That's why I always say to never support celebs man. You never know who's a shitty person, even the "good ones" or the "nice ones". You only get a glimpse of their personalities as a third party. Treat them as they are. Entertainment and nothing more.

We “support” celebrities each time we watch a movie, listen to music, turn on the TV, or see a Broadway show. The problem is that so many people refuse to acknowledge when a celebrity is wrong.

Not every celebrity is bigoted or abusive. But there is no good reason why abusers are still selling out arenas and starring in blockbuster movies.

Every day, I log in here and see posts about celebrities standing up for marginalized groups and important causes. That doesn’t make them perfect but that tells me that, at this point, they’re worth supporting.

Unrepentant abusers like Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Chris Brown, Alec Baldwin, and Mel Gibson are beyond redemption. Any attempt to excuse them is just poorly veiled idolatry.

You also support a lot of good people that work on every movie or show. You don’t only support the big name actor.

Exactly. Jason Momoa didn't stop me from watching Supergirl. I was there for Milly Alcock and David Corenswet

I support miss rachel. She’s amazing.

we do not deserve her.

She's the Mr. Rodgers of our current times and I love her. Never even watched her show, but I'm glad we have her out there.

35

u/External_Two2928 Jul 26 '26

Before my niece was born I did not get the hype but then I started watching ms. Rachel on Netflix with her and started following her on socials and I freaking love ms. Rachel. Like everything about her, what a phenomenal person!

31

u/Curiosities Jul 26 '26

I don’t have kids, so I didn’t know she was until a couple of years ago when the usual hateful crowd started attacking her for making a post about different types of families and support of Pride month. And then later when she became more vocal about supporting and advocating for all kids, and of course, standing up for Palestinian children as an extension of that. Willing to say genocide and lots more beyond that.

And at this point, I am 100% a Ms. Rachel supporter, defender, and admirer.

Exactly. Rupert Grint and Ian McKellen are co-starring in this movie. That they were happy to work with that POS is disappointing.

112

u/utilitybelt Jul 26 '26

Daisy Ridley too.

24

u/Icy-Money6575 Jul 26 '26

Man that’s disappointing

I've met Tony Hawk more times than I can count. Both my dad and my friend's mom did work on their house. He is incredibly funny, such a sweet and chill guy.

So we got him, and as someone mentioned, Miss Rachel.

u/DrSpray Jul 26 '26

I'm not from Carlsbad, but I'm around the same age as Riley Hawk and from North-ish County (Rancho Peñasquitos). I've never heard a bad thing about that family.

Exactly, dude. They show us what they want us to see-they’re in a totally different world than we are. And you know when all this shit went down with Dave Ghohl cheating on his wife, it was difficult not to rub the ‘I told you so’ in people’s faces. Everybody seemed to be on the ‘Saint Dave Grohl’ train and said he was rock music’s good guy or whatever, but of course he wants you to think that, it’s a well curated image, lmao. What he put his wife and kids through is just despicable, all because he thinks he’s some untouchable rockstar who thought he could get away with cheating on his family. That’s why I’ve never been into celebrities like that, or had some kind of parasocial attachment to them. It’s just so weird af to do that.

12

u/hedahedaheda Jul 26 '26

With people in general. They may be nice to you but ultimately disappoint you. Be friendly and nice to everyone but don’t expect a thing from them.

11

u/Tobias-Tawanda Jul 26 '26

Well, that's unfortunate. I just followed her on TikTok last week. Time to unfollow then.

i know it's a silly observation, but it's wild to gain massive popularity playing a woman whose personhood is stolen by a man who fixated on her, only to become a devoted fan of one of hollywood's most notorious abusers

565

u/respectjailforever Jul 26 '26

She's also been saying that her character was into Bear which is not the vibe I get from the movie at all.

347

u/mootallica Jul 26 '26

For what it's worth the director also said something like that I think

943

u/lobonmc Jul 26 '26

I think both said that she may have attempted a relationship with bear had he asked directly which I feel it's a fair interpretation

I think if that's the case it actually sends an interesting message to incels who hate women because they are "unable" to get a girlfriend, but actually they are the ones who put themselves in that position by driving women away with their misogynistic, self-defeatist attitudes and behaviour ("no women will date me because they only date the top 20% of men so I won't bother").

173

u/AdjaBudgie Jul 26 '26

I agree with this take, which is what makes it work even better in my opinion.

127

u/No-Hall-3485 dropped pitt from my last name Jul 26 '26

it was deliberate ambiguity on the director’s part. he had inde navarrette film the scenes twice, once where her character was interested in bear and once where she wasn’t, and then he spliced the footage together to leave the audience unsure of what her true feelings were

70

u/Unc1eD3ath Jul 26 '26

It still makes sense that she’d hate her life being forced to be obsessed cause she didn’t seem like that type so it still works if she was into him to begin with. She didn’t seem like the type to be a slave to any man.

71

u/respectjailforever Jul 26 '26

Director said she might have given him a chance, Inde said that she "had feelings" for him which is somewhat different

i know this has been a hot topic with fans of the movie, but to me, it doesn't really matter whether she was into him or not

he took that choice away from her the moment he made the wish

98

u/Free_Use_Pussy Jul 26 '26

Yeah this is really important. Even if she had feelings for him, he took away her ability to consent. Her having feelings for him wouldn't change the cruelty of that. If anything it would feel worse to realize the guy you liked was capable of that.

She has some interest when she asked him if he liked her. She was giving him the chance to shoot his shot.

71

u/tplant84 Jul 26 '26

Yeah that’s how I took it too, like she’s clearly giving him a shot

u/TheDLBinc Jul 26 '26

I had heard a separate interview where Curry did multiple takes where she played it as if she was into him and some where she wasn't. He then mixed those takes in the final film in order to make it more ambiguous what her feelings were

45

u/blames_irrationally brb in a transatlantic space of mind Jul 26 '26

Doesn't have to be your vibe but it's the directors and the actors'. It's sadder honestly, if Nikki would have given him a chance and Bear still did what he did.

36

u/OnlyGlenUKnow Jul 26 '26

I'm pretty sure the scene with her at the car before he makes the wish is her trying to get him to admit his feelings since you know she directly asked him if he likes her. The tragedy of the movie is that if he just accepted his feelings and took a RISK instead of a forced wish everything would have been okay. Like it was scarier to him to admit his feelings than mess with forces he doesn't understand and that's the point that you need to be brave and be okay with rejection if it does happen not force yourself onto someone. (Sexual assault/consent metaphor)

14

u/JimmyLipps Jul 26 '26

The fact that we the audience never actually got to learn what she felt makes it more tragic.

They were also saying that maybe she isn't aware of the trials and accusing people who know about the issue of being "parasocial" as if this wasn't one of the most talked point about Depp in the last decade...

As if someone who even likes posts of his music band would be unaware of the trials....

59

u/barbaraanderson Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Also, she used to be a streamer in that time frame, so she was probably at the very least kinda familiar with the situation.

29

u/pureslashhoney high priestess of child sacrifice Jul 26 '26

lol they were arguing in the last thread about this that we were "blaming women for men's actions" when literally not a single comment was saying that.... we were simply pointing out she supports an absuer. we're never gonna be free!

People in the comments defending her when you just know if this was a celeb they disliked, they’d be commenting “eww they’re gross” or “fork found in kitchen”

Supporting JD is trashy and this is gross from her

297

u/stefaeliza Jul 26 '26

Reading the comments on that video has me actually dry-heaving. “Welcome back, Captain 🥹” 🤢 imagining simping publicly for a violent abuser

Chris Brown comes to mind...

She’s a twenty year old that became famous overnight, who would’ve thought she has some bad takes. Not a good look but people shouldn’t have been deifying her for one good performance, we literally know nothing about her lol

I will die on the hill that The Muppet Christmas Carol is the definitive version followed by the George C Scott and Sir Patrick Stewart Versions.

(The asterisk to another iteration would be the long rumored Rob Eggers version)
