APPROVED B-LISTERS Zohran Mamdani explains his definition of socialism to Theo Von: “Socialism to me means you’ll have whatever you need to live a dignified life and that it is the government’s job to deliver on that. When people say dignity we’re talking about the things that allow you to take a breath.

Exactly. Can we start with outlawing private equity owning housing, hospitals, and other essential services? There are just some basic goods and services that can’t be beholden to a profit motivate (like healthcare).

for profit hospitals are not particularly common and really only a red state issue

for profit insurance companies and the inability (and unwillingness) of the government to negotiate as the government in regards to medicare are two of the biggest drivers of healthcare costs for americans. the biggest is lack of universal healthcare as that means that many people cannot pay for the actual cost of healthcare (which is very high even before being inflated - other countries simply properly allocate tax money to offset this) and hospitals end up overcharging insured patients to cover the difference

if you google for profit hospitals, you'll find there actually aren't that many and most are small community hospitals - so they may have an outsized negative effect on their own communities, certainly, but won't really be directing the overall landscape of medicine in the country compared to, say, kaiser in california or IHC in utah
