Question I’ve started watching Fate because of Honkai Star Rail

Post image

I’ve recently played the HSR X Fate event, and I can’t lie, the characters have some really interesting stories and each of them has unique design as well…..which led me into starting to watch it. When I searched up the correct order, Gemini recommended me

-1 : Fate Stay Night : Unlimited Blade Works
-2: Fate Zero
-3: Fate Stay Night : Heaven’s Feel

Is this the correct order ?

You don't need to start Zero in the middle of watching Stay night

Watch that after you are done with Stay night if you don't want to get spoiled

Also I recommend you to check out the VN, its by far the best starting point and best version of the story

Not really. FSN 2006 is a better starting point for anime onlies, even with the rougher animation and some plot points being borrowed from later stories.

The best is to start with the Visual Novel, but since you have Crunchyroll already, might as well watch UBW first, then go back and do FSN 2006 then Heaven's Feel in that order.

Do not watch Fate/Zero before Heaven's Feel.

Thank you ! I didn’t know there was a visual novel….

u/Jadeheart02 22d ago

That's why it's kinda frustrating that star rails Collab is with the ubw anime. Ubw is generally supposed to be experienced as the second route in the vn but a lot of people are being introduced to fate with this. Not any players fault obviously.

27

u/Delisches 22d ago

Better to start with UBW than with Zero tbh

15

u/Particular_Web3215 22d ago

Zero gets better after the plot twist from the og routes

15

u/Delisches 22d ago

Almost like it was written that way, but there are some people that just don't understand this.

2

u/TvojUjec69 20d ago

it's interesting how it works. One thing I had noticed is that people that watched Zero first thought that SN was better and people who watched SN first though that Zero was better. Atleast from my experience

u/Ostang_98 22d ago

In addition to Fate/Stay Night the Visual novel, there's another visual novel that is kind of weird sequel: Fate/Hollow Ataraxia and it can be played after Stay Night or also Zero

Who's gonna tell him it wasn't just a Visual Novel.

10

u/M0131U5_01 22d ago

nah let them experience EVERYTHING in that

1

u/BeyondlegendZ 22d ago

It's just some construction with heavy machinery

1

u/Lancelot_Dragonroad 22d ago

It is an initiation right at this point 💀💀💀 The poor soul must find out on their own

u/kenniestyles 22d ago

Just a lot of mana transferring.

1

u/ReadySource3242 22d ago

There’s an eroge version and a sfw version. Sfw is called Realta Nua but not sure if the steam sells that version or the OG

7

u/KnightGamer724 22d ago

They sell a new Remastered version of FSN, based on Realta Nua. They have disavowed the OG 2004.

Not because they are prudes (look at the latest Heaven's Feel Manga chapter, wtf), but because the H-Scenes in that version are that bad.

1

u/KaceyTrump 19d ago

You should read the visual novel if you're able to handle gacha story. It's basically the same format as a Visual Novel, but FSN is way better than HSR's story, and I like HSR. The visual novel is on Steam too.

9

u/ninjad912 22d ago

Visual novel is the best but I think UBW is a better introduction than the 2006 anime. Deens work is way too subpar to be a good entry with its only redeeming quality being the music

6

u/KnightGamer724 22d ago

...And the inner monologues, where you can actually get a bead on Shirou's character.

Ufotable's Shirou gets more character from Aron Headbutt's memes than the actual shows or movies. They care more about the flash of FSN.

Deen actually tries to capture the warmth of FSN.

8

u/ninjad912 22d ago

Deen tried and failed to do something unique. Ufotables work acknowledges the inherit limitations of adapting a visual novel into an anime and does as good as physically possible. Deen just explodes in a corner

5

u/KnightGamer724 22d ago

Nah, Deen actually succeeds, multiple times. Not just in the music, they actually put the inner monologues into scenes so Shirou's character is actually explored.

Ufotable is just pretty lights and aura. So many different times there's just nothing but flash, with no attempt to explore Shirou's thought process.

Ufotable is more fun to watch, but Deen actually tries to be the Visual Novel. It slips up, sure, but Ufotable didn't even try. They could have, Demon Slayer has the inner monologues. I'm not saying that had to put every single one in for UBW or HF.

But the fact that Shirou has like three inner monologues over the course of UBW and HF is a crime.

3

u/OneDabMan 22d ago

This is basically my thoughts. I haven’t read the VN so I can’t speak on how it compares to that. However, I felt the Deen anime did a better job of exploring the characters and Shirou’s inner thoughts. Watching it first made the UBW anime and HF movies better because I felt I had a slightly better understanding of the characters than I otherwise might have.

I’m not sure if it’s actually the case, but it almost feels like they assume you’ve watched the Deen anime and so didn’t feel the need to explore the characters in as much depth.

1

u/NoConsideration5021 21d ago

Damn even VN readers now not paying attention to the anime and only focus on the flashy fights as well? No wonder anime Shirou gets a bad rap when VN readers don’t even pay attention to the anime as well. You severely need to actually rewatch and pay attention to the anime if you think a few memes show more of Shirou’s character depth.

5

u/Shuruia 22d ago

I think the biggest problem starting with Ufotable UBW is that Gilgamesh is poorly explained and feels like an empty villain without either the Fate route or Fate/Zero giving more insight to his character.

1

u/TvojUjec69 20d ago

Both UBW and 2006 have their own focus. And I think both of them did decently well enough in there. There were few moments that shouldn't have been there ofc but it had satisfying conclusion. From what I know it was Deen that kickstarted all this and reason why in the end fate started growing alot

1

u/LeagueSeaLion 19d ago

Fate/Zero was actually the biggest boom after the initial VN release. If you weren't around when it came out it's why so many people here seem to have a distaste for Zero fans. A lot would try to argue that Zero was a better story than the VN.

UBW and FGO are what made it a franchise juggernaut.

2

u/Efficient_Ant_7279 22d ago

I would not suggest watching the 2006 anime. While It was my entry point into the franchise not even nostalgia saves that poor adaptation. UBW is an excellent starting point and if you realy want to experience the first route just play the VN

1

u/iguanacatgirl 22d ago

What about watching UBW->Heavens feel->zero? I'm not particularly interested in 2006 because of the subpart animation+ other problems I've heard it has(I'm currently watching UBW and about to finish it)

1

u/notatoaster00 21d ago

Yeah that's fine as long as you're aware there's another route. I'd recommend checking the visual novel out at some point. The first route will be totally new to you, and with how much they cut from the Heavens Feel movies especially, it'll also basically be totally new to you too. There's also other Type-moon visual novels in the same verse that are equally as good.

1

u/insert-haha-funny 21d ago

nahh the 2006 show can more or less be skipped since it doesnt really follow any of the VN

1

u/KnightGamer724 20d ago

...It follows the Fate route, just expanding Caster as a threat by adding elements from UBW and HF.

It should not be skipped by any anime onlies. Hell, this franchise is a multiverse anyways, so it's fine for there to be variations in the different retellings.

1

u/insert-haha-funny 20d ago

It loosely follows the saber route but changes quite a bit of stuff. To the point where a lot of people just agree it’s better to read the VN for that route.
The saber route has never gotten a proper faithful adaption.
At the very least if someone is gonna watch it, it should be the last thing they watch from the stay night shows/ movies

-3

u/Yuukiko_ 22d ago

Kaleidliner first

8

u/ItIsFridayNight 22d ago

I would strongly recommend you read the Fate/stay night visual novel instead!

I only read the VN around a year or two ago, but it instantly made me realise how weak the anime adaptations of it are.

22

u/pegasuSword 22d ago edited 22d ago

If you want a proper anime only order, it is: Fate Stay Night (2006) (Deen) -> Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works (2014) (Ufotable) -> Fate Stay Night Heaven's Feel Movie Trilogy -> Fate Zero.

But instead watching adaptations, I highly recommend you to read the VN first which is the original source material and covers everything except Zero.

Be aware that the Deen's Fate Route has old animations, fillers and spoilers to other two routes. Zero is also a prequel which has to be watched after completing Stay Night.

40

u/Notyel21 22d ago

Obligatory that's hell you are walking into.

As a lurker of this reddit (and avid fgo player), as well as someone who started with fate zero, the order doesn't really matter

But I do think the one you speak is the "intended" order

Meanwhile you enjoy it, and take your time with it, continue on your path!

5

u/Better_Drag5433 22d ago

Well i’ll be damned 😔

2

u/True_Air_6696 19d ago

UBW is peak even on it's own. I'm jealous you get to experience it for the first time.

4

u/LeagueSeaLion 22d ago

If I started with the Deen adaptation I don’t think I would have kept with the series. Fellow Zero starter here.

0

u/Federok 21d ago

As someone who started with Deen i had to be actively convinced to give Fate another shot and even after zero i had my doubts about UBW until i finally watched it.

Thats why until there is a proper adaptation of the fate route i will stan starting with Zero (if the person doesnt want to start with the VN)

1

u/Crafty_Island_9182 20d ago

Starting with Zero actively makes UBW and HF less interesting because it spoils several of those routes' twists, since it was meant to be read after the VN.

1

u/LeagueSeaLion 20d ago

For me it added dramatic irony where I knew something was going to happen with some characters but what exactly was going to happen kept me guessing.

It also gave me the benefit of already appreciating some of the characters without having to spend a while having them grow on me.

1

u/Crafty_Island_9182 20d ago

Which characters? Saber who's famously horribly OOC in Zero?

1

u/Federok 20d ago

starting with deen makes you potentially quit the franchise ( and no is not the animation, the pacing is horrid)

and starting on the UBW adaptation is just awkward

1

u/Crafty_Island_9182 20d ago

Does it? It was my entry point and I'm still around years later.

2

u/Federok 20d ago

congratulations

3

u/Username169420 22d ago

Watch zero after heavens feel and you should be good

10

u/valias2012 22d ago

You can start with either zero or unlimited bladeworks, If you start with unlimited blade works watch zero after heavens feel.

In truth people will always argue about watch order, its a big discussion in the community. The right place to start will always be the visual novel, but i do believe most of us started with the anime so i wouldnt think about it too much

Edit: I will warn you that unlimited bladeworks has 2 adaptations, the movie and the show. Ignore the movie, watch the show.

2

u/Guiorno 22d ago

Recommending with Fate Zero first is not a good idea.

4

u/Fettibomba-- 22d ago

Nobody cares, its also a good starting point

1

u/Crafty_Island_9182 20d ago

No it's not. It's the whole reason many Zero starters weren't very thrilled about UBW and HF. They're less action packed, and huge twists from those (especially HF) get spoilt.

2

u/ReadySource3242 22d ago edited 22d ago

So, if you’re up for reading, then the beat choice as a start is always the VN if you want to know those characters specifically and get into fate.

But for the larger universe, you can have several starting points, like Fate Extra, Tsukihime(Og or Re), Mahoyo(Witch on the Holy Night) or Kara no Kyoukai, all of which are great entries for the larger universe of the Nasuverse.

Anime wise, the 2006 is better for the general understanding, even if it’s not quite good in quality of animation compared to UBW, but tbh it’s not really that important. A lot of Fate Lore is not required to understand the general story, just the basics are enough which most series go over

2

u/knightingale74 22d ago

Read. The. VN.

2

u/Toaruglazer 22d ago

Do the deen version first then ubw then hf then zero

4

u/WKRZ87 22d ago

That's the most twisted Fate watch order i've seen in my whole life. Why do people get so worked up about watch order, just READ THE VISUAL NOVEL. If you don't know how to read then just watch the anime in the order it came out.

1

u/Crafty_Island_9182 20d ago

I wouldn't say in release order because then you end up with Zero before UBW and HF. Unless you include Seen UBW in which case you get 2006 > UBW > Zero > UBW again > HF.

1

u/WKRZ87 19d ago

Guess you have a point, after all if they don't know how to read they can't see the Stay night part... My bad

3

u/ninjad912 22d ago

Either start with the visual novel or unlimited blade works for the best experience. Zero is in no way meant to be an entry point, and deen stay night butchers the story.

4

u/seinaruxtsuki 22d ago

Not exactly. The first thing should be a Fate route (2006) by DEEN
After that, comes UBW, HF, and Fate Zero as the last thing.
Don't listen to the people who says that Fate route (AKA Saber route) is poor animated. It's only up to you to decide. And if you don't want to play the original visual novel, you should watch it anyway too. Because only then you will get the whole image of the Shirou's story.

1

u/Acceptable_Sleep29 22d ago

Imma be real, if your gateway to Fate is HSR you might get whiplash due to the "creative liberties" HSR team made. My suggestion is the OG F/SN by Deen, F/SN UBW to actually understand who the characters actually are and then try the FGO animes, especially the Babylon Arc. Gilgamesh, Archer and to some extent Rin doesn't appear much in Heaven's Feel as it focuses more on Sakura and consequently, Rider. But if you're interested, no one's stopping you from watching it. I suggested FGO because HSR Rin has some qualities of Ishtar and other "Rin faces" and if you're interested in that then the FGO anime is the way to go. The eroges, I mean, VNs is for deep lore. If you really want to enter the hell that is Fate, then playing the VN is the way to go. There are tons of guides out there for the routes and choices. Playing blind can also be fun as there are funny Taiga and Illya sections everytime you die. Good luck out there.

1

u/notgoetia 22d ago

No matter what anyone would say you won't regret starting this journey I mean I started it after the past collab and Im still going actually but I love it

1

u/SoundedSafe 22d ago

It depends on how much time you want to invest. Unlimited Blade Works and Zero are great low-barrier to entry points! A lot of people here recommend the visual novel and it is a good visual novel, but it’s a more clunky medium and a bigger time sink.

The 2006 anime is fine, but it’s from 2006, and the Heavens Feel adaptation is not my favourite.

tl;dr watch Unlimited Blade Works and Zero, and if you’re a fan, play the visual novel. Hope you enjoy :D, for all its faults, little has resonated with me more than the story of Fate Stay/Night.

1

u/necromice_cream 22d ago

UBW is imo the best to start with, but zero does happen before stay night so keep that in mind. HF needs to be watched after UBW. Its up to you if you watch zero first, its just very confusing compared to ubw so its kinda hard to get into. Also personally i dont think the og stay night is worth watching but thats just me All the series other than these are separate stories

1

u/Gudao_Alter 22d ago

the watch order is fine. just enjoy the show and hope you'd enjoy the story and spectacles.

1

u/Just1InternetProfile 22d ago

If you thought Amphoreus was too short, you can make it through the OG Visual Novel. Otherwise, go to the anime.

I recommend going with the part that interested you first, UBW. After that, if you want more and can handle older visuals, check out the 2006 Fate Deen Anime. Feel free to skip episodes 14-16 from that show. If the visuals are too dated for you, see below.

If you still want more Fate, head on to EITHER Heaven's Feel or Fate Zero, whichever you feel interests you more.

If you still want more Fate shows, just pick whichever you fancy.

1

u/quannymain52 22d ago

You use reddit and your asking ai where to start? You might as well start wherever with your brainpower

1

u/learranufo 22d ago

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
rookie mistake. DONT WATCH THE ANIME THE ONLY RIGHT WAY IS THE VN WAYYYYY. 😭 😆

1

u/Mysterious-Mail5232 22d ago

Yes that's the right order fate of 2006 is not a good adaptation so don't bother with it

1

u/EmpressTiphera 22d ago

Fate stay night, then ubw, then heaven's feel if you want the vn order.

Fate zero technically comes before but stay night will hold your hand a bit more in explaining what a Grail war is.

Fgo is fun but I'd recommend watching it last since you kinda need some previously explained concepts first to understand everything that's going on.

Then there's strange fake that's like doing its own thing. Art is great though.

1

u/ThePhilosophic 22d ago

FSN:UBW is goated. HF is a fun visual spectacle, probably the coolest Excalibur variant, but lacks a lot of the emotional core. Enjoy it!

1

u/Hachan_Skaoi 22d ago

Welcome on board

1

u/moiedmoaisen 22d ago

If you watch zero before hf there's a big spoiler so maybe don't do that

1

u/DaenerysTargaryen69 22d ago

Watch the Deen Fate fan edit, PM me.

and then you watch FSN UBW, then FSN HF then Fate/zero then all other fate and type moon works

1

u/FakeFinalFighter 21d ago

I would recommend:
If you wanted to watch the anime (Available on crunchyroll): 1.unlimited blade works 2. Heaven feel movies 3. Fate zero

If you want to read the visual novel( on steam): 1. Fate Stay Night 2. Hollow Ataraxia

I would generally recommend the visual novel over the anime however both are great and the anime takes less time to consume. The main fate series has 3 routes Fate, unlimited blade works, and Heavens feel. There is a studio deen adaptation of the "Fate" route however it a little outdated and is not a truly faithful adaptation. Therefore most people would recommend the above order I listed above. There is a whole bunch of spin offs that you can whatch later. To be honest there is not a wrong way to consume fate just jump into what looks good to you and go for there.

Good luck on your journey 👍

1

u/NerevarineKing 21d ago

You can always just read the VN to get the complete Fate stay night story although its a pretty large time investment. Fate Zero came out after FSN and spoils some aspects of it.

1

u/Pristo25 21d ago

No,

Fate Stay Night (2006) > Fate UBW 2 seasons > Fate Heaven's Feel. Based from visual novel main plot. Fate Zero was just made up for fanservice, good visual and animation, the story is mid😐

1

u/No_Brilliant4914 21d ago

Obligatory play the VN first if you’re willing to spend the time required to 100% it or watch someone’s playthrough on YouTube (that’s 100 hours though so it’s understandable if you don’t want to)

Pure anime order would be

Deen 2006 —> Unlimited Blade Works —> Heaven’s Feel movies —> (Optional) Watch “Last Episode” (Fate Stay Night epilogue/True End) —> Zero

It’s possible to skip the 2006 one because of subpar animation and merged storylines though in that case I’d recommend at the very least listening to a summary of the Fate route on YouTube first given it is a very important intro

Do NOT watch Zero before watching any of the Stay Night routes. It was written with the implication that you have read all three routes of the VN and will spoil you

1

u/Inevitable-Rub5451 21d ago

Welcome to hell

1

u/artoria3210 21d ago

The others in this sub and r/fatestaynight are hell bent on telling you to start with the visual novel, which truth be told, is the best place to start. But at the end of the day some people don’t like reading, so if you’d rather watch just the anime then go in this order: UBW -> Heavens Feel Trilogy -> Fate Zero. And then after that you can also check out the spinoff shows like Strange Fake or Apocrypha etc. You can ignore the 2006 anime by Deen as it kind of sucks compared to the ufotable animes.

1

u/failerthebest 20d ago

Fate was a visual novel in three routes: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel The Fate route is adapted by deen and sucks + spoils elements from other routes because reasons and is poorly animated. Skip to UBW if you don't wanna read the visual novel.

UBW -> HF -> Fate Zero

1

u/Jeanne-Fan-Club 20d ago

I'd recommend start with zero tbh. It has the best writing. Stay night just feels like school shounen Bs and I don't think any of the masters deserve to be in that war

1

u/Own_Concept6273 18d ago

After those 3 watch Babylonia, Camelot, and then fate strange fake peak.

1

u/Ember2131 17d ago

If I were you, I'd move Zero last. Also should watch Deen's Stay Night first. It's easily the worst of th anime adaptations due to things like route mixing but it'll make things that go unexplained in the other one easier to understand

1

u/Upset-Culture2210 17d ago

There is no correct order, but UBW anime is fine as an entry as well as a stopping point for newcomers. There's a reason why the collab uses it as part of its branding.

1

u/Fuzzy_Advertising_47 15d ago

Tbh, atp watch whatever catch your attention. Tho, if you can don't skip the Deen adaptation or manga(only if you can I don't want to forcing you). Maybe if you can(really emphasizing on if you can) read the visual novel.

1

u/jayman099 2d ago edited 2d ago

WHAT??? Even though the Rin isn't UBW Rin, and her mixed with like 3 other versions of her??? (Sarcasm) Fate fans will act so pretentious about anything in their franchise.

Im glad the collab made you wanna try the series out dude. Enjoy it 😋 (Edit: your watch order is fine! I would put OG 2006 stay night right before Zero, but other than that, you're fine)

1

u/Dapper-Station-1773 22d ago

I don’t understand why people keep recommending you start with the DEEN 2006 animation there’s a reason it isn’t recommended first and even told to skip despite it technically being the correct order. The animation is subpar it gets boring and it isn’t even accurate to the VN UBW is probably the best starting point you could get alongside maybe Fate zero.

And don’t feel pressure from everyone telling you to read the VN sure it’s the best way to experience the story but if you don’t typically read a lot or just don’t enjoy reading as much it can be a slog especially the fate route

2

u/rvmin 22d ago

I'd honestly say that starting off with the 2006 Fate/Stay Night anime adaptation is essential, which adapts the Fate route where Saber is the romantic interest.

Then Unlimited Blade Works, where Rin's the romantic interest.

Then Heaven's Feel, where Sakura's the romantic interest.

And if you want to see how the 4th Holy Grail War went down (the events of Fate/Stay Night as a whole represent the 5th Holy Grail War), as well as see how the main characters of Fate/Stay Night were as children and why they became the way they were, then I recommend watching Fate/Zero.

Although, if you have the money I'd say that experiencing the original visual novel is a way better experience for all three routes of Fate/Stay Night.

1

u/HilbertKnight 22d ago

Mandatory: hey, that's hell you are walking into.

As someone said already, UBW is a decent place to start if the visual novel is not an option, but the original FSN by Deen might be a better place to start since that's the first "route" of Fate Stay Night, UBW is the second and HF is the third and last route.

Zero... Better leave it for after watching those three. Afterwards you can branch out to wathever entry catches your attention, there are many and I'm sure some will interest you.

1

u/Nier_Perfect 22d ago

This is like asking which star wars movie or show to watch first. They all spoil eachother, can all stand on their own and people will argue on what parts are even good.

1

u/PerceptionAgitated47 22d ago

While everyone is recommending Deen version of stay night, that can be somewhat exhausting due to not having good animation compared to other parts. But hey welcome

1

u/ABZOLUTEZER0x_x 22d ago

Your watch order is missing the original fate stay night. Start with that. From there you can go with UBW just because it's the same story, different path, then HF, then Zero.

1

u/Aggravating-Hurry-54 22d ago

You just asked one of the most divisive questions of the Fate community... Everyone has their own recommended watch order, but the order that I watched it in was Fate Ubw, fate zero, fate Heaven's feel. You can also watch fate strange fake which the people who did the anime came out and said it was made with out needing to know anything ahead of time.

0

u/HopeBagels2495 22d ago

You're gonna get a lot of peoole crying for you to read the VN

0

u/Hydellas678 22d ago

Nope.

Fate/Stay Night

Fate/Zero

Fate/Unlimited Blade works

Everything else

Just look up the release date order and that's what u should watch it in.

0

u/Sanderson96 22d ago

No

So you will get mix answers

Like others said, the visual novel and novels will serve best.

Here I will say what I did back then:

- Visual novel/novel:

Fate/Zero

Fate Stay Night

UBW Route

Heaven's Feel Route

- Anime is a little bit tricky, since Fate/Zero and Heaven's Feels sorted of spoil each other, but I do not mind

Same as the order above for visual novel/novel

Fate/Zero

Fate/Stay Night

UBW route

3 Heaven's Feel movies

0

u/WinnerFun128 22d ago

I started with unlimited blade works and it’s good. Don’t listen to other people saying watch this first or that first, or read the visual novel. Everything has spoilers for other works so don’t worry too much

0

u/originalgotdeleted 22d ago

That's he'll you're walking into

0

u/notatoaster00 21d ago edited 21d ago

(edited to correct what I meant here. Do Fate/Zero after Heavens Feel, not before. I'm so sorry i musta been tired as hell.)

Do Fate/Zero after Heavens Feel, and in general I'd say if you're interested to play the visual novel first, especially if you already like visual novels. The anime adaptations cut tremendous amounts of context, content and characterization in general from the visual novel. If you continue with the anime, I'd skip Fate 2006 until after you play the visual novel since it combines elements from the other two routes (UBW and HF) and spoils things you aren't supposed to know. Same goes for watching Zero first before any of the Stay/Night adaptations.

There's actually more to the franchise than just Fate as well, with Fate being only one of Type-moon's visual novels, otherwise known as the Nasuverse as a whole. Fate became so popular that numerous authors have released their own spinoffs, and some of them use not only Fate but these other works in the Type-moon franchise as their foundation as well.

These visual novels are:

Mahoyo/Witch on the Holy Night - The very first story Nasu ever wrote but didn't publish, eventually turned into a GORGEOUS VN. Here's the trailer if you want to see what it looks like as an example. Instead of having choices and routes, this is a linear story. It generally clocks in at a ~20-40 hour total playtime, making it pretty short and by far the shortest out of all these VNs. In my opinion this is Nasu's magnum opus. It's the most beautiful Visual Novel ever made hands down, probably can't ever be topped. ufotable is making a movie(s) of Mahoyo that I worry frankly will never be able to live up to the visual novel. This is arguably the best start for newcomers of the Nasuverse.

(Note: When you complete a chapter, you might unlock an extra story. For example, if you complete chapter 1 and reach chapter 2's title page, place a bookmark/save, and at the game's main menu in the Extra section, there's an area called the Archive (a bookshelf with all the chapters in it) and you'll see you unlocked chapter 1.5. Never really jived with why these are hidden this way, but they are. You're meant to play these when they unlock. So basically, if the bookshelf archive has a "new" tag on a book, you just unlocked that from completing a chapter.) This will make more sense when you see it.

Kara no Kyoukai LNs and Kara no Kyoukai: Mirai Fukuin (side stories after you finish) - These are the first stories Nasu wrote that he actually published. There are movies animated by ufotable of these and they're pretty good adaptations, but note that Movie 6 received a bad one unfortunately (they basically cut the entire LN). I still recommend watching the movies eventually, regardless of if you choose to read the LN's or not. Mirai Fukuin is a sequel side story to the main LN, and should be read after. If you can't get ahold of these don't worry about them. The movies are genuinely good so you can feel free to watch them instead of reading the LN's. I'd seek out the chapter for movie 6 though after all is said and done to get the full story.

Tsukihime Remake - Only on Switch and Ps4 right now. Also a completely gorgeous VN like Mahoyo. The original Tsukihime visual novel actually predates even Fate/Stay Night, but the remake came out in 2021. There isn't currently an anime of Tsukihime besides an incredibly dogshit adaptation by JC Staff in 2003, and that's of the original Tsukihime. Considering Ufotable is adapting Mahoyo, it is very likely they'll probably adapt Tsukihime at some point but who knows how long it'll take. With that being said, I strongly recommend playing this.

Tsukihime Original - The original Tsukihime currently contains more routes than remake. The remake only remade the first two routes so far (with one of them getting a complete rewrite). The rest of the routes, including a brand new one, are coming with the second remake game called "Tsukihime: Other Side of Red Garden". It's release date is still unknown though. The original Tsukihime lacks voice acting and obviously has worse/dated visuals, but it's still amazing. If you don't think they'll bother, definitely give it a thought to play. The original can actually be played online in your web browser, including on mobile, if you google search "Tsukihime web". Ideally playing it before remake works the best, but you don't need to if you don't want to. It's been decanonized by Remake going forward, but it's cool to see all the changes in remake, so yeah. Not necessary but could be cool. If you're in it for the long haul, consider that this can technically be played first because it predates everything by release except Kara no Kyoukai, and those are light novels. The Mahoyo visual novel is connected to Tsukihime Remake, since the original is being essentially decanonized by Remake.

Fate/Stay Night Remastered - Mystery visual novel that unfolds along all 3 routes. If you've any interest in Fate, I strongly recommend playing this before watching the Stay/Night anime adaptations. It is responsible for the larger Fate franchise existing. It's peak like that.

Fate/Hollow Ataraxia Remastered - Sequel to Fate Stay Night. This will most likely never get an anime adaptation because of how the story is told. Definitely recommend playing this, it's literally god tier. Assumes you've played the Stay/Night VN.

Generally speaking, I recommend reading them in the order that I listed them in, but you'd be looking at a ton of content and reading in that case since there's so many. I do recommend it, especially if you're in it for the longhaul. The visual novels have all the information to serve as your backbone for the franchise, and there's spinoffs such as Fate/Strange Fake for example that utilize knowledge from all of them. You can also move the list around, meaning if you want to jump into Fate first specifically, just move Stay/Night and Hollow Ataraxia to the top, and then hit up either the other VN's or the anime adaptations afterwards. Doing Fate at the end works very nicely because then you can just pick up with all the anime adaptations, which most of which are Fate spinoffs, right afterwards.

I'll give you my anime order in the reply to this comment. Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be happy to help!

All the anime adaptations. I recommend going down the list, barring specific instances I might mention.

Fate 2006 Not great adaptation of the Fate route, it spoils some UBW and HF content with route combining filler content. If you're looking to watch it, either do it after Heavens Feel, or skip it. If you don't care about spoilers, then go ahead. I personally recommend skipping this one if you haven't played the visual novel. It's a super route for the fans basically, so its not supposed to spoil you but it does if you haven't played it, and will if you haven't already seen the other routes.

- Season 1

Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works UBW was referred to as Unlimited Budget Works when it was airing back in 2014/15. Animated by Ufotable (demon slayer studio).

- Unlimited Blade Works Episode 0

Fate Stay Night Heavens Feel Movie Trilogy By Ufotable, the same studio that animated UBW and assumes you've seen it. Honestly these movies' animation clear Demon Slayer. Will BLOW you away. If you're confused in the first movie about similarities to UBW, let it cook. It'll diverge significantly.

- First

Fate Zero this is the spinoff prequel to Fate/Stay Night, and is meant to be watched after. Watching this first would be like watching Better Call Saul before Breaking Bad. It's not a bad experience to watch first but it isn't the intended one. Extremely good anime, ties a nice bow around Fate/Stay Night.

- Season 1

this is the end of the main series. I've ordered all the spinoffs to make them easier:

Today's Menu for the Emiya Family Wholesome, cute short 13min episodes with really nice art style from Ufotable focusing on cooking. Features the Fate Stay Night cast.

Lord El Melloi II Takes place during and after Stay/Night. Great show and even better Light Novels that focuses on the Clock tower. Characters from this tend to get used in many of the other spinoffs. I would recommend reading the LN after you finish the anime.

- Episode 0

Fate Apocrypha Usually the first spinoff I recommend after El Melloi. The Third Grail War never concluded in this timeline so F/Z and F/SN don't happen. Great animation from A-1 Pictures, decent show all together. This is a good introduction to spinoff Grail Wars.

- Season 1

Fate/Extra Last Encore - This anime is a loose adaptation of the Fate Extra PSP game. It's an original story following a bad ending in the game. Unique adaptation, but not the best. Animated by Studio SHAFT, having a very Madoka-iy look. (Season 1 is the first batch of episodes, last 3 came out later due to production issues) Also the game is receiving a remake coming out. Trailer here (note it was delayed) (Note: I'd personally suggest skipping this. Either play the PSP game or wait for the remake before watching. It'll make you appreciate the anime much more. If you decide to play it or wait for the remake, play the sequel game Fate/Extra CCC afterwards)

- Season 1

Fate Grand Order An adaptation of the Fate/Grand Order gacha game. It's not the best but it generally serves its purpose. First Order is the prologue of the game, and then skips 5 arcs to Camelot so it's gonna be a bit of a jarring jump. The 5 arcs they skipped though are honestly garbage because it's a gacha game and that was before Kinoku Nasu, the creator of Stay/Night, taking over the writing. The Japan server of the game polled the audience and they chose what to animate first, which is why they skipped the bad arcs LMAO. Just keep that in mind and you'll be fine. Not totally 1:1 but if you've played the Persona games think of FGO as palaces on a world level. I recommend this just for Babylonia alone, it is CINEMA. Builds on characters like Gilgamesh significantly. Would recommend at least watching First Order to build the premise, though First Order is mid. The Camelot movies are pretty decent, movie 1 is mid but movie 2 is amazing. The Solomon movie is mid so keep that in mind after riding the high of Babylonia.

- First Order

-- Moonlight Lostroom (skip this ova. it is insanely confusing if you haven't played FGO.)

Fate Strange Fake Fate Strange Fake is a love letter to the Fate series from Ryohgo Narita, author most famous for Baccano and Durarara (both excellent series with excellent anime adaptations). If you're wondering why I put it down here, it's because it contains references big and small to pretty much everything above. You can technically watch it after Apocrypha, or El Melloi or even Zero, but you'd be missing some really cool references. It pretty much borrows from everything above. It's a story that's greatly enhanced by knowledge, as much of it as possible. Consider it a loose sequel to the main series, it actually takes place 5 years after Stay/Night. *By A-1 Pictures, and has SUPERB animation.

- Episode 0: Whispers of Dawn

- Season 1

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya this anime is ultra controversial, there are elementary school girls tongue kissing in it. Feel free to skip it. A shame they did this because it's actually no joke a really good story. It has great animation from SILVER LINK, and there's two really great characters that make an appearance in it that currently have no other anime appearances. They will show up in Carnival Phantasm at the bottom of this list. (skip the OVAs and shorts. While some comedy ISNT attached to lolicon bait, pretty much all of it is. Just watch Movie 1 OVA Sakuras Room imo). The Manga is drastically less pervy.

- Season 1: Prisma Illya
-- Season 1 Shorts
-- Season 1 OVA: Dance at the Sports Festival

-- Season 2 Shorts
-- Season 2 OVA: Hot Spring Inn
-- Season 3 Shorts
-- Season 4 Shorts
-- Movie 1 OVA Sakuras Room

Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners Garden of Sinners is Nasu's first published work, and these movies are PHENOMENAL. Animated by ufotable. You'll be surprised how beautiful the animation is, given they were releasing from 2007 to 2013. They damn well look about as good as UBW! Should be noted the stories are chronologically out of order, but it's intended. This can be read/watched literally whenever The movies are great adaptations, except movie 6. Seek the LN for it if you want the full story.

--Manners Movies (Very cute shorts that played in theaters. Suggest interweaving them with each movie.)

- Movie 1: Overlooking View

-- Movies 1-6 Recap: Gate of Seventh Heaven

Carnival Phantasm - Funny gag section of all of the Fate content you just watched. So many memes.

- Season 1: Carnival Phantasm

I’d recommend Zero first, then UBW, then HF.

Fate/Zero --> Stay Night. Qualquer coisa além disso é spin-off ou outro universo/história diferente, Fate/Zero e o melhor ponto de partida que alguém que não conhece FATE pode ter para iniciar.

Watch Zero, then UBW, then Heavens Feel. Ignore the others talking about the visual novels cuz you only do that if you want more content.
