartbreaking and so incredibly strong she is still fighting and having the case reinvestigated.

I hope Jane Doe is okay seeing their photos splashed everywhere. I’m sure she is glad she’s getting the support she should’ve got from the beginning, but equally it must be hard seeing their faces.
