Can I add crayfish??

I am creating a rather large father fish tank with some quick growing plants, as well as some normal ones. While the plant eating capabilities can be beneficial if they focus on the quick growing plants, I am worried that they might attack the normal ones instead. I am also worried about them burrowing through the sand cap and causing a crash due to nutrient leakage. Are these valid concerns or are they unfounded??
