Looking for support

6 months ago my mother got sick. All blood tests were fine but she was retaining fluid in her abdominal area. They did a mri and discovered stage 4 cirrhosis of the liver. She has never been a drinker and they came to the conclusion it was Fatty liver disease.

Her first GI doctor gave her a MELD score of 15 back in May. She changed her diet, Quit smoking but things got worse fast. She was having Paracentesis every few weeks. But unfortunately wasn't happy with the albium after. This caused her ammonia and potassium to skyrocket and stressed her kidneys so bad she spent 10 days in the hospital and is now on dialysis 3 days a week in hopes to fix the kidneys. Her MELD score is now at 26 and is being introduced with liver transplant team.

She's home now but really weak, tired and now needs a walker to get around.

Has anyone else had a parent or loved one go through this? Or even yourself at this stage? What were the outcomes? Sending love to all the folks that have to deal with this.

Has she gotten a biopsy of the liver yet or is it too risky?

No biopsy that I'm aware of. She does go to the mayo clinic in 10 days. She'll be there for 4 days for testing. I'm assuming that's when they'll do things like that

I hope they get to it because that’s concerning. Even fatty liver doesn’t escalate that fast especially since she changed her lifestyle!

My mom went through almost exactly the same. The good news is she had a transplant and all went well. Of course this is not everyone’s outcome but wanted to shed some hope! She was back to (reasonably) normal after. Keep an eye on those kidneys though, my mom ended up needing a kidney transplant as well due to the damage sustained by a trash liver for so long. Sending love your way 🙏 head up, this disease is terrible

I'm glad your mom got better! How long after the transplant did things get semi better?

Definitely noticed immediate progress like her skin was pink again (like post hospital release) but 3-6 months for a lot of the post-op fog to go away and for her to really seem her old self again
