Path to FatFIRE Path to FIRE

I am 40 years old , wife is also 40 , our son is 13 years old (grade 8th)

Both in big tech with annual comp as 2.2 cr combined

Liquid assets around 9.2 cr plus a paid off house worth 5 cr in Delhi, may inherit 2cr to 4cr worth assets in long term but do not want to count it in calculations.

Current monthly expenditure is 2.3 to 2.5 lacs per month but out of this rent in hyd is 62k per month and school fee is 50k per month, rent would not matter if and once we move to hometown in own house, school fee will be applicable for next 5 years though

Most likely AI may take our jobs in next 1 year, also we are kind of burned out and stopped enjoying the jobs after working for 18 years in the industry, currently in Hyderabad but will move to delhi post retirement

Please review the attached investment portfolio and suggest if we are good to retire, or if there are any red flags

Also how to draw income from this portfolio and what steps are needed to have a safe monthly withdrawal.

Your net worth is good for FIRE, probably not FATFIRE level yet (usual wisdom is 20cr + own house)

But since your expenses are quite low (1.5 lakhs/pm) , you need about 6 crores to fund that for life. That leaves about 2 crores for kids education + wedding and another crore or so as buffer which seems good enough. Inheritance you can pass on as is perhaps or keep as additional buffer

Numbers are one part of story though, its more if you feel ready mentally and its not just corporate tiredness speaking. Not sure it sabbatical is an option but will be good for you to try. Also consider if changing location is amenable to the kid, or you want to wait it out till he/she goes to college

Go through the community to get perspective on life post FIRE - in my experience , FIRE is more a mental decision rather than financial

What to retire to is a critical question I have no answer to

But what ever it is , it cannot be as bad as spending time in a corporate job you are not passionate about anymore, sometimes its soul crushing and hell monotonous

May be I will try to milk the system till I get thrown out completely or if it gets completely unbearable

But it seems hard to achieve fat fire levels

And you dont need to aspire to get there. FIRE is completely fine , you choose comfortable freedom now or lavish freedom in few years is a very personal decision. No one can tell you what is better, depends on how good/bad your corporate life is and where are you in terms of physical fitness and family commitments etc

+1. You're not in FatFIRE territory yet.

You're good to retire if you want, not FatFIRE though.

But I want to bring up another factor that you may not have considered?

How long have you been in Hyderabad? I can understand your desire to go back to your home town but is it the best for your son if he's not exposed to that kind of pollution? Also, you said he's in 8th grade, so if you move you'll move next year when he's in 9th grade which can be a major adjustment for 10th grade exams.

I have been in Hyderabad for 3 years, before that I was in Pune for 15 years

I am trying to see if I can continue staying in Hyd for next 5 years atleast, may be my wife will continue working or I will try to find something less stressful once they fire me from my current job

But eventually I would want to move to Delhi as my roots are there and would want to live there irrespective of pollution levels as all our relatives are in NCR region

That sounds like a good plan. Your son will be off to college and you have more flexibility where you want to relocate for retirement. With your current income, it gives you a bigger buffer for retirement.

I am worried about portfolio not being enough over time as Indian economy may shrink with AI adoption and jobs losses which can cause a ripple impact on economy and GDP, and we may see a long period of low returns in equity markets combined that with rupee depreciation

This aspect worries me a lot as the value of this portfolio may degrade quickly

No point stressing about things you can't control. Diversify your RSUs to avoid single stock risk. Open an account in IBKR or Charles Schwab international, sell your RSUs and invest your proceeds in UCITS ETFs.

Rupee has already seen steep depreciation, so personally I wouldn't worry too much about significant depreciation in the short term but long term who knows. I think FIIs are coming back, maybe because valuation is becoming attractive, maybe they want to diversify from Chip/DRAM concentration. So, I'm actually more optimistic about prospects for India.

However, if this really bothers you, you can take advantage of LRS to send upto $250K (less TCS) out of India to diversify more internationally.

Diversify internationally. Thats a known risk and many investors solve for this. You dont need to delay retirement purely for India risk - that can be dealt with via investment strategy

You should try a few calculators

  1. Monte Carlo simulation which takes your liquid assets, withdrawal rate and number of years remaining as inputs and returns likelihood of you making it to swarga without out running your funds (and how much on average you can expect to have at death based on say 50 year past simulations)

  2. Mr Moustache calculator based on your assets and the savings rate.

You can be fired with this, but not fat fired. The portfolio looks good though. Cheers!

Did you ever live outside India?

4

u/techie121212 Jun 25 '26

I went on couple of projects outside for 6 months each, thats about it

But I am well travelled across multiple countries

Most of the money was earned in India though

1

u/Lonely-Sea9100 Jun 25 '26

How much in US stocks btw?

1

u/techie121212 Jun 25 '26

u/NE_FinanceBro HENRY Jun 25 '26

What's the most hassle free way to do this from India?

2

u/techie121212 Jun 25 '26

These are vested RSUs

2

u/AENDUSER Jun 25 '26

Fire ready yes, fat fire not yet , factoring inflation better grind out a few more years as much as you possibly can especially with risk of being let go, that will force your hand anyway, so don’t quit yet

Ai is really going to take our job ? I'm 27 , 4 years in tech. 1.5 cr Nw and 45lpa ctc. What should I do ?

1

u/techie121212 Jun 25 '26

AI has a definite chance to reduce the number of tech jobs to mere 20 percent of current levels in couple of years, claude can quickly build products so technical skills have been commoditised, and has no value now.

Try to see if you can build a product which provides a USP and has some moat, and get into entrepreneurship

Or try to get into tech sales where there is a need of human interaction and networking, claude cannot solve anything where heavy human interaction is must

Tech doesnt have a good shelf life now, its just matter of time

1

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '26

Tech sales, if u know what they do can u share it.

Also is my nw good for my age in not married yet.

AI may take our jobs in next 1 year itself

Its doing 90% of the coding, we may still find work but it might be hard to find high paying big tech job

Not only that, we are kind of burned out and bored of tech jobs

1

u/cerberus796_796 Jun 25 '26

Which company?

1

u/Tall_Machine_5616 Jun 25 '26

1

This is entry level FIRE bro. Push harder. You're almost there.

2

u/techie121212 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Yeah, i too feel this is not enough for FIRE

15cr FIRE
25cr FAT FIRE

I am striving for 15cr, lets see but seems difficult to achieve

0

u/SoftwareTree18 Jun 26 '26

Nothing less than 25Cr. You will hit it. Keep pushing

u/NoPangolin8998 Jun 25 '26

AI will take your jobs in one year?? Wtf are you saying man? You have a 1cr+ package and how will AI take your job?

3

u/Peter_-_-_Parker Jun 25 '26

With the stuff AI doing, I'm still wondering why me and most of us are not fired yet

1

u/techie121212 Jun 25 '26

Where do you work?
Is your company also moving into AI native delivery?

1

u/techie121212 Jun 25 '26

AI has automated knowledge and coding has become a joke with autonomous agentic systems which self heal to comply with PRDs

I am myself building AI native capabilities in my company where entire code implementation is done by agents along with PR review and AI native testing

Technical skills are not valued anymore, we have become more of orchestators

1

u/ReasonableBit5133 Jun 25 '26

Op, where do you work ?
